About Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan carries two reputations at once, and they barely overlap on the map. The southeast corner is Haad Rin, home of the Full Moon Party — the all-night beach rave that draws tens of thousands every lunar cycle and has spun off half-moon and jungle editions in between. The rest of the island, and especially the west and north coasts, is one of Thailand's calmest corners: the Sritanu area is now a serious yoga and wellness hub, Thong Nai Pan's twin bays feel like Samui thirty years ago, and Bottle Beach still requires a boat or a sweaty jungle hike to reach.
The island is Samui's wilder, greener neighbour — bigger than it looks, with a jungle interior of waterfalls and viewpoints and a ring of beaches that step down in energy the farther you get from Haad Rin. Party pilgrims and silent-retreat guests genuinely share the same island; choosing your coast is choosing your holiday. Boats from Samui take half an hour, which also makes the island an easy add-on rather than a commitment.

Getting there
Ferries run from Koh Samui (30–60 min, ฿300–500) and from Surat Thani town, train station, and airport as combo tickets (2.5–4.5 hrs). Lomprayah and Seatran catamarans also connect from Chumphon via Koh Tao. There is no airport — Samui's is the closest, one boat away.

How do you get to Koh Phangan?
Via Koh Samui (ferries every hour or so from Nathon, Maenam, and Bangrak — 30–60 minutes) or directly from Surat Thani by combo bus-and-boat ticket (2.5–4.5 hours depending on the pier). From Bangkok, the classic route is an overnight train or bus to Surat Thani plus the morning ferry; flying to Samui and hopping across is the fast option.
When is the Full Moon Party?
Every full moon, on Haad Rin Sunrise Beach, with the date occasionally shifted a day for Buddhist holidays — check the current calendar before booking. Expect a ฿200–300 entry donation, packed boats from Samui, and Haad Rin accommodation requiring multi-night minimums around the date. If you want quiet, the west coast barely notices the party; if you want the party, book Haad Rin weeks ahead.
Which part of the island should you stay on?
Haad Rin for the party scene; Thong Sala and the nearby west coast (Sritanu, Haad Yao) for yoga, sunsets, and long quiet beaches; Thong Nai Pan in the northeast for the prettiest resort bays. Is Koh Phangan only about the Full Moon Party?
No — most of the island runs at a completely different speed. Outside Haad Rin you'll find retreat centres, family resorts, empty northern beaches, and a jungle interior of waterfalls. Plenty of visitors come specifically for the wellness scene and never see a bucket bar. The party is one beach, one night a month; the island is the other 95%.
