James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan)
The limestone spire from the 1974 Bond film, seen from Khao Phing Kan's beach on a Phang Nga Bay boat tour. ฿300 park fee, and go early or late to miss the crowd.
How to visit James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan)
Khao Phing Kan sits out in Phang Nga Bay, and you reach it by boat, which for most visitors means a day trip from Phuket. Pick one with sea canoeing, which is the better way to see the bay.
What to know
The landing is covered by the ฿300 national park fee. Twenty minutes is enough for the photograph of Koh Tapu, the needle of rock from The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and the walk to the leaning-rock cleft behind the beach. It isn't a swimming stop, and the stalls are the most expensive in the bay, so buy water on the boat.

James Bond Island in a Phang Nga Bay day
- Khao Phing Kan
- The island the boats land on, two limestone hills leaning into each other with a small beach between them, souvenir stalls and caves you can walk into at low tide.
- Ko Tapu
- The spire from The Man with the Golden Gun, about 20 m tall and 40 m offshore. Boats have been kept away from it since 1998, so you photograph it from the beach.
- Koh Panak and Koh Hong
- The sea-canoe stops, where you paddle through caves into hongs, the lagoons hidden inside the islands.
- Koh Panyee
- The Muslim fishing village on stilts where most tours stop for lunch.
- Park fee · ฿300
- Ao Phang Nga National Park charges foreign adults ฿300 and children ฿150, in cash, if your tour doesn't include it.
Getting there and around
- From Phuket, group day tours cost about ฿1,500–2,800 with hotel pickup. They leave from east-coast piers such as Ao Po, about 45 minutes by road from Patong, and have you back around 16:30.
- From Phang Nga town, a songthaew runs about 5 km south to the park headquarters and pier at Tha Dan, where longtail captains take small groups around the bay for a price agreed on the spot. Buses from Phuket to Phang Nga town take 1.5 to 2 hours and cost about ฿80–100.
- From Krabi, the tour agencies in Ao Nang sell James Bond Island day trips too.

Why go, and how to do it well
James Bond Island is really two rocks. Boats land on Khao Phing Kan, a pair of small limestone islands that lean into each other, which is what the Thai name means, and the spire in every photo is Ko Tapu, about 20 m tall and 40 m off the beach. Together they played the villain's hideout in The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974, and the name stuck. Boats have been kept away from Ko Tapu since 1998 to protect its eroding base, so you look at it from the shore.
Is it worth it? On its own, barely. You get 20 to 40 minutes on a small beach lined with souvenir stalls, plus a cave or two you can walk into at low tide, and at midday it's shoulder to shoulder. But nobody goes for the island alone. It's one stop on a Phang Nga Bay day tour, and paddling a sea canoe through the caves into the hidden lagoons at Koh Panak and Koh Hong, then lunch at the stilt village of Koh Panyee, are what make the day. Book a tour with canoeing.
Group tours from Phuket cost about ฿1,500 to ฿2,800 with hotel pickup, leave from east-coast piers like Ao Po and have you back around 16:30. Agencies in Ao Nang sell the same day from Krabi, and longtail captains work the bay from Phang Nga town. On top of the tour, Ao Phang Nga National Park charges foreign adults ฿300 and children ฿150, in cash. Many tours include it, so check what your price covers.
To beat the crowd, change the hour. An early private longtail from Tha Dan pier, about 5 km south of Phang Nga town, reaches the island before the Phuket boats, and a late-departure speedboat from Phuket, about ฿2,700, arrives as they leave. November to April has the calmest water and December to February is the busiest stretch. The tours keep running through the rainy season because the bay is sheltered on three sides.

Reviews from Google
Khao Phing Kan was one of the four stops during this wonderful boat tour. The James Bond Island was amazing. At two other stops, we canoed into caves. Reaching an atoll through the cave was a surreal experience. The boat crew was great who made the tour an enjoyable experience.
The boat trip to Khao Phing Kan / James Bond Island was a pleasant experience, taking us on a scenic route through the mangroves.
Nice but very touristic place. One trick pony. Also all the stalls don't have a price on products and the initial prices they give are extremely ballooned so you need to negotiate and walk away of you don't get a fair deal.

James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan): Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it called James Bond Island?
Because Khao Phing Kan and the Ko Tapu spire played the villain Scaramanga's hideout in The Man with the Golden Gun, the 1974 Bond film. The Thai name means hills leaning against each other, and locals still use it.
Is James Bond Island worth visiting?
As part of a Phang Nga Bay tour, yes. The island itself is 20 to 40 minutes on a crowded beach for the photo of Ko Tapu. The sea canoeing through the caves at Koh Panak and Koh Hong and lunch at Koh Panyee are what make the day.
Can you still visit James Bond Island?
Yes. Every Phang Nga Bay tour lands on Khao Phing Kan. What you can't do is go near Ko Tapu, the spire, because boats have been kept away from it since 1998 to protect its base from erosion.
How much does it cost to go to James Bond Island?
Group day tours from Phuket cost about ฿1,500 on a big boat and about ฿1,700 by speedboat, longtail tours ฿1,400–1,800, and a late-departure speedboat about ฿2,700. Add the ฿300 national park fee for adults (฿150 for children) if the tour doesn't include it.
Which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island?
Different days. Phi Phi is for beaches and snorkeling. Phang Nga Bay, with James Bond Island, is for limestone towers and canoeing into the caves, and because the bay is sheltered it's the usual swap when Phi Phi boats cancel in the rainy season.
How do I avoid the crowds at James Bond Island?
Go at a different hour. An early private longtail from Tha Dan pier near Phang Nga town gets there before the Phuket boats, and a late-departure speedboat from Phuket arrives as they leave. December to February is the busiest stretch.
When is the best time to visit James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan)?
The best months to visit Phuket are November – April, with the most reliable weather. Crowds peak in December – January — going early in the day usually means fewer people. Months to think twice about: May – October (rough seas).
Where is James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) located?
James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) is at Khao Phing Kan, Phang Nga, Thailand, in Phuket. Getting around Phuket: Grab (widely available); Tuk-tuks (fixed routes, negotiate).
