Where to Stay in Krabi

Ao Nang is Krabi tourism's engine room: a beachfront road of restaurants, dive shops, and tour desks, backed by several hundred hotels climbing the hillside behind. Logistics are its superpower. Longtail boats leave the beach itself for Railay and Phra Nang, speedboat tours head out to the Hong and Phi Phi islands, and every operator in the province picks up here first. And sunset from the beachfront restaurants, longtails silhouetted against the karsts, is still one of Thailand's great free shows.

Now the honest caveat, which is the beach itself. It's pleasant for a stroll and ordinary for swimming. The best sand is a boat ride away, and everyone treats it that way. Stays split between the walkable center, which is convenient and lively with some late-night noise near the strip, and the quieter Noppharat Thara end west of the headland, where the beach improves and the families settle.

Value is strong at every level. ฿400 gets a good hostel bed, ฿1,500–3,000 a well-reviewed pool hotel, and from ฿4,000 you're into real hillside luxury with Andaman views. If you can't decide where to stay in Krabi, Ao Nang is the answer that's never wrong.

Railay isn't an island, but it behaves like one. The peninsula is walled off by limestone cliffs, there are no roads or cars inside, and the only way in is a longtail boat, fifteen minutes from Ao Nang for ฿100–150. Four beaches share the headland: Railay West's resort sand, mangrove-backed Railay East where the boats dock, cave-framed Phra Nang (regularly ranked among Asia's best), and little Tonsai, the climbers' enclave. Add world-class rock climbing and the muddy scramble up to Princess Lagoon, and you have Thailand's most concentrated dose of scenery.

Accommodation is a small, captive stock. A line of upper-mid resorts on Railay West, cheaper rooms behind Railay East, bungalows in Tonsai. Captive means you'll pay more per star than in Ao Nang, and it means Railay sells out first, so book months ahead for high season. There are restaurants and a few bars, but nights here are early and dark-sky quiet.

The thing to plan around is the boat. Everything in and out, from arriving with luggage to dinner options to onward travel, depends on longtails and tides. Most travelers find two or three nights about perfect: full days inside the postcard, then back to a road-connected base before the isolation stops feeling romantic.

Krabi Town is what the brochures skip, and that's a shame. It's a working river town with morning markets, a riverfront guarded by giant crab statues, and the province's best cheap eating. The Friday-to-Sunday Walking Street market alone is worth planning around. Guesthouses run ฿400–800, solid hotels ฿1,000–1,500, and you're 15 minutes from the airport and next to the ferry pier, which makes it ideal for a first or last night, for overlanders, and for anyone who prefers towns to strips. The trade is obvious: Ao Nang's beach is a ฿60 songthaew ride, 25–30 minutes each way.

The Klong Muang–Tubkaek coast is the opposite bet. It's a low-density string of four- and five-star resorts on two quiet beaches facing the Hong Islands, 30 minutes from the airport and deliberately far from everything else. This is where Krabi keeps its Sofitel, its Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and the Tubkaak's grown-up beachfront calm. The sunsets here are better than the postcards suggest, the sand is empty, and there's nothing to walk to except the next resort's restaurant.

So: choose Town if Krabi is one chapter in a bigger overland or island-hopping story. Choose Klong Muang if the resort is the destination and you're happy day-tripping to the drama. Either way you'll pay less than the Phuket equivalent, which is Krabi's quiet structural bargain.
