Things to Do in Phuket
Turquoise waters, jungle-clad cliffs, and Thailand's liveliest beach towns
Phuket Beyond the Beach
Phuket is Thailand's most visited destination — and for good reason. The island offers the full package: postcard-perfect beaches on the west coast, dramatic limestone islands a short speedboat away, a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene in Patong, and a charming Sino-Portuguese Old Town that most visitors miss entirely. Whether you want lazy beach days, adventure activities, or a deep dive into Thai culture, Phuket delivers.

Getting Around Phuket
Grab App
The only reliable metered option on Phuket, where taxis are notoriously overpriced. Download Grab before you land — it's cheaper than any tuk-tuk for distances over 3 km.
Scooter Rental
฿200–350 per day. The most flexible way to explore the island, reach quieter beaches, and visit the Old Town at your own pace. Traffic in Patong is heavy — ride cautiously.
Local Tuk-Tuks & Taxis
Available everywhere but almost always overcharge tourists. Always negotiate or use Grab instead. A Patong–Airport trip by metered taxi should be ฿400–500; tuk-tuks will quote ฿800–1,000.
Smart Bus
Phuket's air-conditioned bus service runs a route from the airport through Patong to Rawai, costing just ฿170. Slow but very cheap and air-conditioned — ideal if you're not in a hurry.
Phuket Airport (HKT) → Patong, Kata, Karon, Old Town
Book a Phuket airport transfer in advance
Phuket airport taxis run a fixed-price counter that's roughly double what locals pay, and rideshare apps are restricted near arrivals. A pre-booked Kiwitaxi transfer to Patong, Kata, or Karon is usually ฿900–1,400 with code THAILAND5 — cheaper than the airport counter and the driver meets you in the terminal.

Best Time to Visit Phuket
Phuket sits on Thailand's Andaman coast, so its weather follows the southwest monsoon pattern. The dry season runs from November to April — this is when you'll get clear blue skies, calm seas, and the best conditions for beach days, island-hopping, and diving. January and February are the driest months, but also the most crowded and expensive.
The monsoon season (May to October) brings afternoon downpours and rougher seas, particularly on the west coast. Some beach clubs and smaller boat operators close from June to September. However, the east coast and Phuket Town remain perfectly enjoyable, prices drop by 30–50%, and the island is far less crowded. October is the wettest month — avoid it if you want guaranteed sunshine.
The sweet spots are November (rains ending, prices still moderate, fewer crowds) and March–April (still dry but crowds are thinning). If you're on a budget, May–June offers the best value with only occasional rain and many businesses still operating.
Peak season tip: Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead for December–February. Beachfront hotels in Kata and Karon sell out fastest.
Best Beaches in Phuket
Phuket's west coast is lined with beaches, each with a distinct character. Patong Beach is the busiest — wide sand, plenty of water sports, and Bangla Road nightlife steps away. It's not the prettiest but has the most infrastructure. Kata Beach, 20 minutes south, strikes the best balance: clean sand, good surf, family-friendly restaurants, and far less noise than Patong.
For quieter stretches, head to Nai Harn in the far south (locals' favourite, great for swimming November–April), Surin Beach on the northwest coast (upmarket, excellent dining), or Freedom Beach (reachable only by longtail boat, genuinely stunning). Families should consider Kata Noi or Bang Tao — calm, shallow water with good resort access.
The east coast around Cape Panwa and Ao Yon is mangrove-fringed rather than resort-lined, but offers calm water year-round and the real Phuket atmosphere most visitors miss entirely. Old Town Phuket is also just 15 minutes from here — combine a morning beach visit with an afternoon of Sino-Portuguese architecture and café culture.
Best Day Trips from Phuket
Phi Phi Islands are the most popular day trip — a 90-minute speedboat ride to Maya Bay (now visitor-capped to protect the reef) and Pileh Lagoon. Book an early-departure tour to beat the crowds. James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay is the other classic, best done as a sea-kayaking trip through the hongs (collapsed cave lagoons) rather than a standard boat tour.
The Similan Islands (open mid-October to mid-May) offer Thailand's best snorkelling and diving — crystal-clear water, manta rays, and barely any development. Full-day trips depart from Khao Lak or Phuket's marinas; liveaboard dive trips are the premium option. Closer to home, Coral Island (Koh Hae) and Racha Island provide excellent snorkelling within 30 minutes of Phuket's south coast.
Beyond islands, consider a half-day trip to Old Town Phuket for street art, Sino-Portuguese shophouses, and some of the island's best local food. The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary in the northeast offers ethical half-day encounters. And the Big Buddha viewpoint at Nakkerd Hill is free and gives panoramic views over the entire southern coastline.
