The best things to do in Krabi are the Railay peninsula (15 minutes by longtail from Ao Nang for ฿100, no road in), the Four Islands tour with its low-tide sandbar walk (฿750–1,200 plus the ฿200 park fee), the 1,260-step climb to the Tiger Cave Temple viewpoint, and the Hong Islands' enclosed lagoon. This is the province where the boat matters more than the road, and where the budget goes on boat days, since almost everything on land costs ฿200 or less.

Day-trip boats dump crowds on Phra Nang from mid-morning. The temple staircase is brutal in midday heat, and the Dragon Crest trailhead stops admitting hikers at 14:00 because the round trip takes up to four hours.
A scooter is ฿200–300/day, a songthaew ฿50–80, and Grab works
Ao Nang is the base with the restaurants, and Krabi Town is 25–30 minutes by songthaew. A scooter covers the Tiger Cave Temple, Dragon Crest trailhead and the town. If you're staying on Railay, I'd skip wheels entirely. There's nothing to drive on.
KBV airport is 30–40 min from Ao Nang, and from Phuket a speedboat takes 1–2 h

1. Railay and Phra Nang by longtail, ฿100 each way
Krabi's headline act is a peninsula, not an island. Cliffs cut it off from the mainland, so the only way in is the 15-minute longtail from Ao Nang (฿100 per person by day and about ฿150 in the evening, with shared boats roughly 08:00 to 18:00 and a private charter after the last one). Railay West is the postcard, white sand walled in by 100-meter limestone. A five-minute path crosses to Railay East, where the bars and cheap beds are. The real prize is ten minutes further at Phra Nang Beach, a strip of sand under a vast overhanging cliff with the Princess Cave shrine at its base. Get there before 10:00, because from mid-morning every Four Islands boat in the province stops here. Stay past the last crowds for sunset from Railay West and take a late boat back. The whole day costs ฿200 in transport.
2. The Four Islands tour, ฿750–1,200 + ฿200 park fee
The classic Krabi boat day is Ko Poda's squeaky white sand, Chicken Island's rock-stack profile, snorkeling in between, and the trick that makes the tour. At low tide a sandbar rises out of the sea and connects Ko Tup to its neighbors, so you walk between islands ankle-deep in the Andaman. Thais call it Thale Waek, the Separated Sea. Wat Tham Suea is Krabi's most-reviewed sight for one reason, the staircase. 1,260 steps climb 270 vertical meters to a golden Buddha and a genuine 360-degree panorama, karst towers to the coast one way, the Phanom Bencha range the other. Recent visitors report a ฿50 cash charge for foreign visitors at the entrance, and there's a drinking-water tap at the top. It opens before dawn and is honest about being hard. Allow 40–60 minutes up with the heat as the main enemy, which is why 07:00 or the last two hours before the 18:00 close are the times to do it. Keep food zipped away, the macaques on the lower flights are professional thieves, and cover shoulders and knees. It's a working monastery, not a viewpoint with a shrine attached.
4. The Hong Islands lagoon, ฿1,200–1,400 + ฿300 park fee
