Koh Tao in One Paragraph
Koh Tao is a small, steep island in the Gulf of Thailand, about 21 km² of granite boulders and pocket bays, an hour or two by boat beyond Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. It's one of the world's busiest places to learn to dive, and an Open Water course here costs about ฿11,000–12,500, with dozens of schools on the west coast. You don't have to dive to enjoy it, though. The snorkeling off the beaches is the best in the Gulf, Koh Nang Yuan's three islets and their sandbar are a short boat ride away, and the viewpoints repay a sweaty climb.
Stay on Sairee for the bars and the sunset, Chalok Baan Kao for quiet, or an east-coast bay like Tanote to get away from everyone. Give it four nights, longer for a course, and come between February and September, because the monsoon from October to December brings the rain and the rough boats.

Key Facts
An Open Water course costs about ฿11,000–12,500
Three to four days, with a room free or discounted at many schools. Fun dives run about ฿800–1,200 each, cheaper in packs.
Koh Nang Yuan charges ฿250, and plastic bottles aren't allowed
Children pay ฿120. Taxi boats from Sairee cost about ฿100–150 each way and take 15 minutes.
The roads are steep, so think twice about a scooter
Scooters rent for about ฿200–300 a day, but the concrete hills and dirt tracks to the east-coast bays catch out a lot of riders. Taxis and taxi boats cover everything.
Bring cash for the small fees
Viewpoints and some beaches charge ฿50–100 at the gate. ATMs at the 7-Elevens and the Mae Haad banks charge about ฿220 per foreign-card withdrawal.
October to December is the wet season here
November averages 445 mm of rain at the Koh Samui weather station, and boats can be canceled. February is the driest month, with 64 mm.
Is Koh Tao Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if you want to learn to dive or snorkel. The water around Koh Tao is warm, usually calm from February to September, and full of life close to shore, with turtles and blacktip reef sharks seen in the bays. Learning here costs a fraction of what it does in most of the world, and the whole island is set up for it, from the dive boats leaving at dawn to the sunset beers on Sairee afterward.
It isn't a long-beach island. Sairee is the one big stretch of sand, and the rest are small coves you reach down steep roads or by boat. The island is busy and built up along the west coast, and if you want resort pools and a choice of long swimming beaches, Koh Samui does that better.
Koh Tao or Koh Samui? Koh Samui for comfort, families and big hotels. Koh Tao for diving, snorkeling and a younger, more social crowd. Many people do both, since the boat between them takes under two hours.
Diving on Koh Tao
An Open Water course, the first full certification, takes three to four days and costs about ฿11,000–12,500, depending on the school and whether it's PADI or SSI. Ban's Diving Resort charges ฿11,000 for its PADI course with discounted rooms, and Crystal Dive ฿12,500 for SSI with four nights' accommodation included. An Advanced course costs about ฿10,000–12,000 more. The price differences between schools are small, so choose on class size, reviews and how you get on with the instructors.
If you're not sure diving is for you, a try dive is a single day with an instructor to a maximum of 12 m, with no certification. Certified divers pay about ฿800–1,200 a dive, less in packs.
The island has more than 25 dive sites. The training sites like Japanese Gardens and Twins are shallow and sheltered. The deeper pinnacles, Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock, both down to about 45 m, are the big days out, and they're where whale sharks turn up. There's no fixed season for them, and most sightings are reported between about February and September.
The Best Things to Do on Koh Tao
Ordered by how much I'd prioritize them on a first visit of four nights, after any diving.
1. Koh Nang Yuan, Off the northwest coast, 15 minutes by boat
The view and the snorkelingThree small islands joined by a white sandbar, with a short, steep climb to the viewpoint that shows up on every Koh Tao postcard. The snorkeling off the sandbar is good, and the island has a resort and a restaurant.
Entry costs ฿250 for adults and ฿120 for children, and staff search bags for plastic bottles, which aren't allowed. Go early, before the day boats from Samui and Phangan arrive.
- Getting there
- Taxi boat from Sairee or Mae Haad, about ฿100–150 each way, or on a snorkeling day trip.
- When to go
- First boat in the morning for the viewpoint without the crowd.
2. Snorkeling at Shark Bay and Aow Leuk, The southeast coast
Turtles and reef sharks off the beachShark Bay, also called Thian Og, is where people snorkel with turtles and small blacktip reef sharks in the shallows, especially early in the morning. Aow Leuk, the next bay north, has clear water and coral straight off a small beach, and charges about ฿100 with a sunbed and a drink.
Keep your distance from the turtles and sharks, and wear reef-safe sunscreen.
- Getting there
- By taxi or taxi boat. The roads down to both are steep.
- When to go
- Early morning, when the water is calmest and the wildlife closest.
3. Sairee Beach, The west coast
Sunset and the social sceneThe island's one long beach, about 1.85 km of sand lined with dive schools, bars and restaurants. The water is calm and shallow for swimming most of the year, and the sunset over the sea draws everyone out in the evening.
- Getting there
- Walkable from most of the west coast, or a short taxi from Mae Haad pier.
- When to go
- Late afternoon to sunset.
4. John-Suwan Viewpoint, Above Freedom Beach, the southern tip
The view over the twin southern baysA short, steep scramble over boulders to a rock above the island's southern tip, looking down on Chalok Baan Kao and Shark Bay on either side. You pay about ฿50 at the Freedom Beach gate and another ฿50 at the trail.
Wear proper shoes, and don't do it in the midday heat.
- Getting there
- Walk from Chalok Baan Kao through Freedom Beach.
- When to go
- Early morning or sunset.
5. Tanote Bay, The east coast
A quiet cove with good snorkelingA small sheltered bay ringed by boulders, with coral and fish a few strokes from the beach. It's the easiest of the east-coast bays to reach, and much quieter than the west coast.
- Getting there
- By taxi or taxi boat, about ฿150–200 by longtail from Mae Haad. The road over the hill is steep.
- When to go
- Morning, when the light is on the water.
6. Freedom Beach and Chalok Baan Kao, The south coast
A quieter base and beach dayChalok Baan Kao is a shallow, sheltered bay with a small village of restaurants and dive schools, calmer than Sairee. Freedom Beach, a short walk around the headland, is a small white-sand cove that charges about ฿50 to enter.
- Getting there
- By taxi from Mae Haad pier.
- When to go
- Any time, and it's sheltered when the west coast is choppy.
7. A snorkeling day trip around the island, Round the island by boat
Seeing the far bays in one dayThe easiest way to see the bays you can't reach by road. The classic day trip stops at Koh Nang Yuan, Mango Bay, Hin Wong, Aow Leuk and Shark Bay, with lunch on board and the Nang Yuan fee included.
- Getting there
- Hotel pickup is included on most trips.
- When to go
- Book a day ahead in the high season.
A Snorkeling Day Trip Around Koh Tao
If you only do one organized trip, make it a round-the-island snorkeling day. Most of Koh Tao's best snorkeling is in bays that are a long, steep ride apart or have no road at all, and a boat takes you to five of them in a day, with lunch on board, the masks and fins, and the Koh Nang Yuan fee.
How Many Days Do You Need on Koh Tao?
Four nights suits most people who aren't diving. That gives you a day for Koh Nang Yuan and Sairee, a day for the snorkeling trip around the island, a day for the south coast with Shark Bay, Freedom Beach and the John-Suwan viewpoint, and a spare day for weather or doing nothing.
If you're taking the Open Water course, add four days for it, and a day or two after to fun dive or rest before you fly. Many people who come for a course stay for weeks.
Where to Stay on Koh Tao
Sairee is the default, with the beach, the dive schools and the nightlife. Mae Haad is for an early boat, Chalok Baan Kao for quiet with restaurants nearby, and the east-coast bays for getting away from it all if you don't mind the steep road.
1. Koh Tao Cabana, Sairee, north end of the beach
Best beach stay on SaireeCottages and villas in the trees and up the rocks at the quiet end of Sairee, a walk along the sand from the village. It's my pick for most people who want Sairee's sunsets with more space than a guesthouse.
2. Blue Tao Beach Hotel, Sairee
Mid-range on the beachA beachside hotel steps from the water on Sairee, close to the dive schools and restaurants.
3. Nomads Koh Tao Hostel, Sairee area
BackpackersA sociable hostel for divers and backpackers, the easy way to meet people on an island that runs on group dive trips.
4. Sensi Paradise Beach Resort, Mae Haad, near the pier
Near the ferryTeak bungalows above Mae Haad Bay with a saltwater infinity pool, a few minutes' walk from the pier for an easy arrival and an early boat out.
5. Assava Diving Koh Tao, Chalok Baan Kao
A dive course with a roomA beach dive resort on Chalok Baan Kao with its own PADI school, so the classroom, the boat and your bed are in one place.

