Phuket vs Koh Samui: which is better for your trip?

Pick Phuket if…
- You're traveling November to April, the Andaman's dry season
- You want the widest choice: 36 beaches, Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi day trips, the Similans
- Direct international flights matter, or you want Bangla Road after dark
Pick Koh Samui if…
- You're traveling June to September, when the Gulf is dry and the Andaman is not
- You want a resort-and-spa week with a lush interior and a quieter feel
- Koh Phangan or Koh Tao are on the plan; both are a ferry away
Why I'd choose that way
Thailand's two big resort islands sit on opposite coasts with opposite monsoons, and that decides more trips than any other factor. Phuket's rough-sea months are June to September; Samui's wet season is October to December. Book the wrong island for the season and you'll spend the holiday watching rain.
Season aside, Phuket is bigger in every sense: more beaches, more hotels, a Sino-Portuguese Old Town, Bangla Road, and the best boat-trip menu in the country (Phang Nga Bay's karst and sea caves, Phi Phi, the Similans in season). It's polished and unapologetically touristy on the west coast, and direct flights land from all over Asia.
Samui is smaller, greener and easier to relax into: a 25 km ring road past coconut groves, Chaweng for the buzz, Bophut's Fisherman's Village for boutique hotels and waterfront dinners, Na Muang waterfalls in the jungle interior, and Ang Thong Marine Park for the boat day. It costs a little more per day, partly because Bangkok Airways has the airport to itself.

Which is better in July and August?
Koh Samui. July and August are the Gulf coast's sunniest weeks, while Phuket is in its rough-sea months with red flags on the west-coast beaches.
Is Phuket or Koh Samui more expensive?
Samui, slightly: about ฿1,600 a day on a budget against Phuket's ฿1,500, and ฿4,500 against ฿4,000 mid-range. Flights are the bigger gap, since Samui's airport is a Bangkok Airways monopoly and Phuket has far more airlines competing.
Which has better beaches?
Phuket has more of them and more variety, from Patong's crowds to boat-access Freedom Beach. Samui's Chaweng and Lamai are long and lively; the north coast (Maenam, Bophut) is calmer. For the clearest water on either island, the best of it is a boat trip away.
Is Phuket good for families?
Yes, if you pick the beach: Kata, Karon and Bang Tao rather than Patong. Samui's Choeng Mon and Bophut play the same role. Both islands have large family resorts.