Half the crowds of the Four Islands and, for many people, the better day. Koh Hong's set piece is its lagoon, a hidden bowl of jade water inside the island's cliff walls, entered by boat through a slot barely wider than the longtail. There's also a 360-degree viewpoint platform reached by a steep staircase, worth every step. Half-day beginner courses (฿1,000–1,500, gear included) put complete novices on real limestone with a top-rope by mid-morning, and the schools on Railay East run them daily in season. The best viewpoint in Krabi you have to earn. The trail climbs 3.7 km through jungle to a bare rock ledge jutting over the forest 500 meters up, with the Andaman and its karst islands laid out below. It's the photo everyone hesitates to stand for. Count on 3–4 hours round trip, sweaty and steep in places but a trail, not a scramble. Entry is ฿200 cash at the checkpoint near Tubkaek Beach, the gate opens at 08:00, and rangers stop admitting hikers at 14:00 so nobody descends in the dark. Go at opening, so you climb in the coolest air of the day and have the ledge to yourself.
7. Kayaking the Ao Thalane mangroves, ฿900–1,200 half-day
Twenty minutes north of Ao Nang, Ao Thalane is a drowned karst landscape of mangrove channels and canyon walls that you paddle rather than ride, sheltered, flat water where the loudest sound is a kingfisher, with crab-eating macaques working the roots at low tide. Half-day guided trips with hotel pickup run ฿900–1,200 and suit total beginners. The tandem kayaks are stable and the guides set an unhurried pace. It's the anti-boat-tour, with no speedboat convoy, no schedule around a tide table, and in monsoon season it's the trip that almost never cancels, because the mangroves don't care about swell.
8. A Phi Phi day trip, ฿1,300–1,600 + ฿400 park fee
Phi Phi is 45 minutes by speedboat from Krabi's piers, and the day-trip circuit (Maya Bay, the Pi Leh lagoon's walls of jade, Monkey Beach, snorkeling off Bamboo Island) is genuinely spectacular. It just shares itself with every other boat on the Andaman. Two rules make it work. Book the earliest departure, because the gap between the 07:00 boats and the 09:00 wave is the difference between Maya Bay with dozens and with thousands. And know the calendar, because Maya Bay closes completely from 1 August to 30 September every year for reef recovery. In those months tours still run the rest of the circuit, but if Maya Bay is the point, time your trip around it or stay a night on Phi Phi and do it at dawn from the island instead.
9. The Emerald Pool and hot springs, ฿400 + ฿200
An hour inland, Krabi trades saltwater for spring water. The Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) is a naturally green swimming hole in old-growth forest, reached by an 800 m path from the parking lot or a 1.4 km boardwalk loop through the trees, with the Blue Pool, look but don't swim, about 400 m beyond it. It's ฿400 foreign-adult entry, busiest midday when the tour vans arrive, glassy and quiet before 10:00. Twenty minutes away, the Khlong Thom hot springs spill over travertine tiers into river pools at bath temperature, ฿200 entry and a short walk in. 10. Krabi Town's weekend Walking Street, free, Friday–Sunday from 17:00
Half an hour and a ฿60 songthaew from Ao Nang, Krabi Town is where the province actually lives, and its weekend Walking Street (Friday to Sunday, about 17:00–22:00, off Maharaj Road) is the best cheap dinner in Krabi, with southern curries, grilled river prawns, coconut pancakes, a stage of schoolkid performances, and almost no menu over ฿100. The Poo Dam market on Utarakit Road, by the river, covers the other four evenings. Come before sunset and walk the river first. The twin karst humps of Khao Khanab Nam rising out of the water are the town's emblem, and the giant black mud-crab statue is its most cheerfully odd photo stop.

