Is Krabi Worth Visiting?

Is Krabi Worth Visiting? Yes, If You Know What Krabi Means

Yes, Krabi is worth visiting, and its limestone coast is some of the most dramatic scenery in Thailand. The thing to know first is that Krabi is a province, not a beach. Krabi Town is a river town with no beach at all, Ao Nang is a busy resort strip whose own sand is ordinary, and the places in the photos, Railay, Phra Nang and the islands, are a longtail ride away. Most disappointed reviews I read come from people who expected to step out of the hotel onto that view.

Come between November and April, base yourself in Ao Nang or Railay, and plan the trip around the boat days, and Krabi is cheaper and calmer than Phuket with better scenery. Below is who will love it and who should go elsewhere, the downsides and how to get around them, what a day costs, and a month-by-month verdict.

Krabi in Six Facts

It's an easy flight from Bangkok

About 18 nonstop flights a day take around 1 hour 25 minutes into Krabi International Airport. The airport bus to Ao Nang costs ฿150, and to Krabi Town ฿90–100.

November to April is the season

February is the driest month, with about 24 mm of rain on 2 days. September and October are the wettest, around 340 mm on 19 days each, and from May to October the Andaman sea is often rough for boat trips.

Railay has no road

Railay sits on a peninsula cut off by cliffs, so you reach it by longtail. From Ao Nang it's ฿100 a seat in the daytime, roughly 08:00 to 18:00, with boats leaving once about eight people are waiting, and ฿150 after dark.

It's cheaper than Phuket

A budget day runs about ฿1,300 and a mid-range day about ฿3,500, against ฿1,500 and ฿4,000 in Phuket and ฿1,600 and ฿4,500 on Koh Samui.

The islands are the point

The 4 Islands tour costs ฿750–1,000 by longtail, plus a ฿400 national park fee in cash, and the Hong Islands ฿900–1,250 plus ฿300. Phi Phi is a day trip by speedboat.

Three to five days is the right length

Three days covers Railay, one island tour and a sunset in Ao Nang. With four or five you can add Phi Phi, the Tiger Cave Temple or the Dragon Crest hike, or move on to Koh Lanta.

Who Will Love Krabi

Krabi suits travelers who want the scenery to be the trip. These are the people it works best for.

Anyone who came for the scenery

The cliffs rising out of the sea are the reason to come, and Krabi has more of them in reach than anywhere else in Thailand. Phra Nang and Railay West sit first and second in our ranking of the country's best beaches, both walled in by limestone and reached only by boat.

Island hoppers

Ao Nang is the best base on the Andaman coast for short boat days. The 4 Islands tour times its stop at the Thale Waek sandbar to low tide, the Hong Islands add a lagoon inside a ring of cliffs, and Phi Phi is close enough for a day trip. Each is a half or full day, back for dinner.

Climbers and active travelers

Railay and Tonsai have more than 700 climbing routes, and a beginner half day costs ฿1,000–1,500. On land, the Tiger Cave Temple is 1,260 steps to a golden Buddha above the jungle, Dragon Crest is a 3.7 km hike to a ledge over the coast for ฿200, and half-day kayaking through the mangroves at Ao Thalane costs ฿900–1,200.

Couples

Railay at sunset, a longtail to an empty cove and a resort on a quiet bay are what Krabi does best. Klong Muang and Tubkaek, northwest of Ao Nang, have the big resort hotels on calm stretches of sand, and Railay has the most romantic setting in the province.

Travelers on a mid-range budget

Krabi gives you Andaman scenery for less than Phuket. Krabi Town guesthouses cost ฿400–800 a night, mid-range rooms in Ao Nang ฿1,500–3,000, and the Krabi Town Walking Street on Friday to Sunday evenings serves most plates for ฿100 or less.

Who Should Skip Krabi, or Stay Somewhere Else

Krabi isn't the wrong choice for these travelers so much as the wrong default. Each has a better fit nearby.

