Pick Koh Samui if…
- You want to fly in, and a choice of beach clubs, spas and boutique hotels
- Your dates are June to September
- Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are on the plan
Pick Koh Chang if…
- You want a greener, quieter island with waterfalls and jungle behind the beach
- Budget matters, since it's about a third cheaper per day
- You're coming overland from Bangkok and don't mind a long day
Why I'd choose that way
Samui is the polished one, with an airport, Chaweng and Lamai, Bophut's Fisherman's Village, destination spas, Ang Thong Marine Park by boat, and a 30-minute ferry to Koh Phangan. It costs more (about ฿1,600 a day on a budget) and its wet season is October to December.
Koh Chang is bigger, wilder and farther from an airport. Most of it is national-park jungle, the beaches run down the west coast from lively White Sand to backpacker Lonely Beach, and Bang Bao's pier is the launch point for Koh Mak and Koh Kood. Getting there is a five-to-six-hour bus to Trat plus a ferry, or a flight to Trat. June to September is its rough season, with closures.
If you want an island to relax into with everything laid on, Samui. If you want the feel of the islands twenty years ago and don't mind working for it, Chang.

Is Koh Chang cheaper than Koh Samui?
Yes, about ฿1,100 a day on a budget against ฿1,600, and ฿2,800 against ฿4,500 mid-range.
Which is easier to get to?
Samui, by flight from Bangkok (Bangkok Airways) or via Surat Thani and the ferry. Koh Chang has no airport; it's a bus to Trat and a ferry, or a Bangkok Airways flight to Trat then the ferry.
Which is better for families?
Samui's north coast (Maenam, Choeng Mon) is calm and easy. Koh Chang's Klong Prao works well too, with the bonus of waterfalls and a slower pace, but the roads between beaches are steep.
Which has better diving and snorkeling?
Neither is a dive island; Koh Tao (from Samui) and the Similans (from the Andaman) are. Koh Chang's Bang Bao day trips to the outer islands are the better snorkeling of the two.
