Maya Bay Guide

The beach from The Beach, back from its closure, with blacktip sharks in the shallows

By Mac Kiley · 8 min read · Updated Oct 21, 2026

Maya Bay is the cove on Koh Phi Phi Leh, the uninhabited island just south of Phi Phi Don, where The Beach, the 2000 film with Leonardo DiCaprio, was shot. Two decades of crowds wrecked its reef, so it closed from 2018 to 2022, and it now runs on strict rules. Boats land at a pier on the back of the island and you walk through to the sand, you can wade to your knees but not swim, visits come in one-hour rounds of up to 375 people, and the bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September.

Foreign adults pay a ฿400 park fee. It's still the most beautiful cove in the country, and the whole trick is timing. Be there at 07:00 from Phi Phi Don, before the day boats from Phuket and Krabi arrive.

Key Facts

Closed 1 August to 30 September, every year

The park closes Maya Bay and the two bays behind it, Loh Samah and Lo Ko, for two months of rehabilitation, and because boats can't dock safely in the monsoon swell. It reopens on 1 October. Phi Phi tours keep running in those months, but they don't land.

The park fee is ฿400

Foreign adults pay ฿400 and children ฿200 to enter Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which covers Maya Bay, Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island. Big tours from Phuket and Krabi usually include it. Private longtails usually don't, so carry cash.

Wade, don't swim

Swimming in Maya Bay has been banned since it reopened, to protect the recovering reef and the blacktip reef sharks that breed in the shallows. You can wade to knee depth. Lifeguards watch the line, and there are fines for crossing the buoys.

Boats land at the back of the island

No boat enters the bay itself. They drop you at the pier at Loh Samah, on the far side of the headland, and you walk about 300 m on a boardwalk, five to ten minutes, with toilets and a café on the way.

One-hour rounds, 07:00 to 18:00

The bay opens at 07:00 and closes at 18:00, and visits run in rounds of up to 375 people for an hour each, about 4,125 people a day.

Beat the day boats

Tours from Phuket and Krabi reach Maya Bay between about 09:30 and 11:00. A 07:00 longtail from Phi Phi Don gets you there in the quiet first hours, which is the single best reason to sleep on the island.

Why Maya Bay Is Famous, and Why It Closed

Maya Bay was already beautiful before Hollywood found it, a cove of white sand closed in on three sides by limestone cliffs. The Beach, the 2000 film with Leonardo DiCaprio, made it the most photographed beach in Thailand, and by the 2010s it was taking about 5,000 visitors a day, with peaks of 7,000 to 8,000, most of them arriving on boats that anchored over the reef.

By 2018 the reef cover had fallen below 8%, and in June that year the park closed the bay. It stayed shut until January 2022. In that time more than 30,000 pieces of coral were replanted, about half of which survived, and the blacktip reef sharks came back within months. They now breed in the bay, and on 2 September 2026 park staff counted 278 adults near the beach, the highest count of that year's survey.

The reopening came with the rules that shape a visit now, the back-door landing, the ban on swimming, the one-hour rounds and the two-month closure every year.

What a Visit Is Like Now

Your boat ties up at the pier in Loh Samah Bay, on the back of Phi Phi Leh, and then moves off to a buoy while you walk. The boardwalk takes you through the trees and over the headland to the beach in five to ten minutes. On the sand you get about an hour. You can walk the beach, take the photograph and wade into the shallows up to your knees, and that's where you're most likely to see the sharks, small blacktips cruising close to shore.

Don't treat it as a beach day. There's no swimming, no sunbathing session, no lunch on the sand, and drones need a permit. The point is the view, and it holds up. If you want time in the water, the snorkel stops on the same loop and Bamboo Island, on the same park ticket, are where it happens.

Maya Bay is closed to landings from 1 August to 30 September every year, when tours view it from the water or skip it. Agree the full price of a private longtail, fee and stops included, before you get on, because extras demanded on the day are a known complaint.

How to Get to Maya Bay

Maya Bay is on Koh Phi Phi Leh, which nobody lives on, so there's nowhere to stay on the island itself. Every visit is a boat trip, and where you start decides how good it is.

From Phi Phi Don, the best way

Phi Phi Leh is 20 to 30 minutes by longtail from Tonsai, the main village on Phi Phi Don. Every hotel and dive shop sells the half-day circuit of Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and the snorkel spots, at about ฿1,200–1,500 a person on a shared boat, or ฿2,500–3,500 for a private longtail for up to six. The 07:00 departure is the whole difference, because it lands you in the bay's quiet first hours and leaves Pileh Lagoon before the speedboats from Phuket arrive. On a private boat, agree the price, the park fee and every stop before you leave the beach.

From Phuket

A speedboat day tour is the efficient way from Phuket. They pick up at your hotel, run 8 to 11 hours, and cost about ฿1,900–6,200, with a standard speedboat trip from about ฿2,400, usually with Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and lunch on Phi Phi Don. Some include the park fee and some don't. Book the earliest departure on offer, because the later boats all reach Maya Bay together.

From Krabi and Ao Nang

Phi Phi is about 45 minutes by speedboat from Krabi's piers, and day tours from Ao Nang and Krabi Town with hotel pickup, lunch and four or five stops start at about $33 on the booking sites, plus the park fee where it isn't included. A private longtail from Ao Nang for a group of six costs about ฿7,000, a long way in an open boat but your own schedule.

The Best Time to Visit Maya Bay

Time of day matters more than the month. The bay opens at 07:00, and the day boats from Phuket and Krabi arrive between about 09:30 and 11:00. Before them you share the sand with a round or two of early boats, and after them it's at its busiest until mid-afternoon. If you can only day-trip, book the first departure your operator sells.

For the season, November to April is the dry season on the Andaman coast, with the calmest seas. From May the monsoon swell picks up, boats get canceled on rough days, and from 1 August to 30 September the bay is closed altogether. October, just after it reopens, is still wet, so keep a spare day if Maya Bay is the reason for your trip.

Day Trip or Stay on Phi Phi?

If Maya Bay is the point, stay two nights on Phi Phi Don. A day tour from Phuket or Krabi spends four or more hours on boats and lands you at Maya Bay at exactly the hour everyone else does. Sleeping on Phi Phi Don puts you on the 07:00 longtail, gives you Pileh Lagoon before the speedboats and leaves the afternoon free for the viewpoint and Long Beach.

The day trip still makes sense when your trip is based in Phuket and the days are full, or in the monsoon months, when a flexible tour you can rebook beats paying for island nights in rough weather. The Koh Phi Phi guide covers where to stay on the island and how to get there.

What Else Is on the Maya Bay Circuit

Almost every Maya Bay trip is a loop around Phi Phi Leh. Pileh Lagoon is the other highlight, a pool of green water enclosed by sixty-meter cliffs that the boats drift into. The tours also pass Viking Cave and stop to snorkel off Loh Samah. Longer trips add Monkey Beach on Phi Phi Don and Bamboo Island, a ring of white sand to the northeast on the same park ticket.
