Koh Lipe in One Paragraph
Koh Lipe is a small island at the far southern end of Thailand's Andaman coast, in Satun province, about 2 km long and a short boat ride from Malaysia's Langkawi. It sits inside Tarutao National Marine Park, among protected islands, and that's why people come. Shared longtail trips to the reefs around Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and Hin Ngam cost about ฿600–800, and the walk from Pattaya Beach on one side to Sunrise Beach on the other takes about 20 minutes down Walking Street.
There are no cars to speak of and no scooters to rent, so you walk or take a ฿50 sidecar. It isn't cheap for Thailand, and it's a long way from anywhere, about four hours from Hat Yai airport by van and speedboat. Give it four nights, come between November and April, and know that from May to October at least half the island closes.

Key Facts
Three main beaches, all within walking distance
Pattaya Beach in the south is where the boats arrive, Sunrise Beach in the east has the best swimming, and Sunset Beach in the west is the quiet one. Walking Street joins them in about 20 minutes.
Everyone pays the ฿200 park fee on arrival
Children pay ฿100, in cash. Keep the ticket, because it's checked at Hin Ngam on the snorkeling trips, and divers pay ฿200 more for each day they dive.
The longtail snorkeling trips are why you come
Shared trips cost about ฿600–800 a person for four to eight hours. A private longtail costs about ฿1,800–2,800 a boat, depending on how far out you go.
You walk, because visitors can't rent scooters
Motorbike sidecars carry people for about ฿50 each, and longtails run between beaches for about ฿50.
Bring cash, and budget more than on the mainland
There are ATMs on Walking Street, but many places want cash and cards often carry a surcharge. Plan on about ฿1,600 a day on a budget and ฿4,500 mid-range.
November to April, or not at all for most people
From May to October only the Pak Bara boats run, at least half the restaurants, bars and tour shops close, and the sea gets rough.
Is Koh Lipe Worth Visiting?
Yes, if snorkeling and clear water are the point and you have at least three nights. The reefs around the park islands are a short longtail ride away, Sunrise Beach is one of the prettiest in the country, and the whole island is small enough to walk.
It's not the quiet castaway island some photos suggest. Lipe has grown fast, longtails crowd the front of Pattaya and Sunrise beaches, and in December and January Walking Street is busy every night. It's also pricier than most Thai islands, because almost everything comes in by boat, and the trip in takes most of a day.
Krabi or Koh Lipe? Krabi for limestone scenery, easy flights and day trips. Lipe for snorkeling straight from a longtail and a small, car-free island. In season, the speedboat from Koh Lanta takes three hours, so plenty of trips do Krabi, then Lanta, then Lipe.
Koh Lipe's Beaches, and Which One Suits You
Ranked by how I'd pick a beach for a first visit. They're all within walking distance, so you can base yourself on one and swim at another.
1. Sunrise Beach, The east coast
Swimming and the view of Koh AdangThe island's longest beach, white sand with shallow, gently shelving water and the jungle hills of Koh Adang across the channel. It's the best beach on Lipe for swimming, and where most of the longtails wait for the snorkeling trips.
2. Pattaya Beach, The south coast
Restaurants, bars and the boatsA sheltered bay where the speedboats arrive, lined with resorts, restaurants and beach bars, with Walking Street starting behind it. The busiest beach and the easiest base, with the most boat traffic.
3. Sunset Beach, The northwest coast
Quiet and the sunsetA smaller, quieter beach facing west, with a few bungalows and bars and the island's best evening sky.
4. North Point, The northern tip
A quiet swimA little beach at the top of the island, past the north end of Sunrise Beach, with calm water and far fewer people than the main beaches.
The Best Things to Do on Koh Lipe
Ordered by how much I'd prioritize them on a first visit of four nights.
1. A longtail snorkeling trip to the park islands, Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, Hin Ngam and Koh Yang
The best day outThe reason most people come. A longtail takes you to four to eight snorkeling stops on the reefs around the islands north of Lipe, with lunch on a beach on Koh Rawi. Shared trips cost about ฿600–800 a person, and the ฿200 park ticket you bought on arrival covers the islands.
- Getting there
- Book at a stand on Walking Street or Sunrise Beach.
- When to go
- November to April, setting out in the morning.
2. The Chado Cliff viewpoint on Koh Adang, Across the channel from Sunrise Beach
The view of LipeThe classic photo of Lipe, taken from a lookout on the big jungle island opposite. The trail is only about 1 km but steep, with ropes in places, so allow 45 minutes to an hour up, and go early before the heat. A longtail from Sunrise Beach costs about ฿100 each way.
The park closes parts of Adang outside the high season, and its reopening date varies from year to year, so ask at the park office or your boat driver before you go.
- Getting there
- Longtail from Sunrise Beach to the park station at Laem Son.
- When to go
- Early morning.
3. Walking Street, The middle of the island
Dinner and an evening strollThe pedestrian street that runs from Pattaya Beach to Sunrise Beach, lined with seafood barbecues, Thai restaurants, cafés, dive shops, massage places and the island's 7-Eleven. It's where everyone ends up after dark.
- Getting there
- On foot from any beach.
- When to go
- From sunset.
4. Diving at Stonehenge and Eight Mile Rock, Around the park islands
DiversLipe's dive shops visit the reefs and pinnacles around the park, from the boulders of Stonehenge to Eight Mile Rock, a deeper site for experienced divers. Two dives cost about ฿3,000, plus the ฿200 park fee for each diving day, and an Open Water course about ฿14,500.
- Getting there
- Dive shops on Walking Street and the beaches.
- When to go
- November to April.
5. Koh Hin Ngam, North of Koh Adang
The striped black stonesA small island whose beach is all smooth, dark, banded stones instead of sand, and a stop on most snorkeling trips. Taking a stone is banned, and local belief says it brings bad luck until you send it back.
- Getting there
- On a snorkeling trip.
- When to go
- With the trip.
6. Kayak to Koh Kra, Just off Sunrise Beach
An easy hour on the waterThe small rocky islet a few hundred meters off Sunrise Beach, with coral around it, close enough to paddle to in a rented kayak on a calm morning.
- Getting there
- Rent a kayak on Sunrise Beach.
- When to go
- A calm morning.
Snorkeling Trips From Koh Lipe
Trips are sold as the near or inner islands and the far or outer islands. The inner trip usually stops at Jabang's soft corals, Hin Ngam's stones, Koh Yang and Koh Adang, with lunch on Koh Rawi, in about six hours. The outer trip adds smaller islands further out and takes seven or eight. If you only do one, do the inner trip first.
Shared trips take a longtail of ten to fifteen people and cost about ฿600–800 each, usually with masks, lunch and water, but often not fins. A private longtail lets you leave before the shared boats and choose the order, for about ฿1,800–2,800 a boat. Bring your park ticket, reef-safe sunscreen and a shirt for the sun.
How Many Days Do You Need on Koh Lipe?
Four nights suits most people. That gives you a day on the inner-islands snorkeling trip, a morning on Koh Adang's viewpoint, a second boat day to the outer islands or a dive, and a day on Sunrise Beach.
Three nights is the minimum to make the journey worth it, since you lose most of a day each way getting in and out. Plenty of people stay a week, especially divers.

