Krabi Hot Springs, Compared

A hot waterfall in the forest and a saltwater spring by the mangroves, an hour inland from Ao Nang

By Mac Kiley · 8 min read · Updated Oct 29, 2026

Krabi's hot springs are in Khlong Thom, about 65 km southeast of Ao Nang and Krabi Town, and there are two worth the drive. The Hot Stream Waterfall, Namtok Ron in Thai, is the one most tours mean by "Krabi Hot Springs". Hot water runs down a series of rock pools in the forest and spills into a cool river, about 35 to 42°C at the top. The Saline Hot Spring, about 11 km west, is a set of pools of naturally salty hot water by the mangroves, around 40 to 45°C, with private family pools and an earlier opening.

Both charge foreign adults ฿200. The waterfall is the one I'd pick for a first visit, because it's the prettier setting and it sits about 20 minutes from the Emerald Pool. The saline spring is the one I'd pick for a proper soak at 05:00 before the heat. There's no public transport to either, so you go on a tour, by taxi, or with your own wheels.

Key Facts

Foreign adults pay ฿200 at both

Children pay ฿100. At the Hot Stream, the shuttle from the gate is about ฿20 a person and parking about ฿50 a car. At the saline spring, a car costs ฿20. Bring cash, since the Hot Stream's gate is reported to be cash only.

The saline spring opens at 05:00

It's open 05:00–20:00 every day. The Hot Stream opens at 08:00 or 08:30, depending on the source, and closes at 18:00. Tour groups reach it from about 09:00.

About an hour from Ao Nang

The Hot Stream is about 64 km from Ao Nang, 1 to 1.5 hours by car, and about 50 minutes from Krabi Town. The saline spring is about 11 km west of it, on the Krabi side.

Soak for 15 to 20 minutes

The water runs about 35 to 42°C at the waterfall and 40 to 45°C at the saline pools. Get out after 15 to 20 minutes, drink water, and cool off in the river at the Hot Stream.

Wear shoes with grip

The rocks at the Hot Stream are slippery and sharp in places. Water shoes or sturdy sandals make the pools much easier, and there are no lockers at either spring.

The rainy-day plan

The springs work in any weather, which makes them Krabi's best plan when the island boats are canceled from May to October. The Emerald Pool is about 20 minutes from the Hot Stream.

Entry prices are the foreign rate. Thai residents pay much less at the Hot Stream. Temperatures vary by pool and by source, and the hottest pools are too hot to sit in. Hours change, so check the day before if you're going at the edges of the day.

The Hot Springs, One by One

Two public springs in Khlong Thom, a smaller one in Nuea Khlong closer to the airport, and a resort spa next to the waterfall.

The Hot Springs, One by One — numbered by rank. 1 Hot Stream Waterfall (Namtok Ron) · 2 Saline Hot Spring · 3 Krabi Hot Spring (Bang Phueng) · 4 Wareerak Hot Spring and Wellness
  1. 1. Hot Stream Waterfall (Namtok Ron), Khlong Thom Nuea

    Best first visit

This is the hot waterfall in the photos. Hot mineral water seeps up in the forest of the Khao Phra Bang Khram reserve and runs down a series of shallow rock pools, each a slightly different temperature, then drops over a small fall into the cool Khlong Thom river. You pick a pool, sit for 15 minutes or so, then cool off in the river below. There are a few mini pools higher up, and the hottest is too hot to stay in.

From the gate it's about a 400 to 500 m walk through the trees, or a ฿20 shuttle if you'd rather ride. There are changing rooms, showers, toilets, a food and drink stand, and Thai massage by the river. The area just below the main fall is the busiest, and it fills up when the tour vans arrive from about 09:00.

    Getting there
About 1 to 1.5 hours by car from Ao Nang, 50 minutes from Krabi Town. Use the "Hot Stream Krabi" pin.
    When to go
At opening, before the tour vans.
  2. 2. Saline Hot Spring, Huai Nam Khao, Khlong Thom

    Best for a long soak

Billed as Thailand's only saltwater hot spring, and a different kind of visit. The water comes up naturally hot and salty, around 40 to 45°C, and fills a set of built pools ringed by mangrove, with a couple of ponds you look at but don't bathe in, where bubbles rise through the mineral floor. Sources count the pools differently, from eight to about fourteen. Pools are divided up family-style, so you're not sharing with strangers.

It feels like a community bathing spot rather than a spa. There are gender-separated shower rooms, step-free access and traditional massage on site, and nature trails into the mangroves. The pools sit in full sun with little shade, which is why the 05:00 opening matters. No food, soap or shampoo go in, and many people bathe clothed.

    Getting there
About 11 km west of the Hot Stream, so it's a little closer to Ao Nang and Krabi Town. The parking lot is a short walk from the pools.
    When to go
At the 05:00 opening, before the heat builds.

  3. 3. Krabi Hot Spring (Bang Phueng), Khok Yang, Nuea Khlong

    Closest to the airport

A smaller, locally run hot-spring park on Highway 4 in Nuea Khlong, about 20 km from Krabi airport and much nearer Krabi Town than the Khlong Thom springs. It has hot bathing tubs, foot-soak tubs, a children's area, changing rooms and a restaurant, with the water reported at 40 to 50°C. Google lists it simply as "Krabi Hot Springs", so check you've got the right pin.

