Fisherman's Village, Koh Samui

Samui's best evening, on a street of old wooden shophouses

By Mac Kiley · 7 min read · Updated Oct 24, 2026

Fisherman's Village is the old seafront of Bophut, on Koh Samui's north coast, a strip of wooden Chinese-Thai shophouses that now hold restaurants, boutique hotels, bars and shops, with Bophut Beach behind them and Koh Phangan across the water. It's the island's best evening out, and the night you go matters. On Friday the beach road closes to traffic for the Walking Street, the island's big night market, from about 17:00 until 22:00 or 23:00.

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday the smaller market at the Wharf, at the west end of the village, has the stalls, and on Thursday and Saturday there's no market, just dinner. Come in the late afternoon, watch the sunset from the sand, eat, and stay for the fire show on the beach at Coco Tam's.

Key Facts

The Walking Street is Friday from 17:00

The beach road closes to traffic from about 16:30, the stalls are in full swing by 18:00, and it winds down around 22:00 to 23:00. The crush peaks from 19:00 to 20:30.

The Wharf market runs five nights

Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 17:00 to midnight, Tuesday and Sunday from 16:30 to 23:30. It's closed Thursday and Saturday.

Coco Tam's fire show is at 19:15 and 21:00

On the beach in the middle of the village, open from noon to midnight. Arrive around 17:30 for a bean bag on the sand.

20 to 25 minutes from Chaweng

It's about 8 km, too far to walk, so take a Grab or taxi. The airport is 10 to 15 minutes away. On Friday parking runs out after 18:00.

Bring cash

Market stalls take baht only, so carry small notes. The restaurants mostly take cards.

A beach for sunset, not swimming

Bophut Beach is calm but narrow, and reviewers report an outflow near the east entrance to the village. Swim at Chaweng or Choeng Mon and come here for the evening.

A Little History, and The White Lotus

Bophut was a fishing village and trading port long before the resorts, and the wooden Chinese-Thai shophouses along the beach road are what's left of it, most of them now restaurants, boutique hotels and shops. It's the best-preserved old street on the island, and the reason the village feels different from Chaweng.

It had a turn on screen in 2025. The White Lotus filmed its third season on Samui, and its Songkran street scenes were shot in the village, while the security station and jewelry shop scenes were filmed at the Anantara Bophut resort at the west end.

Which Night to Go

Friday, if you can. The Walking Street fills the whole beach road with food stalls, seafood grilled to order, clothes, jewelry and souvenirs, with live music and the restaurants spilling onto the street. Entry is free. It gets very tight in the narrow sections by 19:00, so arrive before 18:00, walk it end to end while there's room, then go to dinner.

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday the stalls are at the Wharf Walking Street instead, a smaller market at the west end of the village. The food is at the back, toward the main road, and the shopping at the front. Prices aren't posted, so haggle. If you're taking a taxi, ask for Taco Bell or Pizza Hut and you'll be dropped at the right end.

Street food is cheap by village standards. Expect about ฿60–80 for pad thai, ฿50–80 for mango sticky rice, ฿80–120 for grilled coconut prawns and ฿10 a stick for satay, so ฿300–500 a person covers a good grazing dinner. Pop-up bars sell cocktails for about ฿99.

For shopping beyond the stalls, the boutiques along the street sell island clothes and jewelry, Saona Collection for handmade resort wear among them. The market stalls are the place for gifts, and haggling politely is expected there but not in the shops.

On Thursday and Saturday neither market runs, and the village is restaurants and bars. That's my pick for a quiet dinner by the water. Of the market nights, Friday is the busiest and Monday and Wednesday the calmest.

From our records, all rated 4.5 or higher on Google. The first four are in the village itself, and the last two are a short walk inland, where the Thai food is cheaper and, by most accounts, better.

After Dark

Coco Tam's is the village's beach bar, bean bags and platform beds on the sand, pizza that's better than it needs to be, and a fire show at 19:15 and 21:00. Get there around 17:30 for a spot and the sunset, and sit a row or two back from the front, where you get the whole show without the smell of kerosene. Upstairs, Easy on Tam's is a speakeasy-style bar for a drink after the show.

