If the elephant place you're eyeing lets you ride or bathe them, book this instead. The sanctuary in the Mae Taeng valley takes in elephants pulled out of logging camps, street begging and tourist shows, and the whole model here is hands-off. You walk with a guide, you hear each animal's story, you watch them move through jungle and river on their own terms. Some tours include feeding fruit and walking alongside, others are pure observation. Either way, nobody climbs on anything.
Reviewers who arrive expecting a bathing session sometimes leave disappointed, and that's worth knowing before you pay. It's also busy. Groups of around twenty move through, and on a full day there are a lot of people on site. A few visitors have wondered whether the land can comfortably hold the number of elephants living there. Worth weighing up yourself. There are rescued dogs and cats too, dozens of them, which is either a bonus or a slight distraction depending on your temperament.

Visiting Elephant Nature Park was one of the most meaningful experiences of our entire trip to Thailand. If you care about animal welfare, this is the place to go. They do not allow elephant riding or forced interaction, which was extremely important to us. The focus here is on rescue, rehabilitation, and allowing the elephants to live as naturally as possible. You observe them on their terms, and that’s exactly how it should be. The setting is absolutely beautiful — lush countryside north of Chiang Mai with mountains, open land, and a river running through the sanctuary. Just being there feels peaceful. Watching the elephants roam, socialize, bathe, and simply be elephants in a safe environment was unforgettable. What makes the visit especially powerful is learning the individual stories of the elephants — many rescued from logging, riding camps, or other harsh conditions. The staff and volunteers are deeply knowledgeable and clearly committed to ethical care. You leave not just with great memories, but with a deeper understanding of why responsible tourism matters. This is not a flashy entertainment experience — and that’s the point. It’s thoughtful, respectful, and focused on the well-being of these incredible animals. Our visit included a delicious vegetarian lunch. It was a great ending to a perfect half-day visit. We would recommend Elephant Nature Park to anyone visiting northern Thailand who wants an ethical, educational, and genuinely moving experience.
An unforgettable and truly meaningful experience. The elephant nature park is a genuine sanctuary for elephants that have been rescued from abuse elsewhere in Thailand, particularly from tourist attractions that exploit them. The focus on the elephants’ wellbeing is clear, we kept a respectful distance while still being able to interact and observe them in a natural, ethical way. It was incredibly moving to see how well they are cared for. Joe, our tour guide, was fantastic and very knowledgeable, sharing so much information about the elephants and their stories throughout the morning. The food buffet was also amazing, with a great variety and really delicious options, which was a lovely surprise. This was one of the most special experiences of our trip, and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting an ethical elephant encounter.
What an amazing place! Totally ethical in their care for the animals, very well organised for the visitors , and situated in beautiful surroundings. We did an overnight stay and were so pleased we did. We were fed well, the room was lovely, and everything made clear. The animals are so well cared for, including all the dogs and cats they have (they have a section for disabled dogs too) and they really love all of the elephants, who all have their own story and have all suffered some form of abuse from humans. NEVER Ride an elephant people, NEVER. A fabulous place, highly recommend.
