Koh Phi Phi Islands
Thailand's most beautiful islands — worth doing properly.
Phi Phi in One Paragraph
The Phi Phi Islands are a six-island archipelago in Thailand's Krabi province, two hours by ferry from either Phuket or Krabi — and the most spectacular scenery in the country: sheer limestone cliffs, the twin bays of Koh Phi Phi Don separated by a palm-lined sandbar, and Maya Bay on uninhabited Phi Phi Leh, the beach that 'The Beach' made famous. Only Phi Phi Don is inhabited; it's entirely car-free, walkable, and busier than the photos suggest. The single best decision you can make is to stay overnight rather than day-trip: you'll see Maya Bay at 7am before 90% of visitors arrive, catch the viewpoint at sunset, and understand why people forgive this island everything. Expect prices about 25–40% above the mainland, and note the national park closes Maya Bay each August–September for ecological recovery.

Key Facts (2026)
National park fee: ฿400
The Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park fee (฿400 adults, ฿200 children) applies to Phi Phi Leh boat trips including Maya Bay. Cash, collected at the pier or on the boat. Keep the ticket — it's valid all day.
No cars, no scooters
Phi Phi Don is entirely pedestrian — everything in Tonsai village is walkable, and longtail boats work as taxis to the outer beaches (฿100–400). Pack light: your bag travels from the pier by handcart or your own shoulders.
Costs run ~25–40% above the mainland
Everything arrives by boat and it shows: meals ฿150–400, beer ฿80–150, mid-range rooms ฿2,000–4,500. ATMs exist in Tonsai but charge the standard ฿220 fee — bring cash from the mainland.
How to Get to Koh Phi Phi
From Phuket: ferries leave Rassada Pier (near Phuket Town) at roughly 8:30, 11:00, 13:30, and 15:00, taking about 2 hours to Phi Phi's Tonsai Pier (฿450–700). From Krabi: ferries leave Klong Jirad Pier on a similar schedule, also ~2 hours (฿450–700). Speedboats halve the time for about double the price and a bumpier ride — worth it only if you're prone to seasickness in reverse (the big ferries roll more gently).
There's no airport on Phi Phi. The standard routing is to fly into Phuket (HKT) or Krabi (KBV) and connect. If your flight lands by early afternoon you can be on the island the same day; later arrivals should overnight near the pier and take the morning boat. Combined flight-transfer-ferry tickets on 12Go handle the pier connections automatically.
Leaving, the same ferries run in reverse — which is what makes Phi Phi such a natural mid-point between Krabi and Phuket on a longer route (it's exactly how our 10-day itinerary sequences it: Krabi → Phi Phi → Phuket, no backtracking).
Phuket / Krabi Airport → ferry pier
Book the airport-to-pier transfer with your ferry
Rassada Pier is 45 minutes from Phuket airport; Klong Jirad is 40 minutes from Krabi airport. A pre-booked Kiwitaxi (code THAILAND5) takes the timing risk out of tight flight-to-ferry connections — missing the last boat means an unplanned mainland night.

Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon & the Phi Phi Leh Circuit
Maya Bay is real and it's genuinely that beautiful — a 250-meter arc of white sand enclosed on three sides by 100-meter cliffs. Since reopening after its 2018–2021 ecological closure, visits are managed: boats moor at a floating pontoon on the island's back side, you walk a short boardwalk through to the beach, swimming in the bay itself is prohibited (blacktip reef sharks have returned to breed — you'll likely see them from the sand), and the bay closes entirely each August–September. Go at 7am on the first boats from Phi Phi Don and you'll share it with dozens rather than the midday thousands arriving from Phuket.
The standard Phi Phi Leh circuit — bookable as a half-day longtail (฿1,200–1,500 group, ฿2,500–3,500 private) or speedboat tour — pairs Maya Bay with Pileh Lagoon, a completely cliff-enclosed pool of impossibly green water that's best around midday light, plus Viking Cave and the Loh Samah snorkel stop. Add Bamboo Island (its own perfect white-sand ring, part of the same park ticket) on longer tours.
Photographers: the classic elevated Maya Bay angle is shot from the boat approach, not the beach. For the postcard over Phi Phi Don's twin bays, that's the Viewpoint hike on the main island — see below.
Things to Do on Phi Phi Don
The Viewpoint (points 1, 2, and 3, ฿30–50 entry) is the essential Phi Phi Don experience: a sweaty 20–30 minute climb from Tonsai village to the panorama over the twin bays and the sandbar between them. Go for the 6pm golden hour and carry water. Long Beach, a 5-minute longtail hop (or 30-minute coastal walk) from Tonsai, has the island's best swimming sand and a straight-on view of Phi Phi Leh across the channel.
Underwater is half the point here. Phi Phi's dive scene is one of Thailand's best-value: two-dive fun-dive days run ฿2,500–3,500, Open Water certification ฿12,000–14,000, and the King Cruiser wreck, Shark Point, and Bida Nok sites are 30–60 minutes out. Snorkelers get leopard and blacktip sharks off Long Beach's Shark Point at dawn — from the beach, no boat needed.
Nights center on Loh Dalum bay: fire shows, beach bars, and buckets until late. It's fun, unpretentious, and loud — if that's not your evening, sleep at Long Beach or the island's far north (Laem Tong) and Tonsai's noise disappears entirely.

Where to Stay on Koh Phi Phi
Tonsai Village is the hub — ferry pier, restaurants, dive shops, nightlife — and its rooms are the island's cheapest (hostels ฿400–700, guesthouses ฿1,200–2,500). Stay here for convenience and social energy; bring earplugs, because the bass from Loh Dalum carries until 1–2am.
Long Beach (Hat Yao) is the sweet spot for most couples: the best sand on the island, quiet nights, sunrise views of Phi Phi Leh, and only a ฿100–150 longtail ride (or a half-hour walk at low tide) from the village. Mid-range bungalows run ฿2,000–4,500.
Laem Tong, the island's far northern tip, is the upscale escape — a handful of resorts (Zeavola, Holiday Inn, SAii) on a secluded beach with Bamboo Island offshore. It's 30–40 minutes by longtail from Tonsai, which is precisely the appeal: you're on Phi Phi for its scenery, not its parties. Book any of these 2–3 months ahead for December–February.

Day Trip or Overnight?
Overnight, if you can possibly spare the night — it's the single biggest quality upgrade available on Phi Phi. Day tours from Phuket or Krabi spend 4+ hours of the day on boats and arrive at Maya Bay exactly when everyone else does. Staying 2 nights (the right number for most people) gets you Maya Bay at 7am, the viewpoint at sunset, Long Beach in between, and the island's calm early mornings that day-trippers never see.
The day trip still earns its place in two cases: your trip is Phuket-based and packed, or you're traveling in August–September when Maya Bay is closed and seas are rough — in monsoon conditions, a flexible speedboat tour beats committing to island nights. If you do day-trip, book the earliest departure offered and confirm the boat goes to Pileh Lagoon, not just Maya Bay.
