Getting there and around
- Samui Airport is 10 to 15 minutes from Chaweng by car, the shortest transfer on the island.
- Bangrak, the pier for the Lomprayah, Seatran and Songserm boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is about 15 minutes north, roughly ฿250–350 by Grab.
- Any lane off the beach road leads onto the sand. There is no entrance, gate or fee.
- Chaweng Noi, the quieter cove at the south end, is past the rocky point at the bottom of the main beach.

Why go, and how to do it well
Chaweng is Koh Samui's main beach, about 7 km of fine white sand along the east coast and 10 to 15 minutes from the airport. It's the busiest stretch on the island and the one most of the hotels are on, from hostels to five-star resorts, with the beach road behind it packed with restaurants, shops and bars. If you want to walk from your room to the sand and from the sand to dinner, this is where I'd stay.
It works as three beaches. The north end is the quietest, and the place to stay if you want Chaweng's restaurants within reach but not its noise. The middle, around ARKbar, is the busy part, with beach clubs, water sports and fire shows, and the streets behind it around Soi Green Mango carry the clubs and bars until late. At the south end, past a rocky point, the sand carries on into Chaweng Noi, a separate cove where the noise drops away.
The swimming is the best of Samui's busy beaches. The sand shelves gently with no large stones or seaweed, and the water stays shallow for a good way out. Sunbeds, kayaks, jet skis and banana boats rent along the front, and a small reef offshore has a few fish for a casual snorkel. The catch is the northeast monsoon. From October into December big waves and strong currents build, red flags go up, and those flags are not a suggestion.
Where you sleep follows the same three parts. Toward the quieter north end, Baan Haad Ngam sits directly on the sand, about five minutes by motorbike from the busy stretch. Around ARKbar, Marasca, Muang Samui and Socialtel are all on the beach with the bars a short walk away, and Buri Rasa is an adults-only resort on that same busy stretch with the walking street behind it. For the south, Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection resort, sits on Chaweng Noi. Rates on Chaweng swing hard between high and low season, so I'd compare a few dates before settling on an end.

Go Early for Empty Sand
Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.

Is Chaweng or Lamai better?
Chaweng is bigger, busier and closer to the airport, with the island's main nightlife and the most hotels. Lamai, the next big bay south, is a slower version of the same thing, cheaper on average and with less going on after dark.

The cheapest meals are at Chaweng Night Market Food Center, an open-air hall of cook-to-order stalls open daily from 11 am to midnight, and at Chaweng Night Market beside Central Samui, which runs Thursday to Saturday from 4 to 10 pm. Central Samui also has a Tops food hall and air-conditioned restaurants. The sit-down Thai and seafood places line Chaweng Beach Road and its sois through the middle of the beach, so dinner is a walk from most hotels.
Which months should I avoid for Chaweng Beach?
October to December, when the northeast monsoon brings Samui's heaviest rain (about 445 mm in November) and big waves and currents on the east coast. February to April are the driest months, and July to September is a good second window, with about 100–120 mm of rain a month, close to January's.