You want a great beach outside your hotel door, cheaply

That's the one thing Krabi doesn't sell. Ao Nang's own beach is functional rather than beautiful, the beautiful beaches are at Railay, and rooms there cost ฿2,500–5,000 a night. If the beach outside the door matters most, Koh Lanta has long, calm beaches and costs less, and the Krabi vs Koh Lanta comparison goes through the choice.

You want big nights out

Krabi is quiet after dark. Ao Nang has bars and Railay has a few beach bars, but nothing like Bangla Road. For nightlife as part of the trip, stay in Phuket and take Krabi as a day trip or a few nights.

You can only travel between June and October

This is the Andaman monsoon. Boat trips are often rough or cancelled, Maya Bay on Phi Phi closes from 1 August to 30 September, and the beaches lose their color under gray skies. For a beach in these months, Koh Samui is the better bet, drier than the Andaman coast from April to September.

You want a quiet, undeveloped island

Ao Nang is a resort town, and the famous boat stops are crowded. For quiet, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Noi or Koh Lipe in the far south are slower and emptier. Lipe has the clearest water in Thailand but takes most of a day to reach.

The Honest Downsides, and How to Get Around Them

The complaints about Krabi I see repeated come down to five things, and each has a fix.

Choosing the wrong base

Krabi Town has no beach, and Ao Nang's beach is ordinary. Stay in Ao Nang for the boats and restaurants, or in Railay for the scenery, and keep Krabi Town for the night market or a cheap first night. Two nights in Railay plus a few in Ao Nang is the split I'd plan around.

The crowds on the famous stops

By mid-morning the longtails and tour groups have reached Railay, Phra Nang and the 4 Islands. The fix is time. Take the earliest boat you can, stay a night on Railay so you have the beach before the day boats arrive and after they leave, and book tours that run to the tides rather than to the crowd.

The monsoon

From May to October the sea is rough on many days, island tours get cancelled, and on stormy days even the short longtail run to Railay can stop. If you come in these months, keep the plan flexible, book tours that refund for weather, and leave the inland days, the Emerald Pool, the hot springs and the mangrove kayaking, for the wet ones.

Ao Nang feels commercial

The main road is lined with tour desks, massage shops and Western chains, which is what the bad reviews mean by no charm. For a more local evening, take the red songthaew to Krabi Town, ฿60 by day and ฿80 after 18:00, for the Walking Street and the riverside.

Getting around

Songthaews link Krabi Town and Ao Nang but run shorter hours in low season, Grab works around Ao Nang, and the airport is far enough from Ao Nang that taxi prices vary widely. Take the ฿150 airport bus or pre-book a car. Scooters cost ฿200–300 a day, but if you don't ride at home, don't learn here, and check that your insurance covers it.

Is Krabi Worth Visiting Every Month?

MonthRain (avg)Verdict
January50 mm, 4 daysExcellent. Dry, calm seas and every boat trip running
February24 mm, 2 daysThe best month. The driest of the year, with flat water for the islands
March81 mm, 6 daysExcellent. Hot and still dry, and a little quieter than January
April135 mm, 10 daysGood. Songkran on 13–15 April, with showers building late in the month
May237 mm, 16 daysMixed. The monsoon starts, prices fall and some boat days get cancelled
June249 mm, 16 daysOnly for a bargain. Rough seas on many days, so keep the plan flexible
July240 mm, 16 daysOnly for a bargain. Heavy bursts rather than all-day rain
August309 mm, 17 daysWet. Maya Bay on Phi Phi is closed for the whole month
September350 mm, 19 daysThe wettest month. Skip it if the islands are the point
October336 mm, 19 daysWet. Maya Bay reopens on 1 October, and the weather improves late in the month
November178 mm, 13 daysGood. The season turns, with drier weeks toward the end of the month
December82 mm, 8 daysExcellent, and the busiest. Book early for Christmas and New Year

Krabi has no climate station of its own, so these are the WMO 1991–2020 normals for the Phuket station, the nearest on the same Andaman coast. The sea stays at 28–30°C all year.

