Best Islands in Thailand

The Andaman side (west) has the drama — the limestone karsts, the emerald lagoons, the islands you've seen in every Thailand photo. Its price is a hard season: from May to October the southwest monsoon brings rough seas, cancelled ferries, and shuttered island businesses, especially August–September. Visit November to April and it's flawless.

The Gulf side (east) trades a little drama for a lot of flexibility. Samui, Phangan, and Tao sit in a rain shadow that keeps them swimmable most of the year — their only truly wet window is October–December. If your dates fall in the European summer (June–August), the Gulf is unambiguously the right coast: you'll have sunshine while Phuket gets drenched.

If you're visiting between December and April, you can genuinely do both coasts in one trip — the classic two-week route runs Bangkok → Chiang Mai → one Andaman base → one Gulf base, or simply island-hops down a single coast to cut travel days.

No island in Thailand — arguably in Southeast Asia — matches Phi Phi's raw looks: twin bays separated by a palm-packed sandbar, 100-meter limestone walls rising straight from turquoise water, and Maya Bay (of 'The Beach' fame) around the corner on uninhabited Phi Phi Leh. It's entirely car-free, two hours by ferry from either Phuket or Krabi, and small enough to explore in a weekend.

The honest caveats: Tonsai village is dense and loud (fire shows and beach bars until late), day-trip crowds swamp Maya Bay mid-morning, and prices run higher than the mainland. The fix for all three is the same — stay overnight, sleep at Long Beach or the quieter north end, and take the first boat to Maya Bay at 7am. Overnighters see a completely different island than day-trippers.

Phuket is Thailand's biggest island and the easy answer: direct international flights, world-class hospitals, beaches for every taste (lively Patong, family Kata, upscale Bang Tao and Surin), and more hotel choice than the rest of the islands combined. Purists sniff that it doesn't feel like an island — true, and beside the point. It's the best base for travelers who want beach days with infrastructure, and the springboard for day trips to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, and the Similans.

Koh Yao Noi, 30–45 minutes by boat from either Phuket or Krabi, is its perfect opposite: a quiet Muslim fishing island in the middle of Phang Nga Bay where rice paddies meet rubber plantations, hornbills outnumber bars, and the karst views from the east coast are among Thailand's best. Come here to do very little, beautifully.

Koh Lanta is the island for people who found the others too much: long, uncrowded west-coast beaches, a 30 km/h pace, sunset restaurants on the sand, and enough gentle sights (the old town's sea-gypsy stilt houses, the national park lighthouse) to fill relaxed days. Its flat roads and calm shallow water make it Thailand's best family island, and it's only 1.5 hours from Krabi by van-and-ferry.

Koh Lipe, far south near the Malaysian border, is what people hope Thai islands look like: powder sand at Sunrise and Pattaya beaches, snorkeling straight off the shore into the Ko Tarutao marine park, and water in shades that look color-graded. It takes commitment to reach (fly to Hat Yai, then van + 1.5h speedboat from Pak Bara), which is exactly what keeps it special. Go November–April; the island substantially closes in monsoon season.

Koh Samui is the Gulf's polished flagship: an airport with direct regional flights, five-star resorts alongside ฿1,200 guesthouses, and beaches for every mood (busy Chaweng, calmer Choeng Mon, sunset-facing Lipa Noi). It's the least effort of any Thai island — which makes it the default for honeymoons, families, and anyone allergic to long ferry days.

Koh Phangan, thirty minutes north by ferry, leads a double life. Once a month, Haad Rin hosts the Full Moon Party and 10,000 painted revelers; the rest of the island, especially the north and west coasts, has quietly become Southeast Asia's yoga-and-wellness capital, with jungle beaches like Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan that rank among Thailand's finest. Pick your coast to pick your Phangan.

Koh Tao exists for one reason and does it better than almost anywhere on earth: diving. Open Water certification costs ฿9,000–11,000 — roughly a third of what you'd pay in the Caribbean — with easy warm-water dive sites (Chumphon Pinnacle, Sail Rock nearby) and a sociable dive-school town culture. Snorkelers get their money's worth too, especially at Koh Nang Yuan's triple-island sandbar next door.

Thailand's east coast, near the Cambodian border, is the least international of the three island groups — and the best value. Koh Chang is the wildest: a big, mountainous, jungle-covered island with waterfall hikes inland and a string of increasingly mellow west-coast beaches (party at Lonely Beach, families at Klong Prao). Getting there is a 5-hour bus-and-ferry from Bangkok, which filters the crowds beautifully.

Koh Samet is Bangkok's weekend beach — barely 3 hours door to door — with fine white sand and a lively Thai-weekender scene; go midweek and you'll have Ao Wai nearly to yourself. Koh Kood, furthest out, is the quiet stunner: empty white beaches, clear water, mangrove kayaking, and a handful of exceptional resorts.
