Best Beaches in Thailand
Crystal waters, white sand, and limestone cliffs — coast by coast
Thailand's Two Coastlines
Thailand is blessed with two distinct coastlines and hundreds of islands. The Andaman Sea on the west offers dramatic limestone karsts, crystal-clear water, and world-class diving. The Gulf of Thailand on the east has calmer seas, coconut-palm-lined bays, and a different monsoon schedule — meaning you can always find a sunny beach somewhere in Thailand, any month of the year. This guide covers the best beaches on both coasts, the top islands, hidden gems, day-trip beaches from Bangkok, and when to visit each region.
Best Beaches on the Andaman Coast
Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta & the Similan Islands
The Andaman coast is Thailand's postcard shoreline — turquoise water, towering limestone cliffs, and some of the best snorkelling and diving in Southeast Asia. The season runs November to April, when the sea is calm and visibility reaches 30+ metres.
Phuket's west coast has a beach for every mood. Freedom Beach is a hidden crescent of powder-white sand accessed by longtail boat from Patong — worth the effort. Surin Beach is upscale and uncrowded. Nai Harn in the south draws locals and in-the-know visitors with its relaxed vibe and excellent swimming. Kata Noi is a compact beauty ideal for families.
Krabi province delivers Thailand's most dramatic scenery. Railay Beach is accessible only by boat, hemmed in by 100-metre limestone cliffs — it's the country's most photographed beach for good reason. Ao Nang is the more accessible base with a wide range of hotels and easy boat access to the Four Islands. Koh Phi Phi's Maya Bay (reopened with visitor limits) remains breathtaking despite the crowds.
For solitude, head to Koh Lanta. Long Beach and Kantiang Bay are spacious, uncrowded, and backed by jungle rather than high-rises. The Similan Islands — open October to May only — offer the clearest water in Thailand and world-class diving at Richelieu Rock.

Best Beaches on the Gulf Coast
Koh Samui, Koh Phangan & Koh Tao
The Gulf of Thailand's trio of islands — Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao — are Thailand's other beach paradise, with a crucial advantage: their best weather (January to August) overlaps with the Andaman coast's monsoon, so there's always a sunny option.
Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach is the most developed — a long sweep of sand with restaurants, bars, and water sports. For something quieter, Lamai is more laid-back, and Maenam on the north coast is peaceful and family-friendly. Silver Beach (Crystal Bay) is a tiny stunner between Chaweng and Lamai.
Koh Phangan is best known for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, but its best beaches are elsewhere. Bottle Beach is a secluded north-coast beauty reached by boat or jungle trail. Thong Nai Pan Noi is a gorgeous crescent with boutique resorts. Haad Salad and Haad Yao on the west coast have calm water and sunset views.
Koh Tao is a diver's paradise with the cheapest PADI certification in the world, but the beaches hold their own. Sairee Beach is the social hub. Tanote Bay and Ao Leuk are snorkelling playgrounds. Shark Bay regularly delivers sightings of blacktip reef sharks.

Best Thai Islands
Choosing the right island depends on what you want. For luxury and convenience: Koh Samui has an international airport, five-star resorts, and Michelin-worthy dining. For diving: Koh Tao and the Similan Islands are unmatched. For backpacker vibes: Koh Phangan (beyond the Full Moon Party) and Koh Lanta deliver affordable bungalows and a social scene.
For honeymooners: Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga Bay is a peaceful Muslim fishing island with luxury resorts, no party scene, and jaw-dropping views of the karsts. Koh Lipe in the far south near the Malaysian border has Maldives-quality water with Thai prices — it's worth the extra travel time.
For families: Koh Lanta's gentle beaches and laid-back pace are ideal. Koh Samui offers the most infrastructure. Koh Chang in eastern Thailand is large, affordable, and still under the radar compared to the southern islands.
Best Beaches Near Bangkok
Bangkok is not a beach city, but several excellent beaches are within a few hours' drive. Hua Hin (2.5 hours south) is the closest proper beach resort town — popular with Thai families and weekenders, with a long sandy beach, excellent seafood, and Cicada night market.
Koh Samet (3 hours southeast) is Bangkok's weekend island getaway. Sai Kaew Beach is the busiest; Ao Phrao on the west coast is quieter and more upscale. Ferries run frequently from Ban Phe pier.
Koh Chang (5 hours east) is Thailand's second-largest island and surprisingly uncrowded. White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach offer a good mix of convenience and character. The nearby Koh Kood is even quieter — a genuine hidden gem with crystal-clear water and almost no crowds.
For a day trip: Bang Saen beach (1.5 hours) is popular with Thai locals but rarely visited by tourists. It's not Thailand's most beautiful beach, but the seafood is outstanding and the atmosphere is authentically Thai.
Best Time for Beaches in Thailand
Thailand's two coastlines run on opposite monsoon schedules, which means great beach weather is available year-round — you just need to pick the right coast.
Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Similan Islands): November to April is peak season with calm seas and clear skies. May to October brings the southwest monsoon — some resorts on smaller islands close entirely, and boat services are reduced. Phuket and Krabi remain open year-round with lower prices and fewer crowds, though expect afternoon rain.
Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao): January to August is the best window, with the driest months being February to April. The Gulf monsoon hits hardest in November, with heavy rain and rough seas. December can be wet but often clears by Christmas.
The sweet spot for beach lovers on a budget: visit the Gulf islands in May–July when the Andaman coast is in monsoon mode. You'll get sunshine, warm water, and significantly lower prices on flights and accommodation.
Golden rule: Andaman coast = November to April. Gulf coast = January to August. Overlap months (January–April) mean both coastlines are at their best — but also at their most expensive.
Hidden Beaches & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Thailand still has genuinely uncrowded beaches if you know where to look. Koh Kood in eastern Thailand is large, lush, and virtually tourist-free outside of Thai holidays. The beaches are pristine and the jungle interior is untouched.
Koh Mak, Koh Kood's smaller neighbour, is car-free and tranquil. Koh Bulon Leh in the far Andaman south has a single sandy strip with a handful of bungalows — no ATMs, no nightlife, just sea and sky. Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai in Phang Nga Bay sit within view of Phuket but feel like a different world.
On the mainland, Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang province has deserted beaches and sea caves. Koh Libong nearby is a dugong habitat with barely any tourism infrastructure. These spots require more planning but reward with the Thailand experience that Phuket had 30 years ago.