What a Day in Krabi Costs, Compared

DestinationBudget dayMid-range day
Krabi฿1,300฿3,500
Koh Lanta฿1,200฿3,000
Bangkok฿1,200฿3,000
Khao Lak฿1,400฿3,800
Phuket฿1,500฿4,000
Phi Phi฿1,500฿4,000
Koh Samui฿1,600฿4,500

Per person, including a room, food and local transport. Island tours, national park fees and climbing are extra, and high season adds 30–50% to hotel rates.

How Long to Stay and Where to Base Yourself

Three to five days is the right length. Three gives you a Railay day, an island tour and an evening in Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Four or five lets you add Phi Phi, the Tiger Cave Temple, Dragon Crest or a lazy day, and a week is enough to finish on Koh Lanta, two hours from Krabi's airport.

Ao Nang is the best all-round base, with the most boats, restaurants and mid-range rooms at ฿1,500–3,000 a night. Railay is the most beautiful place to stay, best for two or three nights, at ฿2,500–5,000. Klong Muang and Tubkaek are for resort stays on quiet bays, from about ฿3,000 a night. Krabi Town is the cheapest, at ฿500–1,200 for a mid-range room, but you'll be riding a songthaew to every beach. The where-to-stay guide has each area with its transfer time.

If Not Krabi, Then Where?

If something above put you off, one of these is probably the trip you're actually looking for.

Phuket, for choice and nightlife

Same coast and same season. Phuket is for resorts, nightlife and choice, Krabi for the scenery and a quieter, cheaper base for island hopping. They're two to three hours apart by boat or road, so many trips do both. The Phuket vs Krabi comparison goes through them side by side.

Koh Lanta, for a slower island

Lanta is slower and cheaper, with long beaches, calm water and easy driving, and it suits families well. See Krabi vs Koh Lanta.

Koh Samui, for the months Krabi is wet

Pick by month. Krabi is best from November to March and Koh Samui from April to September, and neither is at its best in October. See Koh Samui vs Krabi.

Koh Lipe, for the clearest water

Lipe is a car-free island where you snorkel straight from the beach. It costs more, takes most of a day to reach and half closes from May to October. See Krabi vs Koh Lipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Is Krabi Worth Visiting?.

For scenery, yes. Krabi has the limestone cliffs, Railay and Phra Nang, and it's quieter and cheaper, about ฿3,500 a mid-range day against ฿4,000. Phuket has more beaches you can stay on, far more nightlife and more flights. Pick Krabi for the views and island hopping, Phuket for choice and evenings out.

Pick by month. Krabi is better from November to March, when the Andaman coast is dry and calm, and Koh Samui from April to September, when the Gulf is drier. Neither is at its best in October.

Three to five. Three covers Railay, one island tour and an evening in Ao Nang. Four or five adds Phi Phi, the Tiger Cave Temple or Dragon Crest, and with a week you can finish on Koh Lanta.

Avoid booking Krabi Town expecting a beach, and avoid planning a trip around boat days between June and October, when the sea is rough. Skip the busiest stops at midday, and don't rent a scooter if you don't ride at home.

Yes. November is when the season turns. It still sees about 178 mm of rain on 13 days on average, and the seas calm as the month goes on. Prices are below the December peak, so late November is a good-value window.

Only if price matters more than the islands. The monsoon runs from May to October, with about 240 mm of rain on 16 days in each of those months, and island tours are often cancelled. Hotels are much cheaper, and the inland sights, the Emerald Pool, the hot springs and mangrove kayaking, work in the rain.

Yes, if you have more than a few days. Krabi is two to three hours away by boat or road and gives you Railay and a quieter base for island hopping. As a day trip it's a lot of travel, so stay at least two nights.

Yes. The real risks are the sea and the roads. Swim between the flags and never under a red flag in the monsoon months, when rip currents form on the open beaches, and skip the scooter if you're not an experienced rider.

A little. Ao Nang has a beachfront strip of bars and live music and Railay has a few beach bars, but Krabi is a quiet place after dark. For big nights out, Phuket's Bangla Road or Koh Phangan are the places.
