Thailand Honeymoon Guide

Everything else about the trip is easy to change, but the island sets its character. Decide with two questions: what season are you travelling, and do you want your world small and secluded or full of things to do?

Honeymoons follow wedding calendars, so plan by coast rather than postponing. November to April, both coasts are dry and calm. That's the classic window, with December–January the expensive peak (book luxury villas three to six months ahead) and February–March the sweet spot of peak weather without peak pricing. May to October, the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta) takes its monsoon: still 40–50% cheaper and often lovely, but boat days cancel in rough spells. The Gulf runs on the opposite clock. Koh Samui is sunny through the northern summer, which makes it the automatic choice for June-to-September weddings, and it takes its own rain in October–December.

One more calendar note: if the honeymoon includes Phi Phi's Maya Bay, it closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, and the Similan Islands, Thailand's best snorkelling, open only mid-October to mid-May.

The private beach dinner is the one to arrange before you fly: a table on the sand, candles, a dedicated server, usually ฿3,500–8,000 at resort level. Email the resort directly, because the good spots and the good nights go first. The private longtail charter is the opposite. Book it on the ground, the day before, through the concierge or at the pier, ฿3,000–5,000 for a full day in Krabi or ฿3,500–6,000 around Samui's southern islands. It buys the thing group tours can't sell, an empty cove with nobody's schedule but yours.

Thailand's spa culture is the honeymoon's connective tissue. A ฿400 hour of Thai massage in a good local shop is its own pleasure, but book at least one destination afternoon: Tamarind Springs in Samui's jungle, a flower bath ritual at any of the five-star spas, or a half-day couples' package (steam, scrub, oil massage, usually ฿4,000–8,000 for two). Add one shared class. Thai cooking schools run couples through markets and curry pastes in an afternoon (฿1,000–1,500 each) and send you home with a skill instead of a souvenir. Divers should look at a private two-tank charter, and if you're certifying, I'd do it on Koh Tao, the Gulf's diving island, where learning together costs less than anywhere else on earth.

Thailand's private-pool-villa tier is the single best honeymoon value in world travel. ฿8,000–15,000 a night buys what the Maldives sells for three times that, and the ฿20,000+ tier competes with anywhere on earth. Book the villa category, not the base room: the pool-and-daybed privacy is the honeymoon. (Searching for overwater bungalows? Compare each resort's honeymoon package against à-la-carte pricing, because the bundles (upgrade, private dinner, spa credit, transfers) usually win at the five-star level. But book flights and inter-island hops yourself on the local airlines, where Western tour operators add margin for nothing.

And say the word honeymoon everywhere: in the booking notes, in a pre-arrival email, at check-in. Thai hospitality culture genuinely delights in an occasion, and the difference between mentioning it and not is often a floor, a view, a bottle and a flower-strewn bed. The cost of asking is zero.
