- You'd like a cheaper base and a mainland airport with far more flights
Why I'd choose that way
The weather calendar comes first here because the two coasts are out of phase. Samui's wet season runs October to December and its sunniest weeks are July and August. Krabi's rough-sea months are June to September and its peak is December to February. Pick the coast that's dry for your dates, then read on.
Krabi is limestone: Railay's boat-only beaches under 300-meter walls, 700-plus climbing routes, the Four Islands and the Hong lagoon, Tiger Cave Temple's 1,237 steps, and ferries to Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Ao Nang is the working base. It's a day-trip destination more than a lie-on-the-beach one, and it costs about ฿300 a day less than Samui on a budget.
Samui is the island that does comfort well. Chaweng for buzz, Lamai for a slower version of it, Bophut's Fisherman's Village for boutique hotels and the Friday market, Maenam for quiet sand. The interior is surprisingly wild (Na Muang waterfalls), Ang Thong Marine Park is the boat day, and Koh Phangan is 30 minutes away. Getting there costs more, since Bangkok Airways has the airport to itself; the Surat Thani ferry is the cheaper route.

There's no direct ferry: it's a bus-and-boat combo across the peninsula via Surat Thani, or a flight via Bangkok. Most people who do both start in Bangkok, fly to one and combo across to the other. Give it a full travel day.

Koh Samui or Krabi: the questions people ask
Is Krabi or Koh Samui better in December?
Krabi. December is inside Samui's wettest period and the start of Krabi's peak season. If you're locked into Christmas dates and want a Gulf island, Koh Samui is a gamble; the Andaman is the safe call.
Is Koh Samui or Krabi cheaper?
Krabi, by a few hundred baht a day on any budget: about ฿1,300 against ฿1,600 for backpackers and ฿3,500 against ฿4,500 mid-range. Flights add to the gap because Samui's airport is a one-airline monopoly.
Which is better for families?
Both work. Samui is easier: the north-coast beaches (Maenam, Choeng Mon) are calm and the ring road makes everything reachable. Krabi's big draw for kids is the boat trips, which depend on calm seas, so it's the stronger family choice in the dry months.
Can I do both in two weeks?
Yes, and it's a good two weeks: a week on each coast with a travel day in the middle. Order it by the calendar so each coast is as close to its dry season as your dates allow.
