Phi Phi Islands

The Andaman's postcard archipelago — Maya Bay, longtail coves, and viewpoint sunsets

About Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are the Andaman's postcard: two karst islands whose cliffs rise straight from water so clear the longtails look like they're floating on glass. Maya Bay on uninhabited Phi Phi Leh — the beach from The Beach — remains among the most famous sights in Thailand, now visited under strict rules after a multi-year closure let its reef and blacktip sharks recover: no swimming in the bay, boats moor at a back-side pontoon, and daily numbers are capped.

All the accommodation sits on Phi Phi Don, most of it around Tonsai, the boat-only village on the sandbar between the island's twin bays. It's dense, walkable, and famously split-personality: dive shops and family resorts by day, fire shows and beach clubs after dark. Climb to the viewpoint above the village for the double-bay panorama that sells a million tours, or take a longtail to quieter corners — Long Beach's resident sharks, Nui and Monkey Beach's coves, and the snorkel loop around Phi Phi Leh's lagoons. It is crowded, unashamedly so in season; go early, stay overnight after the day-trippers leave, and the islands still justify every photo.

Frequently Asked Questions about Phi Phi Islands

How do you get to Phi Phi?

By boat only: ferries and speedboats from Phuket (Rassada pier, ~2 hours) and Krabi (~1.5–2 hours) run several times daily year-round, joined by Koh Lanta boats in high season. Everything arrives at Tonsai pier on Phi Phi Don; there's a ฿20–30 pier fee on arrival. Monsoon crossings (May–October) can be rough or cancelled — book flexible tickets then.

Can you swim at Maya Bay?

No. Since the 2018–2022 closure and restoration, boats can no longer enter or anchor in the bay and swimming is prohibited — visitors arrive at a pontoon on the island's back side, walk through, and photograph from the sand. Visits are capped and the bay closes annually (typically August–September) for recovery. The rules are enforced, and the returning blacktip sharks are the proof they work.

Should you day-trip or stay overnight?

Day tours from Phuket and Krabi cover the greatest-hits loop, but they all arrive together — Maya Bay at 10am is a crowd scene. Staying a night or two flips the experience: the viewpoint at sunrise, Long Beach before the boats, and Tonsai after the last ferry leaves are different islands. Divers and nightlife-seekers should stay; if you only want the photos, an early-start day tour does it.

Is Phi Phi a party island?

Tonsai's beachfront is genuinely loud until late — fire shows, buckets, beach clubs — and light sleepers should book away from it: Laem Tong and Long Beach resorts are boat-taxi quiet, and anything up the hill escapes the bass. The party is concentrated, though; most of Phi Phi Don and all of Phi Phi Leh are cliffs, jungle, and water.
