Koh Lanta in One Paragraph
Koh Lanta is a long, quiet island in the Andaman Sea, south of Krabi and Phi Phi, about 6 km wide and over 30 km long. One road runs down the west coast past a string of beaches, busy and easy in the north around Khlong Dao and Long Beach, wilder and emptier the further south you drive, down to Kantiang Bay and the national park lighthouse at the tip. It's calmer than Phuket and Phi Phi, with little nightlife beyond beach bars, which is why families and long-stayers love it.
The best days out are by boat, to the 4 Islands and the Emerald Cave or to Koh Rok's reefs. Give it five nights, pick your beach before you book, and come between November and April, because the May to October monsoon closes many places and stops most of the boats.

Key Facts
Pick your beach first, because the island is long
Khlong Dao and Long Beach in the north have the restaurants and the easiest logistics. The south, from Kantiang down, is quieter and prettier, but dinner elsewhere is a drive.
There's no Grab, so plan to rent a scooter
Scooters cost about ฿200–300 a day on a flat, easy road. A tuk-tuk from Saladan to Kantiang costs about ฿400–800.
The boat trips are the highlight, about November to April
The 4 Islands trip costs about ฿1,000 by longtail, and Koh Rok about ฿1,800 by speedboat. National park fees of ฿200–400 are extra unless included.
The national park at the southern tip costs ฿200
Mu Ko Lanta National Park opens 08:30 to 16:30, with the lighthouse and a short jungle trail. Children pay ฿100.
Two to three hours by van from Krabi airport
Vans run until 20:30 for about ฿400–540. Speedboats from Phuket run all year in about an hour and a half.
Is Koh Lanta Worth Visiting?
Yes, if you want beaches without the crowds and the noise. Lanta's west coast is one long run of sand and coves, the water on the main beaches is calm and shallow in season, and the island never feels packed the way Phi Phi or Patong do. It's one of the best islands in Thailand for families, and plenty of people come for a week and stay a month.
It's not the place for nightlife or for famous viewpoints. The bars are beach bars, the evenings are quiet, and the best scenery is offshore, so you'll want a boat trip or two. The island is also big enough that you need a scooter or a driver to explore it.
Krabi or Koh Lanta? Krabi, meaning Ao Nang and Railay, for the limestone cliffs and the island-hopping on your doorstep. Lanta for longer, quieter beaches and a slower pace. They're two to three hours apart by van, so many trips do both. My full answer, with the comparisons, is in Is Koh Lanta Worth Visiting?
Koh Lanta's Beaches, North to South
The west coast in the order you'll drive it from the ferry. Everything gets quieter as you go south.
1. Khlong Dao, North, 2 km from Saladan
FamiliesAbout 3 km of fine sand with shallow, gentle water, close to Saladan's shops and the pier. It's the easiest beach on the island for small children.
2. Long Beach (Phra Ae), North-central
Restaurants and a bit of nightlifeA curve of about 4 km, the island's busiest beach, with the most restaurants and the few bars that stay open late. Still calm by Thai island standards.
3. Khlong Khong, Central
Beach bars and sunsetsRocks and reef at the waterline make swimming awkward at low tide, but the sunsets and the laid-back beach bars make up for it. The backpacker end of the island.
4. Kantiang Bay, South
The prettiest bayAbout 1 km of sand backed by jungle hills, with only a few hotels and a small village. The bay many people rate the island's most beautiful.
5. Bamboo Bay, Far south, by the national park
Getting away from everyoneThe southernmost beach before the national park, small and quiet, and the end of the road for most people.
The Best Things to Do on Koh Lanta
Ordered by how much I'd prioritize them on a first visit of five nights.
1. The 4 Islands trip and the Emerald Cave, The Trang islands, south of Lanta
The best day outA full day by boat to four islands off the Trang coast. The highlight is the Emerald Cave on Koh Mook, an 80 m swim through a dark sea cave into a hidden lagoon, followed by lunch on Koh Ngai's beach and snorkeling at Koh Chueak and Koh Kradan.
Longtail trips cost about ฿1,000 and take seven to eight hours, and the national park fee is ฿200 for adults and ฿100 for children.

- When to go

2. Koh Rok and Koh Haa, About an hour south by speedboat

- When to go
- Late afternoon and dinner.

6. Diving at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, Offshore, south of Koh Rok
Experienced diversTwo deep pinnacles known for mantas and the odd whale shark, best from about February to April by operators' accounts, and for advanced divers. Two dives cost about ฿4,240–4,700, and Koh Haa, the easier site, about ฿3,240–3,600, plus a ฿600 park fee per diving day.
- Getting there
- Dive shops in Saladan and on Long Beach.

The 4 Islands Trip From Koh Lanta
If you only take one boat trip, take this one. The Emerald Cave is the reason, a swim through a pitch-dark tunnel with a headlamp that opens into a lagoon ringed by cliffs, and the rest of the day is snorkeling and a beach lunch on Koh Ngai. Book a day or two ahead in the high season, and choose a longtail for the cheaper, slower ride.
How Many Days Do You Need on Koh Lanta?
Five nights suits most people. That gives you a day for the 4 Islands, a day for Koh Rok in season, a day on the scooter down to Kantiang and the national park with the Old Town on the way back, and two days on the beach.
Three nights is the minimum to make the trip from Krabi or Phuket worth it. Lanta also suits long stays, and plenty of families come for two weeks or more in the winter.
Where to Stay on Koh Lanta

Getting to Koh Lanta
From Krabi, take a van. They run from Krabi airport until 20:30 for about ฿400–540 and from Krabi Town and Ao Nang through the day, taking two to three hours including a short car ferry from the mainland to Lanta Noi and the bridge onto Lanta itself. Queues for the car ferry can run to hours in the high season. A bridge to the mainland is due around 2029.
From Phuket, speedboats from Rassada pier take about an hour and a half for ฿1,260–1,700 and run all year, and slower ferries via Phi Phi run from November to April. From Phi Phi, Bundhaya's speedboat takes 30 minutes for ฿700 all year. Most boats land at Saladan pier in the north.

Getting Around Koh Lanta
A scooter is the way to get around. They cost about ฿200–300 a day, and Lanta's main west-coast road is flat and easy by island standards.
Otherwise, tuk-tuks with sidecars wait in Saladan and along the beaches, but they're not cheap, about ฿400–800 from Saladan to Kantiang. Grab barely operates on the island, so ask your hotel to call a driver.
When to Go
November to April is the season. February is the driest month, with about 24 mm of rain at the Phuket weather station, the sea is calm and clear, and all the boat trips run. December and January are the busiest and priciest.
May to October is the monsoon. September and October are the wettest months, with about 350 mm each, the west-coast surf brings strong currents, many beach bungalows, bars and dive shops close, and the trips to Koh Rok and most of the islands stop. The vans and the Phuket speedboats keep running, the resorts that stay open discount heavily, and it suits people who want an empty island more than a beach holiday.
Plan the rest of the trip.