11. The cliff walk to Pai Plong Beach, free
Pai Plong is the cove immediately west of Ao Nang and startlingly quiet for it. A concrete walkway climbs the cliff from the western end of Ao Nang beach, past a small shrine and through the trees, and takes about ten minutes. A longtail takes five. A resort occupies the headland, but the beach is public, and with almost nobody walking back after dark it's the most private sunset within reach of Ao Nang's restaurants.
12. Sunrise at Din Daeng Doi, ฿50–100
A hilltop viewpoint in Nong Thale, 20 to 30 minutes by car from Ao Nang, looking out over Krabi's limestone peaks. The gates open at 05:30, so leave Ao Nang about 05:00 for a sunrise around 06:00–06:30, and carry a flashlight for the 10- to 15-minute walk up from the parking area. A small café at the top sells drinks and roti.

Naturally salty water at 40–45°C fills a set of pools ringed by mangrove, divided up family-style, and you bathe fully clothed. It feels like a well-kept community bathing spot rather than a spa, with shower rooms and massage on site. It's open 05:00–20:00 and the early slot is the smart one before the heat builds. You'll want your own transport or a tour, and it pairs with the Emerald Pool at entry 9.

A jungle-covered national park in the hills of Mueang Krabi district, with easy paths to a swimmable waterfall basin, a small temple and a demanding circular hike for the fit. It's cooler and far quieter than the coast. On the hard trail, leech socks and proper boots aren't optional, and the paths stay slippery all year.

The Seven Islands sunset tours sail out of Ao Nang in the afternoon with a swim stop and come back after sunset. The big food market opposite Nopparat Thara Beach, about 2 km up the beach road from the middle of Ao Nang. Most Thai dishes cost ฿70–100, a plate of skewers about ฿100, and there's live music nightly and fire shows on weekends. Go after 18:00, when everything is cooking, treat it as dinner rather than shopping, and bring small notes.

A working temple in the town's Pak Nam district, with ornate traditional architecture and an everyday calm well away from the beach resorts. Google lists it open weekdays 08:00–16:30, so plan it into a weekday in town, and pair it with the Walking Street at entry 10 on a Friday.

The twin karst towers rising out of the river are Krabi Town's emblem, and a longtail from the town's pier takes you to them, caves and all, for pocket change. It's the easy add-on to an afternoon in town before the Walking Street.

Krabi's nights are low-key by Thai-coast standards, and better for it. Ao Nang's beachfront strip runs from beach-club loungers at Bamboo Beach Club to the long-running Boogie Bar's live sets, with the Landmark night market a short ride up the beach road for post-drink skewers. On Railay, the evening is the Walking Street on the east side, fire shows, reggae bars and climbers comparing scars. Krabi Town does the local version, with the weekend Walking Street, the riverside night market, and a handful of genuinely good cocktail bars hidden in the shophouse blocks.
The after-dark trip worth booking is a bioluminescent plankton tour, either night kayaking or a boat-and-swim off Ao Nang or Ao Thalane on dark-moon nights, when every paddle stroke glows. Operators schedule around the lunar calendar, so my advice is to check dates before you build an evening around it.

The Four Islands tour by speedboat (short hops, shallow snorkeling, and the sandbar walk is pure magic for children), the Emerald Pool's easy boardwalk, a no-riding elephant morning at Following Giants (฿2,750 adult / ฿1,750 child), and Ao Nang's beachfront for easy dinners. I'd skip Dragon Crest and the temple stairs until they're teenagers.
For couples
A sunset cruise out of Ao Nang with a swim stop, dinner on the sand at Klong Muang or Tubkaek (the quiet luxury beaches), and a night on Railay after the day-trippers leave, when the peninsula reverts to the handful of people sleeping on it. Phra Nang at 08:00 is as close to a private world-class beach as Thailand gets.

Dinner at Khaothong Hill, a clifftop restaurant with a karst panorama locals drive out for. The twin Khao Khanab Nam karsts by longtail from Krabi Town's pier, caves and all. Monsoon days (May–October)
The mangroves still paddle, the hot springs and Emerald Pool are at their fullest, and the climbing walls on Railay East stay dry under their overhangs in all but the heaviest rain. Island tours cancel in rough swell, so book them for your first clear morning, not your last day, and you'll have room to reshuffle.

Watch the sunset from Railay West or a sunset cruise with a swim stop, eat on the sand at Klong Muang or Tubkaek, then take cocktails along Ao Nang's beachfront or the live sets at Boogie Bar. Railay's east-side Walking Street does fire shows and reggae bars, and Krabi Town's weekend Walking Street is the local evening. There's no big club scene, and for most couples that's the point.
By boat, the Four Islands, the Hong Islands lagoon and Phi Phi, with Phang Nga Bay as the sheltered option when the swell is up. By road, the Emerald Pool and the hot springs make an inland half day, and Khao Sok is about two hours away, though it deserves two nights. Very. The realistic risks are sunburn, monsoon rip currents at red-flag beaches, and scooters, the usual Thailand trio. On boat days, wear the life jacket, keep valuables in a dry bag, and use the licensed boats from the marked lines at Ao Nang rather than freelance touts.
