About Koh Tao
Koh Tao certifies more new scuba divers than almost anywhere on earth, and the island is unapologetically organised around it: dozens of dive schools line Sairee Beach and Mae Haad, courses cost roughly half what they do in most of the world, and the social scene runs on post-dive sunset beers. The diving itself is genuinely good for a training island — resident green and hawksbill turtles, blacktip reef sharks in the shallows, and pinnacle sites like Chumphon Pinnacle where whale sharks cruise through in season.
Above the waterline, the island is small, steep, and prettier than it needs to be. Koh Nang Yuan — three islets joined by a photogenic sandbar — sits just offshore, the east-coast bays (Tanote, Ao Leuk) offer quiet snorkelling straight off the sand, and viewpoints like John-Suwan repay the sweaty scramble. Non-divers fill their days fine, but it's the certification-and-fun-dive economy that sets the island's rhythm: early boats out, log books at lunch, and a young, international crowd comparing courses over dinner.

Getting there
Lomprayah catamarans connect from Chumphon in about 1.5–2 hours (฿600–700) — the standard route from Bangkok is an overnight bus or train to Chumphon plus the morning boat. Ferries also arrive from Koh Phangan (~1 hr) and Koh Samui (~1.5–2 hrs). No airport.

How do you get to Koh Tao?
Most travellers take the Lomprayah route: a bus or overnight train from Bangkok to Chumphon, then the catamaran (1.5–2 hours). Coming up the island chain, ferries run from Koh Samui (~1.5–2 hrs) and Koh Phangan (~1 hr) several times daily. Seas get rough from late October through December — the crossing can be genuinely unpleasant or cancelled in that window.
How much does a dive course cost on Koh Tao?
An SSI or PADI Open Water certification typically runs ฿9,000–11,000 including three or four nights of simple accommodation — among the cheapest anywhere. Fun dives run ฿700–1,000 each in packs. Schools differ more in class size and boat comfort than price, so choose on reviews and instructor ratio rather than the last ฿500.
Is Koh Tao worth visiting if you don't dive?
Yes, with adjusted expectations: it's a small, steep island whose best beaches (Sairee aside) are pocket bays. Snorkelling is the best in the Gulf straight off the sand, Koh Nang Yuan is a half-day classic, and the viewpoint hikes are excellent. If you want long swimming beaches and resort variety, Samui or Phangan serve that better.
When is diving visibility best?
Roughly March through September, with April–June the sweet spot for calm seas and 20 m+ visibility — and whale-shark sightings concentrated around March–May. The October–December monsoon brings swell, runoff, and cancelled trips; many schools still run courses, but it's the worst window to plan a diving holiday around.
