Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol (Wat Bang Thong)

4.7(5,418 reviews)

Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol, commonly known as Wat Bang Thong, is an active Buddhist temple complex situated along the riverside in Ao Luek, approximately one hour from Krabi town. The complex centres on a striking golden pagoda surrounded by impressive monuments and ornate structures that reflect traditional Thai Buddhist artistry. Though still under construction in parts, the scale and detail of what has already been completed make it a compelling stop, and many visitors find themselves wanting more time than they initially planned. The atmosphere here leans toward genuine worship rather than tourism, offering a contemplative setting with well-maintained gardens and spaces for quiet reflection. Visitors can observe Buddhist cultural exhibitions beneath the throne area and explore the surrounding grounds at their own pace. The site works well as a standalone excursion or as a stop along a longer route, such as the drive between Krabi and Khao Sok, and it also features as part of organised boat and temple tours departing from the coast. A small entrance fee of approximately 50 baht has been noted by some visitors, though experiences vary, particularly for those arriving as part of guided tours. The temple is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Respectful dress is required, meaning covered shoulders and knees, which can catch beach-bound travellers off guard. Carrying a light sarong or loose-fitting cover-up is a practical precaution, especially if combining the visit with coastal activities.

Visitor Reviews

This was our first stop on a marine tour, long-tail boat and bamboo raft. So, we were dressed for the beach. Being that this is a temple, we did not have the right clothing to be respectful. But, the tourguide assured us that they had wraps at the entrance of the temple that we could put on. Thank goodness foe that. Otherwise, we qiukd have missed this magnificent place of worship. It was simply awe inspiring! From the grounds to the interior, this place was truly beautiful. This is a must see and I'm so glad we didn't miss out!

Absolute amazing temple and surrounding area. About 1 hour drive from Krabi town and well worth the visit. Development still undergoing, but plenty to see already. Fantastic art details on the inside and outside. Small entrance fee for foreigners. Shoes have to be taken off at designated spot, men in shorts are ok though. Overall nice staff and not at all crowded.

The beautiful area under the throne of the king is an exhibition of Buddhist culture. The temple is still under construction, but it and its surroundings are still impressive. The entrance fee is 50BTH, they have good coffee and dessert in the large parking lot.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
