Pick Phuket if…
- You want big-resort comfort, an international airport and Bangla Road after dark
- Old Town, the Big Buddha and Phang Nga Bay are on the list
- You're a mixed group that wants options every night
Pick Krabi if…
- The karst cliffs, Railay and the Four Islands are the point of the trip
- You'd rather climb, kayak and boat-hop than sit by a pool
- Budget matters: Krabi runs a few hundred baht a day cheaper and feels less commercial
Why I'd choose that way
Phuket and Krabi face each other across Phang Nga Bay, share the November to April dry season and the June to September rough seas, and are about three hours apart by road. The choice is about texture, not weather.
Phuket is the full-service option: 36 beaches, a proper Old Town with Sino-Portuguese shophouses, direct international flights, and the biggest nightlife on the coast. It's busy and polished, and prices reflect that.
Krabi is defined by limestone. Railay's boat-only beaches sit under 300-meter rock walls with 700-plus climbing routes, the Four Islands tour and the Hong lagoon are among the best day trips in Thailand, and Ao Nang works as an easy base. Krabi Town's weekend night market and Tiger Cave Temple's 1,237 steps round it out. There's less to do at night, which for many people is the point.

Doing both is easy and common. Hourly buses and vans take about three hours; the morning ferry from Phuket calls at Railay, which is the prettier way to arrive.

Phuket or Krabi: the questions people ask
Is Krabi cheaper than Phuket?
A little: about ฿1,300 a day on a budget against ฿1,500, and ฿3,500 against ฿4,000 mid-range. Railay is the exception; boat-access beaches carry a premium.
Which has better beaches, Phuket or Krabi?
Krabi's are more dramatic (Railay, Phra Nang Cave Beach), Phuket's are more numerous and easier to reach. If you want to walk out of a hotel onto a long sandy beach with everything nearby, Phuket. If you want a beach you'll photograph for years, Krabi.
Can I do Phuket and Krabi in one week?
Yes. Three nights in Phuket, then the ferry or a van to Krabi for four, works well. Both are gateways to Phi Phi, so put the day trip in whichever half suits your dates.
Which is better for nightlife?
Phuket by a distance. Bangla Road in Patong is the biggest strip in the south; Krabi's nightlife is a few bars in Ao Nang and the weekend market in town.