Its fees and hours aren't published reliably, and one visitor review calls the springs aging, so I'd treat it as a stop on the way to or from the airport rather than a day out.

    When to go
Daylight hours, and check at the gate.
  4. 4. Wareerak Hot Spring and Wellness, Khlong Thom Nuea, beside the Hot Stream

    Best spa day

A resort with its own spring-fed pools, under a kilometer from the Hot Stream. It isn't a public spring. Day visitors pay for pool access or book a spa package, with massage and treatments on site, so you don't need to stay the night. The pools vary in temperature, which suits children.

    When to go
Any time it's raining and you want a roof and a massage.

Which Krabi Hot Spring I'd Pick

For a first visit, the Hot Stream Waterfall. It's the one people picture, a warm cascade in the forest with a cold river to jump into, and it's the natural pair with the Emerald Pool about 20 minutes away. Go at opening and you'll have the main fall nearly to yourself for a while.

For a proper soak, the Saline Hot Spring. The water is hotter and saltier, the pools are private, and it opens at 05:00, so you can be in the water at sunrise and back in Ao Nang by mid-morning. It has little shade, though, so by late morning it's a hot place to sit in hot water. If you have children, the saline spring's family pools and step-free access are easier than the Hot Stream's slippery rocks, but the Hot Stream's river and shallow pools are more fun for them.

Doing both in a day is easy, since they're 11 km apart. I'd start at the saline spring at opening, move to the Emerald Pool for 08:30, then finish at the Hot Stream.

How to Get to the Krabi Hot Springs

No public transport runs out to Khlong Thom, so there are three ways to go. A tour is the easiest, and half-day hot spring and Emerald Pool tours with hotel pickup cost about ฿700–1,000. Full-day versions add Tiger Cave Temple on the way back. The catch is that every tour arrives at the same hours as every other tour.

A taxi or private driver for the day costs about ฿1,500–2,500 from Ao Nang or Krabi Town, depending on how long you keep it, and agree the price before you set off. Getting a ride back from the springs is hard, so keep the same driver waiting rather than taking a one-way Grab out.

Driving yourself gives you the early start. From Ao Nang it's 1 to 1.5 hours on good roads, and 50 minutes from Krabi Town. A car is easy to rent at Krabi airport. On a scooter it's a long ride each way, and you need an international driving permit that covers motorbikes.

Hot Springs and Emerald Pool Tours

Almost every tour that sells the hot springs means the Hot Stream Waterfall, usually with the Emerald Pool and often Tiger Cave Temple. The full-day versions run 8 to 9 hours with lunch and hotel pickup. A few tours stop at the saline spring instead, so check the stop list if that's the one you want. Some add mangrove kayaking at Ao Thalane.

Pairing the Hot Springs With the Emerald Pool

The Emerald Pool is about 20 minutes by car from the Hot Stream, and the two make the classic Krabi half day inland. It's a cool, spring-fed green pool in the forest of the Khao Phra Bang Khram sanctuary, 800 m from the parking lot or on a 1.4 km boardwalk loop, and it costs ฿400 for foreign adults and ฿200 for children, open 08:30–16:30. I'd do the Emerald Pool first at 08:30, before the vans, and save the hot water for after. My Emerald Pool guide covers the Blue Pool, the trail and the timing.

Best Time to Visit the Hot Springs

Time of day matters more than the month. The day tours reach the Hot Stream from about 09:00 and crowd the main fall from then on, so I'd be there at opening. Weekends and Thai holidays are busier. At the saline spring, go at the 05:00 opening, before the heat builds on its unshaded pools.

The springs are open all year. December to March is Krabi's dry season, with 24 to 82 mm of rain a month at the nearest weather station, but it's also hot, with highs of about 33 to 34°C from January to April, and that's when an early soak matters most. From May to October the rain builds to 237–350 mm a month, the island boats cancel on rough days, and the forest is at its greenest. A cool or wet day is the best one for hot water, so if you're in Krabi in the rainy season, keep the springs for the day the boats don't run.

What to Bring

Swimwear, a towel, water shoes or sandals with grip, plenty of drinking water and small baht notes for the gate, the shuttle and parking. Add mosquito repellent for the shaded walk to the Hot Stream and a hat for the saline spring, which has little shade. There are no lockers, so leave passports and valuables at the hotel. The Hot Stream drains into the river, so biodegradable sunscreen is the better choice there.

Hot Spring Etiquette and Health

Keep each soak to 15 to 20 minutes. The heat and the humidity together can bring on dizziness, dehydration and overheating faster than you'd expect, so get out, drink, and cool off in the river or the shade before going back in. Watch for the hottest mini pools and the odd hot trickle on the trails at the Hot Stream, which can scald.

Wear modest swimwear. At the saline spring many visitors bathe in clothes, so shorts and a T-shirt over swimwear are never out of place. Don't take food or drinks into the pools, and at the saline spring don't bring soap or shampoo near the water. Keep to the paths, and leave the ponds marked as closed to bathing alone.

What I'd Skip

I'd skip the Hot Stream in the middle of the day if I could choose, because that's when the tour groups crowd the main fall. I'd skip the saline spring at midday too, when the sun is on its pools and there's little shade. And I wouldn't drive out to the Bang Phueng hot spring in Nuea Khlong as a day trip in its own right. It's handy on the way to the airport, but the Khlong Thom springs are the reason to come.
