Into the Wild Elephant Camp
Situated in central Chiang Mai, Into the Wild Elephant Camp is a tour operator and sanctuary focused on responsible, up-close encounters with elephants. What sets it apart is its genuine commitment to animal welfare — visitors consistently note how healthy and content the elephants appear, and the camp's educational approach ensures that interactions are guided by respect for the animals rather than performance or spectacle. Hotel pickup is included, with guests transported to the camp via a local-style vehicle that adds to the authentic experience. During a visit, guests can expect to feed the elephants, walk alongside them, and observe their natural behaviours in a relaxed, outdoor mountain setting. Knowledgeable staff are present throughout to provide context on elephant care and conservation, making this a meaningful experience for solo travellers, couples, and families with children alike. The atmosphere is unhurried and personal, with plenty of opportunity for genuine interaction. Good to know: The camp operates seven days a week from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, offering flexibility for most travel itineraries. Comfortable, washable clothing is advisable, as activities take place outdoors and up close with the animals. Booking in advance through the camp's website at intothewildelephantcamp.com is strongly recommended to confirm availability, review current tour options, and arrange hotel pickup logistics.

Visitor Reviews
Into the Wild Elephant Camp was truly one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences of our time in Chiang Mai. From start to finish, everything was thoughtful, respectful, and centered on the well-being of the elephants. This is a no riding, no chains, no gimmicks sanctuary, and you can feel that commitment the moment you arrive. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and kind, taking time to explain each elephant’s story and how the camp prioritizes ethical, hands-off interaction. Watching these magnificent animals roam freely, socialize, and just be elephants was deeply moving. The day was perfectly paced, with beautiful jungle surroundings, amazing photo opportunities, and plenty of time simply observing and connecting in a calm, respectful way. The guides were warm, funny, and passionate, and their love for the elephants truly shows. The food was also delicious and thoughtfully prepared. If you’re looking for an authentic, humane elephant experience that aligns with responsible tourism, this is it. We left with a deeper appreciation for these animals and enormous respect for the work this camp is doing. I cannot recommend Into the Wild Elephant Camp highly enough. This is the gold standard. 🐘💚
Into the Wild offers a wonderful and very family-friendly experience in the mountains. Transportation is part of the charm: you’re taken in a local-style vehicle, similar to a large tuk-tuk, which is surprisingly comfortable and adds an authentic touch to the journey. The experience starts with feeding the elephants, followed by a short and easy walk, and then spending time simply watching them eat and move freely. Later, you join the elephants in a small muddy area—not deep or extreme, just a shallow mud pool where you get a bit dirty while covering the elephants with mud as well. The experience ends at the river, where everyone washes together, both people and elephants. It’s especially enjoyable for children and feels playful rather than intense. The guide was extremely kind and attentive, and lunch was included: a local meal adapted to Western tastes, not spicy and very suitable for families.
Into the Wild was an incredible experience getting to interact with the elephants & observe them in their home. It is so obvious how well cared for these huge babies are! The owner & others caring for the elephants are so knowledgeable & loving towards them. Learning the history and how they care for the elephants on a daily basis was so fascinating. This experience far exceeded my expectations & I recommend everyone do this when visiting Chang Mai. You will not be disappointed!! The photographer was an added bonus. Stunning professional-level photos to document this once in a lifetime experience! 🐘

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
