Is Thailand Good for Scuba Diving?
Yes, and it's two diving countries in one. The Gulf coast, Koh Tao above all, is one of the world's busiest places to learn, where an Open Water course costs about ฿11,000–12,500, conditions are forgiving, and the training sites are minutes from shore. The Andaman coast is the destination side, with the Similan Islands' granite boulders, the deep-south pinnacles of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, and Richelieu Rock, the whale-shark pinnacle in the Surin park, reached by liveaboard or a long day boat from Khao Lak.
The two coasts run on opposite seasons, so somewhere in Thailand is diving well in every month. The water sits around 29°C (84°F) all year. Whale sharks are a real possibility
No dive shop can promise one. The best odds are Sail Rock and Chumphon Pinnacle in the Gulf, where most reports fall between about February and September, and Richelieu Rock from about February to April.
The admin that matters
Your travel insurance must say it covers scuba to your certification depth, as many base policies exclude it. Leave 18–24 hours between your last dive and flying. Park fees are often paid on the day, so ask whether a price includes them.

Where to Dive, Coast by Coast
Every Thai dive region has a personality. Match the trip to it and the country over-delivers.
Koh Tao, where the world learns to dive
One small Gulf island is among the world's busiest places to learn to dive, and the machine works, with calm bays, shallow training sites like Japanese Gardens and Twins, more than 25 dive sites and schools competing hard on quality. An Open Water course costs about ฿11,000–12,500, often with a bed thrown in. Choose your school by personality. Big Blue and Ban's for the full social-resort experience, Crystal Dive for the polished Mae Haad all-rounder, Master Divers for small groups and senior instructors, Roctopus for the high-energy professional outfit, and New Heaven in Chalok for the island's marine-conservation program. Khao Lak and the Similans, Thailand's best diving
The quiet beach town of Khao Lak is the gateway to the Similan and Surin parks, with granite boulder gardens, white-sand channels and Richelieu Rock, the horseshoe pinnacle that makes world-top-ten lists for its density of life. Both parks open from 15 October to 15 May. A two-dive Similan day from Khao Lak costs about ฿6,300 with the ฿700 diver's park fee and gear, and a Richelieu Rock day boat about ฿5,200–7,800 plus the same fee, on set days of the week. The liveaboard is the format that does it justice, with the first boat at every site and dawn and dusk dives. Khao Lak Explorer is the town's top-rated modern operation for liveaboards and long-range day trips, Sea Dragon has run these waters since the 1990s, and Wicked Diving is the small-group responsible-travel choice. Corals here were hit by the 2024 bleaching across the Andaman, and many have reportedly recovered. Khao Lak is 80 to 100 minutes north of Phuket airport by car.
Phuket and Phi Phi, day-trip diving with everything else attached
Phuket is the day-trip hub, with morning boats to Racha Yai and Racha Noi, Shark Point's leopard sharks, Anemone Reef and the King Cruiser wreck, and operators like Aussie Divers running three-dive days. It suits divers whose travel companions don't dive, because you're back for dinner. Phi Phi has its own excellent circuit, the Bida islets' walls with turtles and blacktips, a dense cluster of well-rated shops (DPM, The Adventure Club, Princess Divers) and two-dive days for about ฿2,500–3,500, with fewer boat hours than from Phuket.
Koh Lanta and the deep south, the big-animal pinnacles
Lanta's dive shops (Phoenix, Blue Planet, Lanta Diver among a strong field) exist largely because of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, the deep-south pinnacles whose purple soft-coral walls and open-water exposure give Thailand's best manta odds outside the Similans. Two dives there cost about ฿4,240–4,700, and Koh Haa's lagoons and caverns, the easier site, about ฿3,240–3,600, plus a ฿600 park fee per diving day. Further south, Koh Lipe dives the reefs and pinnacles of its national park, from Stonehenge's boulders to the deeper Eight Mile Rock, for about ฿3,000 for two dives plus a ฿200 park fee, with small operators like Pura Vida and Adang Sea Divers. It's Thailand's least-crowded quality diving, and if you've got the days, I'd go.
The Gulf islands and the east, Samui, Phangan, Koh Chang and Pattaya
Samui and Phangan share Sail Rock, the Gulf's best site, a pinnacle with a vertical chimney you swim up from 18 m to 8 m, run daily by Sail Rock Divers from Phangan and by Samui's shops like Silent Divers. Diving here bolts neatly onto island vacations that were never dive trips. On the east coast, Koh Chang has the country's biggest wreck dive, the HTMS Chang, a former landing ship about 100 m long scuttled in 2012, plus easy island reefs. And Pattaya, two hours from Bangkok, is the closest diving to the capital, with the HTMS Khram and HTMS Khut wrecks at about 30 m off its islands and the Hardeep, bombed in 1945, off Samae San. The wrecks need Advanced certification, so for most people Pattaya is a weekend of wreck dives rather than a place to learn.

Never Dived? Start with a Try Dive
If you're not sure diving is for you, a try dive (PADI calls it Discover Scuba Diving) is a single day with an instructor, down to a maximum of 12 m, with no certification at the end. On Koh Tao the day includes the gear and an instructor, and a second dive is about ฿1,000 more. On Phi Phi the Discover Scuba afternoon at DPM or The Adventure Club is a pool session and a shallow reef dive at Bida Nok or Shark Point, with leopard sharks and turtles more often than not.
If the try dive goes well, the Open Water course is the next step, and Koh Tao is the cheapest place to take it. If it doesn't, snorkeling gets you most of the color. Koh Tao's bays, Koh Nang Yuan and the Similans are all excellent from the surface.
Learning to Dive, and How the Course Actually Works
The Open Water certification (PADI or SSI, functionally interchangeable in Thailand) takes three and a half to four days. Theory, much of it doable online before you fly, then confined-water skills in a pool or calm bay, then four open-water dives to 18 meters. Koh Tao's price includes what matters, with small groups, all gear and often basic accommodation. Ban's Diving Resort charges ฿11,000 for its PADI course with a discounted room, and Crystal Dive ฿12,500 for SSI with four nights included. The add-ons worth paying for are a private instructor if you're nervous and the Advanced course (about ฿10,000–12,000 on Koh Tao, two more days, five dives, a 30-meter limit) if you're continuing to the Andaman's deeper sites and the wrecks. Book schools with named instructors and capped groups over the absolute cheapest. The difference is ฿1,000 and the whole quality of your foundation. One health note. Diving is off the table with a cold you can't equalize through, and your instructor would rather reschedule than push you.
Already certified but rusty? Every region runs refresher dives. Take one after a multi-year gap rather than bluffing, because the crew will know by the second minute anyway.

Water, Visibility and the Rules in the Parks
The water is about 29°C (84°F) all year, according to PADI. Visibility is the clearest in the Similans, best from December to March. In the Gulf it swings with the weather, from 5–30 m at Chumphon Pinnacle and 15–35 m at Sail Rock, and it drops in the October to December monsoon.
Sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC or butylparaben are banned in Thailand's marine parks, with fines of up to ฿100,000, so check the label or wear a rash guard. No one can sleep on the Similan Islands, so a liveaboard anchored offshore is the only way to spend the night there.
