About Hua Hin
Hua Hin has been a royal retreat since the 1920s, when King Rama VII built Klai Kangwon Palace on its seafront — and it still carries that old-money Thai resort-town elegance. The beach stretches 6 km, the night market is one of Thailand's best for seafood (grilled squid, pla muek yang, and massive prawns at ฿200/plate), and the pace is distinctly unhurried. It's where Bangkok families come for the weekend, which keeps the quality high without the backpacker party scene.
South of town, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park protects a coastal landscape of mangroves, limestone hills, and the famous Phraya Nakhon Cave — a royal pavilion inside a collapsed sinkhole, lit by a natural skylight. North of Hua Hin, the vineyards of Hua Hin Hills (Monsoon Valley) offer wine tasting with an unlikely Thai terroir. The town sits on the Gulf Coast, so it largely escapes the Andaman monsoon, making it a reliable option when Phuket is underwater.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hua Hin
Is Hua Hin better than Pattaya for a beach trip from Bangkok?
For most travelers, yes. Hua Hin's beach is cleaner and longer, the town is more relaxed, and the food scene (especially the night market seafood) is excellent. Pattaya has more nightlife and water sports. Hua Hin attracts Thai families and couples; Pattaya caters more to international party tourism.
How do you get to Phraya Nakhon Cave?
Drive to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park (about 45 minutes south of Hua Hin), then hike 30 minutes up a steep trail from Laem Sala Beach. You can reach the beach by boat (฿400 return) or walk over the headland (20 minutes). Go in the morning when sunlight enters the cave — around 10:30am is ideal for photos.
Is Hua Hin just for older travelers?
It has that reputation, but it's shifting. Kiteboarding at Pak Nam Pran, the Vana Nava water park, and the weekend Cicada Market draw a younger crowd. The town has good coffee shops and boutique hotels now, not just big resorts. It's still quieter than Phuket or Koh Samui — which is exactly why many people choose it.
What's the best way to get from Bangkok to Hua Hin?
Driving takes about 2.5–3 hours via Highway 35. Minivans from Victory Monument run frequently (฿180, about 3.5 hours). The train from Bangkok is scenic but slow (4+ hours). Some travelers use the Hua Hin Airport for charter flights. On weekends, leave Bangkok early to avoid traffic past Phetchaburi.
