When Is the Next Full Moon Party?

The Full Moon Party happens roughly fourteen times a year on Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach, Koh Phangan — and since 2026 it falls on the actual night of the full moon, after Thailand adjusted the alcohol-sales rules that used to shunt parties around Buddhist holy days. The remaining confirmed 2026 dates are in the table below; the official 2027 schedule is published around mid-year by the Haad Rin Business Association, and until then the full moon calendar itself is your reliable guide. The night is cheap by festival standards — a small beach entry fee, buckets from a few hundred baht, ฿1,500–4,000 covers most people's whole evening — but the logistics reward planning: Haad Rin's rooms book out weeks ahead with minimum stays, and the island has no airport, so everyone arrives by ferry. This guide covers the dates, the night itself, where to stay, how to get there, and the handful of survival rules that separate a great story from a bad one.

Since 2026, parties fall on the actual full moon night. The official 2027 schedule is released around mid-year by the Haad Rin Business Association — until then, the lunar calendar is the projection (first moons: ~22 January and ~22 February 2027). Around Songkran and major holidays, always reconfirm locally a few days out.

Key Facts (2026)

It happens in exactly one place

Haad Rin Nok — Sunrise Beach — a horseshoe of sand on Koh Phangan's south-eastern tip, lined with a dozen bar sound systems from commercial EDM to drum & bass. 'Full moon parties' advertised anywhere else in Thailand are imitations.

What the night costs

A small beach entry fee (about ฿100–200, collected at the walkways), buckets from roughly ฿300–500, street food after midnight, and a songthaew or boat home if you're not staying in Haad Rin. ฿1,500–4,000 covers most people's whole night.

Haad Rin books out — with strings

Rooms within stumbling distance sell out weeks ahead of each party and most enforce 3–5 night minimum stays around the date. Ban Tai and Thongsala are the value bases with easy songthaew runs; Srithanu is the quiet escape on the far coast.

Ferries only — there is no airport

From Koh Samui it's 20–45 minutes (Lomprayah, Seatran, Raja); from the mainland, Surat Thani's boats and night ferries connect with buses and trains. Boats fill on party days — book the day before, and don't cut the last sailing fine.

Miss the moon? The island doesn't stop

Halfmoon Festival stages jungle editions about a week either side of each full moon, Jungle Experience and OXA run their own calendars, and Haad Rin's bars fire most high-season nights anyway. A one-week trip almost always catches something big.

The rules that actually matter

Wear shoes (glass in sand is the #1 injury), stay out of the sea after dark, pace the buckets, keep valuables in your room's safe — not on the beach — and skip the fire jump rope. Scooter + party night is the island's worst equation; take songthaews.

What the Night Is Actually Like

The party has run since the late 1980s — backpacker legend says it began as a birthday gathering on the sand — and has grown into nights that draw anywhere from a few thousand low-season souls to 20,000-plus at peak editions. It doesn't have a headliner or a stage; it has a beach. Each bar along Sunrise Beach runs its own sound system — commercial dance at the old anchors like Cactus and Drop In in the centre, harder styles toward the rocks — and the crowd migrates between them all night, painted in UV, holding buckets, occasionally airborne. Fire shows fill the gaps: limbo lines, flaming skipping ropes (watch, don't jump; the burns are a Haad Rin clinic staple), and performers who are genuinely excellent at the safe end of the spectacle.

The rhythm rewards patience. Sunset belongs to the warm-up — the hillside terraces of Amsterdam Bar on the island's west side are the traditional gentle first act — Haad Rin fills from about 22:00, peaks somewhere between 1:00 and 3:00, and the committed see a genuinely beautiful sunrise over the same sand at 6:00. Street stalls behind the beach run all night: the 2am pad kra pao is part of the experience. Pace accordingly — it is a marathon with the packaging of a sprint.

Where to Stay for the Party

The trade is simple: proximity versus peace, and on party dates, booking lead time versus price. Haad Rin itself is the stumble-home option — guesthouses and small hotels five minutes from the sand — and it books out weeks ahead of every party with 3–5 night minimums standard; if the party is the whole point of your trip, pay the premium, book the minimum, and treat the extra days as recovery on a genuinely lovely beach. Ban Tai and Thongsala, 10–20 minutes west, are the value play: normal prices, no minimums most dates, and songthaews shuttling the party route all night for a few hundred baht (agree the price before you get in; it rises with the moon). Srithanu and the west coast are the escape hatch — the yoga village barely registers the party, and plenty of travellers deliberately stay there and commute to the chaos exactly once.

One warning that saves arguments: rooms anywhere on the island get scarcer and pricier for the December and New Year editions — for those, book the moment your dates are fixed.

The Rest of the Party Calendar

Koh Phangan's real secret is that the full moon is just the loudest date on a month-long calendar. Halfmoon Festival stages its produced jungle editions — lasers through the trees, festival staging, ticketed and all the better for it — roughly a week before and after each full moon at its Magical Forest site inland from Ban Tai. Jungle Experience runs the connoisseur's alternative nearby: a boulder-strewn forest dancefloor with more underground line-ups. OXA's jungle parties carry the island's biggest club-night energy, and smaller traditions (waterfall parties, black moon editions) surface through high season. The practical upshot: a week on the island at almost any time of year catches at least one big night — and many veterans quietly prefer the jungle editions to the beach.

Survival, Honestly

The party's dangers are mundane and almost entirely avoidable. Glass in the sand is the classic injury — wear shoes, all night, no exceptions. The sea after dark is not a swimming pool: between buckets, currents and boat traffic, night swimming is how most of the party's serious incidents happen. Buckets deserve respect — they're shared, sweet, and stronger than they taste; get your own, watch it poured, and count them. Leave valuables in your room's safe and carry a photo of your passport plus modest cash; the beach at 2am is a pickpocket's workplace. Skip the fire jump rope (the performers are professionals; you are not), don't ride a scooter to or from the party, and know that Thailand's drug laws remain severe and enforced — party-night policing is real, and the buckets are legal fun enough.

The unglamorous winners' habits: eat a real dinner first, alternate water in, agree a meeting point with your group (the burger stands behind the beach are the classic), and book your recovery day empty. Travel insurance that actually covers the night — see our insurance guide — costs less than one bucket round.
