Hin Ta Hin Yai

4.2(10,602 reviews)

Perched on the southern end of Lamai Beach, Hin Ta Hin Yai — meaning Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks — are a pair of naturally sculpted coastal rock formations that have become one of Koh Samui's most recognisable landmarks. The rocks are celebrated for their unmistakable resemblance to male and female genitalia, a geological curiosity that draws curious visitors and makes for memorable, light-hearted photo opportunities. Beyond the novelty, the surrounding coastal scenery is genuinely attractive, with rugged shoreline, crashing waves, and open sea views that reward those who take a moment to look past the crowds. The site is compact and easy to explore on foot, with visitors free to wander around the formations, find their angles, and take in the natural setting at their own pace. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, though the area can become busy during peak hours. Sunset is a particularly appealing time to visit, when the sky shifts colour above the water and the sound of the waves adds to the experience. November and the wetter months bring higher waves, which some visitors find adds drama to the scenery. Entry is free, making this a low-commitment addition to any Koh Samui itinerary. Taxis drop off directly at the site, and for those arriving by car, parking is available for 30 baht. The site is open daily from approximately 8:30am, with slightly extended hours on Saturdays. A brief stop of 20 to 30 minutes is generally sufficient to see the rocks and explore the immediate area.

Visitor Reviews

⭐️ Hin Ta Hin Yai (Grandfather & Grandmother Rocks) We arrived by taxi — entrance is free and it’s easy to walk around and explore the rocks. You can climb carefully, take amazing photos, and even jump into the water for a quick swim! There’s a small local market nearby with food, drinks, and souvenirs. The area is clean, peaceful, and well-maintained. Don’t miss the coconut ice cream served inside a fresh coconut with a red flower on top — it’s a must! 🍦🥥🌺 #KohSamui #Thailand #HinTaHinYai #IslandVibes #TropicalParadise

The place is beautiful, especially at sunset, when the sky fills with vibrant colors and the sound of the sea waves enhances the experience.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
