About Pattaya
Pattaya's reputation precedes it, but the city has been reinventing itself for over a decade. Yes, Walking Street still runs its neon-lit gauntlet of bars and clubs, but today's Pattaya also has Michelin-recommended restaurants, international schools drawing families, and a 15-km beachfront promenade that's undergone major upgrades. The Sanctuary of Truth — a 105-meter hand-carved wooden temple on the coast — is one of Thailand's most ambitious architectural projects.
The real draw for many visitors is proximity to Bangkok (just 90 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport) combined with genuine beach access. Koh Larn, a 45-minute ferry ride away, has the clear turquoise water that Pattaya Beach itself lacks. Jomtien, south of the city, is calmer and popular with long-stay visitors. Na Jomtien and Bang Saray further south feel like different towns entirely — quiet, local, and increasingly popular with remote workers and retirees who want coast without chaos.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pattaya
Is Pattaya suitable for families?
More than you'd expect. Jomtien and Na Jomtien are family-friendly areas well away from Walking Street. Attractions like Ramayana Water Park (Thailand's largest), Nong Nooch Garden, and the Pattaya Floating Market cater to kids. Many international schools serve the large expat community. Just choose your hotel location carefully.
How do you get to Koh Larn from Pattaya?
Public ferries leave from Bali Hai Pier every 30 minutes (฿30 one way, 45 minutes). Speedboats cost ฿1,500–2,500 for a private charter (15 minutes). On Koh Larn, rent a motorbike (฿300/day) or take a songthaew between beaches. Tawaen Beach is the busiest; Samae Beach and Tien Beach are quieter.
Is Pattaya safe?
Pattaya is generally safe for tourists. Petty theft and drink-spiking scams exist in the nightlife areas — apply standard precautions. The biggest actual risk is motorbike accidents. Outside the entertainment zones, Pattaya is a normal Thai city with families, markets, and temples. Jomtien and Na Jomtien feel very safe at all hours.
How far is Pattaya from Bangkok's airports?
Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya is about 120 km — roughly 1.5 hours by car or airport bus (฿130). Don Mueang Airport is further, around 2.5 hours depending on traffic. Airport buses to Pattaya run from Suvarnabhumi roughly every 2 hours. Grab from the airport costs ฿1,200–1,500.
