Things to Do in Krabi
Limestone cliffs, emerald water, and the world's most beautiful beach walks
Krabi: Where Limestone Meets the Sea
Krabi Province is home to some of Thailand's most dramatic scenery — vertical limestone karsts rising hundreds of metres from turquoise water, hidden beaches accessible only by longtail boat, and a cave system that snakes beneath the jungle. The gateway town of Ao Nang is laid-back and well-serviced, while Railay Beach (reachable only by boat) consistently ranks among the world's most beautiful beaches. Whether you're here to climb, kayak, snorkel, or simply stare at the view, Krabi delivers.
Best Time to Visit Krabi
Krabi sits on the Andaman coast, so the best weather runs from November to April — dry skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for island hopping, rock climbing, and snorkelling. Peak season is December to February, when hotel prices are highest and Railay fills up by mid-morning.
The southwest monsoon (May–October) brings afternoon rain and rougher seas. Longtail boats to Railay still run, but day trips to the Phi Phi Islands and Four Islands may be cancelled in heavy weather. The upside: hotel rates drop 30–50%, Ao Nang is far less crowded, and the jungle interior is lush and green.
The shoulder months of April and late October/early November are the sweet spot — improving weather, manageable prices, and fewer crowds. April is the hottest month (35°C+), so pack sunscreen and hydrate aggressively.
Best Beaches in Krabi
Railay Beach is Krabi's crown jewel — a crescent of white sand framed by 100-metre limestone cliffs, accessible only by longtail boat. Railay West is the swimming beach with the views; Railay East has the bars and budget accommodation. The path between them takes five minutes through jungle.
Phra Nang Beach, at the tip of the Railay peninsula, is arguably Thailand's most beautiful beach — a narrow strip of sand beneath a massive overhanging cliff with a shrine cave. It's reached by a 10-minute walk from Railay East. Arrive before 10am to beat the day-trippers.
Tonsai Beach is the backpacker and climber hub — rougher around the edges than Railay, with reggae bars and cheap bungalows tucked into the cliffs. Ao Nang is the main tourist beach with the best restaurant and hotel selection, though the beach itself is average. Tubkaek Beach, 20 minutes north of Ao Nang, is quiet, scenic, and home to several luxury resorts.

Island Day Trips from Krabi
The Four Islands tour is Krabi's most popular day trip — a longtail boat circuit visiting Koh Tup, Koh Mor, Koh Poda, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. At low tide, a sand bar connects the first two islands for a surreal walk across the sea. Tours cost ฿800–1,500 depending on boat type and depart from Ao Nang.
Koh Phi Phi is 90 minutes by speedboat and worth the trip despite the crowds. Maya Bay (reopened with a daily visitor cap) is stunning. Book an early-morning tour to arrive before the masses. Phi Phi Don has good snorkelling at Loh Samah Bay and Viking Cave.
For something quieter, the Hong Islands (Koh Hong) are a hidden archipelago with an enclosed emerald lagoon you can kayak into. Day trips cost ฿1,200–1,800 and see a fraction of the visitors that Phi Phi gets. The Similan Islands are a longer trip (3–4 hours from Khao Lak) but offer Thailand's best diving and snorkelling — open mid-October to mid-May only.
