Maenam Beach

4.4(671 reviews)

Come here if you want a long, slow beach day rather than a scene. This is the north coast, several kilometres of sand backed by palms and low-key bungalows, and it's noticeably calmer than the southern and eastern shores. The water is flat enough for easy swimming, and Koh Pha Ngan sits right across the channel, close enough to pick out on a clear day. There are jet skis at certain points if you want the noise, but most people are here to walk, swim and eat something under a tree.

The honest bit: cleanliness varies. Some stretches are lovely, others collect debris near the waterline, and at least one reviewer walked away disgusted and went to Lipa Noi instead. Given how long the beach is, that's fixable. Turn up early, walk a few hundred metres in either direction, and settle where the sand looks right to you rather than parking at the first access path you find.

A handful of casual restaurants and bars sit just off the sand, so food and a cold drink are never far. Don't expect a polished resort strip. That's the appeal.

Best vacations EVER last winter on Maenam Beach, Koh Samui .. nicest beach dogs, great food, chilled atmosphere .. I `ll be back

Beautiful beach. The water is so calm, perfect for swimming and jet skiing. And you can see Ko Pha Ngan Island right opposite( Tte full moon festival's island).

Disgusting beach. Truly disappointed, garbage everywhere, on the beach, in the water... Ew! Sand wasn't soft at all either. Thankfully, we found a beautiful beach further, Lipa Noi!! A jem 🥰

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Check Monsoon Windows

Andaman coast beaches (Phuket, Krabi) have rough seas May–October. Gulf beaches (Samui, Hua Hin) are roughest October–December. Plan your beach trip around these windows for calm water and safe swimming.

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. Sunrise walks on Kata, Chaweng, or Railay are magical — and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
