Khao Soi Khun Yai

4.6(2,931 reviews)

Lunch here is a race. The kitchen is a garden shack near Wat Kuan Kama, just in from the old-city moat, and the khao soi runs out most days well before closing time. If you turn up at half one hoping for a leisurely bowl, you may be looking at empty pots and a shrug.

The menu is short, which I take as a good sign. Khao soi with chicken, beef or pork, a few satays, Thai tea. That's it. The coconut curry broth is rich but doesn't swamp the noodles, and the crispy noodle nest on top is fried properly rather than sitting there going soft. Prices are street-stall level for something that beats bowls costing several times as much in air-conditioned dining rooms.

Don't come expecting comfort. You share benches with strangers, you eat, you go. That's the deal, and it's the right deal.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