After dinner, the bars along the street are quieter than anything in Chaweng. Garnish, upstairs in the village, is the cocktail bar, rated 4.9 on Google. Karma Sutra has live music and cocktails, The Frog & Gecko runs a quiz on Wednesday nights, and Happy Elephant Square has live music most evenings.

For a massage before bed, Cyan Spa on the beach is open until 23:00 and takes cash only, and the small massage shops along the street charge about ฿300–600.

By Day

The village sleeps until late afternoon, so use the day elsewhere. Wat Bo Phuttharam, on the edge of the village, is a working temple where ฿10 buys a bucket of food for the carp, catfish and turtles in the moat. Go in daylight, cover your shoulders and knees, and keep clear of the dogs that gather after dark.

The Big Buddha is a short drive east, and the Big Buddha pier beyond it has the boats to Koh Phangan. For swimming, go to Chaweng or Choeng Mon, then come back to the village for the evening.

Practical Tips

Shops open from about 11:00 and the village comes alive after 17:00, so an early afternoon visit is calm and the evening is the main event.

If you're driving, park at the Wharf at the west end, about ฿20 for a scooter and from ฿40 for a car. Scooters aren't allowed on the walking street during the Friday market, roughly 18:00 to 22:00, and badly parked bikes get towed, with a release fee of ฿500 or more.

Bring cash. The stalls, pop-up bars and the beach side of Coco Tam's take baht only, and the ATMs charge foreign cards about ฿250 a withdrawal, so draw a larger amount once. The popular restaurants fill up in high season, so book three to five days ahead through their Facebook or Instagram pages.

Staying in Fisherman's Village

Bophut is the all-round base on Samui, with mid-range rooms at about ฿2,500–5,000 a night. Staying here puts the best dinner street on the island on your doorstep, the airport 10 to 15 minutes away and the Bangrak ferry piers about 10. What you give up is a swimming beach, and on Friday nights the street outside your door is the market. If you'd rather sleep away from the crowd, stay at the quieter ends of Bophut Beach and walk in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Fisherman's Village, Koh Samui.

The big one, the Walking Street on the beach road, is Friday from about 17:00 to 22:00 or 23:00. The smaller Wharf market at the west end of the village runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 17:00 to midnight, and Tuesday and Sunday from 16:30 to 23:30. There's no market on Thursday or Saturday.

Not comfortably. It's about 8 km along the main road. A Grab or taxi takes 20 to 25 minutes, and on Friday it's worth booking the ride back early, because demand peaks around 21:00 to 22:00.

The old seafront of Bophut on Samui's north coast, a street of wooden Chinese-Thai shophouses that now holds restaurants, boutique hotels, bars and shops beside Bophut Beach. It's best known for its Friday Walking Street market.

The beachfront restaurants are. The market stalls and the Thai places a short walk inland are not. Ban Thai and Ran Khang Non cook at local prices, and the Walking Street's street food is cheap. Bring cash for the stalls.

19:15 and 21:00, on the beach. Coco Tam's opens at noon, and arriving around 17:30 gets you a bean bag and the sunset first.

You can, but I wouldn't. The beach is narrow, the water is calm but not the clearest on the island, and reviewers report an outflow near the village's east entrance. Swim at Chaweng or Choeng Mon and come here for the evening.

Parking is limited and runs out on Friday after about 18:00, when the beach road closes. Arrive early, or take a Grab or taxi and save yourself the search.

Fly Bangkok Airways to Samui, about 1 hour 10 minutes, then it's 10 to 15 minutes by car to Bophut. The cheaper route is a flight or train to Surat Thani and the bus-and-ferry ticket to the island, then a taxi across.

February to September, when Samui is driest, with February to April the best of it. October to December is the island's rainy season. Whatever the month, go in the late afternoon and stay for the evening.

Yes. It's calmer than Chaweng, the market street is closed to traffic on Friday nights, and the fire show and street food go down well with children. Go early on Friday before the narrow sections get crowded, or pick a calmer Monday or Wednesday.

Partly. Season three's Songkran street scenes were filmed in the village, and the security station and jewelry shop scenes at the Anantara Bophut resort at its west end. Most of the hotel scenes were shot at the Four Seasons on the other side of the island.

10 to 15 minutes by car. Bophut is one of the closest areas to Samui airport, along with Choeng Mon and Chaweng.
