Bangkok to Krabi

Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion and Nok Air fly from Don Mueang (DMK); Thai Airways, Thai Vietjet, Bangkok Airways and AirAsia again from Suvarnabhumi (BKK). With this much competition, fares behave. Book around six weeks out and ฿900–2,000 one way is normal, with lows in the ฿700s on promo days. Peak weeks (mid-December to January, Songkran) still sell out the cheap seats first, and Krabi is one of the routes where early booking pays most. Which airport is the real decision: Don Mueang has the cheapest fares and the budget carriers, Suvarnabhumi the full-service ones and the Airport Rail Link, so pick by where you are sleeping in Bangkok rather than by a ฿200 difference in fare.

Krabi's airport sits 12 km northeast of Krabi Town, about 40 minutes from Ao Nang, and your transfer options span a tenfold price range for the same road. The airport shuttle bus meets most flights and runs ฿150 to Ao Nang (about ฿90–100 to Krabi Town); shared vans charge ฿150–200 per person with hotel drop-off. The prepaid taxi counter quotes ฿700–1,000 per car to Ao Nang. Grab works from the airport at roughly ฿600–900, though drivers sometimes ask you to walk to the parking lot at busy times. Solo or in a pair, take the shuttle. Three people with bags, and the math starts favoring a car.

Buses leave Bangkok's Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai, on Borommaratchachonnani Road across the river in Thonburi, so allow 30–45 minutes to reach it) in the early evening and arrive at Krabi's bus station at dawn. Lignite Tour is the name brand on the route, and its own timetable has the 18:40 arriving 05:40, eleven hours, at ฿715, bookable on its site and paid at a 7-Eleven if you prefer. 12Go lists four express departures between 17:30 and 19:00 plus a VIP 24-seater at 18:50, at ฿740–1,140 with its fee; the government Transport Co. also runs the route from the same terminal. That dawn arrival is genuinely useful, because it puts you at the pier in time for the morning boats to Phi Phi or Railay.

The VIP 24 is the one to pay extra for, with near-flat recline, a blanket, water and soy milk handed out at boarding, charging at the seat, and a buffet dinner at the meal stop that is included in the fare, with a twenty-minute rest stop in the small hours. Walk-up at the counter it was ฿834 in March 2024, and the bus got in at 06:20. Two practical notes. Krabi's terminal is at Talat Kao, 4–5 km north of Krabi Town, so a white songthaew (about ฿50) or a short Grab finishes the trip to town or Ao Nang. And book the terminal operators rather than the cheap tourist buses sold around Khao San Road, which have a long reputation for slow runs and luggage that arrives lighter than it left.

If you are choosing which airport to fly into, fly to the one you are sleeping nearest. Krabi's airport is 40 minutes from Ao Nang and the Railay longtails; Phuket's is on the far side of a 50-km island and two to three hours from Krabi by road and ferry. Phuket has more flights and sometimes a cheaper fare, but the saving disappears in the transfer. Nobody breaks the flight, but the overland routes pass two places worth a night. Hua Hin is three to four hours down the line from Bangkok and the natural first stop on the train or the road, with the beach town's night market for dinner. Further south, the Surat Thani change is about two hours from Khao Sok National Park's limestone lake, a detour that turns a 15-hour transit into a two-day trip and is the best argument for taking the train at all.

The return runs the same three ways in reverse, and the timings are friendlier. Flights leave Krabi for both Bangkok airports through the day, which makes a morning on the beach and an evening in Bangkok a realistic plan. The night buses leave Krabi's Talat Kao terminal between 16:00 and 17:30. Lignite Tour's own page lists a 16:00 at ฿779, a 16:30 at ฿796 and a 17:00 VIP 24 at ฿1,170, and Transport Co. runs from about ฿707. Most land at the Southern Terminal early the next morning, a Grab ride from most of the city, and some go on to Mo Chit. Allow 12 to 14 hours northbound.

The train route back means a van from Krabi to Phun Phin station (check it goes to the station, not Surat Thani town) for one of the evening sleepers north; the same lower-berth rule applies, and buying the two legs as one ticket matters more in this direction, because a late van means a missed train.