Getting to Koh Lipe
Lipe has no airport, so every route ends with a speedboat. The one that runs all year is via Hat Yai. Fly there from Bangkok in about 1 hour 30, and Bundhaya's van leaves the airport at 09:00 and 11:00 for Pak Bara pier, reaching Lipe at 13:00 or 15:00, for ฿950 in all.
From 15 October to late May, ferries cross from Langkawi in Malaysia in 90 minutes, with Thai immigration on the beach when you land, and island-hopping speedboats run down the coast from Koh Lanta (three hours, ฿1,700), Koh Phi Phi (about four hours, ฿2,350) and Phuket (about five hours, ฿2,500). The big boats stop off the beach, and a longtail takes you to the sand for about ฿50. Every route, with times and fares, is in How to Get to Koh Lipe.

Getting Around Koh Lipe
On foot. Walking Street crosses the island from Pattaya Beach to Sunrise Beach in about 20 minutes, and even the farthest corners are only about 45 minutes apart. Visitors can't rent scooters, and there are almost no cars.
For luggage or tired legs, motorbikes with sidecars charge about ฿50 a person for a ride anywhere on the island, and longtails carry you between beaches for about ฿50.
Money and Costs on Koh Lipe
Lipe costs more than the mainland and more than most islands, because food, fuel and drinks all arrive by boat. On my numbers, a budget day runs about ฿1,600 and a mid-range day about ฿4,500, before boat trips.
There are ATMs on Walking Street, but carry enough cash for the park fee, the longtails and small restaurants, since many don't take cards and those that do often add a surcharge. The park has banned plastic bags and foam boxes, so bring a bottle and a bag.
When to Go
November to April is the season. February is the driest month, with about 24 mm of rain at the Phuket weather station, the sea is calm and all the boats run. December and January are the busiest and priciest, so book rooms early.
May to October is the monsoon, with about 350 mm of rain in September. The Langkawi ferries and the island-hopping speedboats stop, leaving only the Pak Bara boats, the sea can be rough, and at least half the restaurants, bars and tour shops close. Parts of the national park close too. If those are your months, an island on the Gulf side, such as Koh Samui, is the better bet.
Plan the rest of the trip.