8. Sai Daeng Resort, Sai Daeng, near Shark Bay
The south-coast snorkelingA beachfront resort with a pool on Sai Daeng beach, next to Shark Bay, for snorkeling with the turtles before breakfast.
Getting to Koh Tao
From Bangkok, the simplest way is Lomprayah's combined ticket, a night bus from Khao San Road and the catamaran from Chumphon, arriving at 08:45 for ฿1,250, or ฿850 with the slow ferry. A sleeper train to Chumphon plus the boat costs about ฿1,630, and you can also fly to Chumphon at 07:25 and reach Koh Tao by 15:00. My Bangkok to Koh Tao guide has every option.
From Koh Samui, fast boats take 1.5 to 2 hours and cost ฿700, and slow ferries take up to three for ฿450–550. From Koh Phangan it's about an hour. Every boat docks at Mae Haad pier on the west coast.

Getting Around Koh Tao
The west coast between Mae Haad and Sairee is walkable. For anything further, pickup-truck taxis wait at the pier and in Sairee, about ฿100 a person for the short hop from Mae Haad to Sairee when they're shared, more for the east-coast bays. Taxi boats are often the easier way to the far bays, about ฿150–200 from Mae Haad to Tanote.
Scooters cost about ฿200–300 a day, but Koh Tao's roads are very steep concrete, with sand and gravel on the turns, and the tracks down to the east-coast bays are rougher still. If you haven't ridden much, use taxis. Tap water isn't safe to drink, so buy bottled or refill.
When to Go
Koh Tao is on the Gulf side, so its seasons run differently from Phuket and Krabi. February to September is the best time, with calm seas and the clearest water for diving, and February is the driest month, with about 64 mm of rain at the Koh Samui weather station. July and August are busy with the European summer holidays, with about 100–120 mm of rain a month, a third of the monsoon's.
October to December is the monsoon here. November is the wettest month, with about 445 mm, the boats can be rough or canceled, and dive visibility drops. Courses still run, but it's the worst time to plan a diving trip around.
Plan the rest of the trip.
