Krabi vs Koh Lipe: which is better for your trip?
Krabi for scenery, day trips and easy logistics; Koh Lipe for the clearest water in Thailand and a car-free island where you snorkel from the beach. Lipe costs more, takes most of a day to reach, and half closes from May to October.

Pick Krabi if…
- You want cliffs, climbing, the Four Islands and a mainland airport
- Your trip is short, or you're traveling with kids
- Budget matters, and Krabi is about ฿300 a day cheaper
Pick Koh Lipe if…
- Snorkeling and water clarity are the whole point
- You want small, walkable and boat-only, with longtails to empty islands
- You're traveling November to April and have time for the journey
Why I'd choose that way
Krabi is limestone and logistics, with Railay, the Four Islands, the Hong lagoon, Tiger Cave Temple, ferries to Phi Phi and Koh Lanta, and an airport with direct Bangkok flights. Ao Nang is the base, and it works.
Koh Lipe is Thailand's southernmost island, inside Tarutao National Marine Park and closer to Langkawi than to any big Thai town. The water is the clearest in the country; Sunrise Beach's sandbar and the reefs off Koh Adang are snorkeling you don't need a boat for. It's under 3 km long, car-free, and firmly seasonal. From May to October ferries thin out and many resorts close.
Getting there is the price of admission, a speedboat from Pak Bara (about 1.5 hours) or a combo from Hat Yai airport (about 4 hours door to door, ฿950), plus high-season boats from Koh Lanta. Daily costs are higher too, about ฿1,600 on a budget against Krabi's ฿1,300.

Is Koh Lipe worth the journey?
Yes if snorkeling and water are the point and you have at least three nights. No if you have a short trip or are visiting between May and October.
Which has better beaches, Krabi or Koh Lipe?
Lipe's are clearer and calmer; Krabi's (Railay, Phra Nang) are more dramatic. Krabi's water is best on a boat trip; Lipe's is best from the sand.
Is Koh Lipe expensive?
