Koh Samui to Koh Tao Ferry

Koh Samui's boats to Koh Tao leave from three different places, and which one depends entirely on the operator you booked. Lomprayah, whose catamarans are the fastest and most-used option, sails from Pralarn pier at Maenam on the north coast. Seatran Discovery goes from Bangrak — also called Big Buddha pier — a few kilometres east. Songserm's slower conventional ferry uses Nathon, the main town pier on the west coast. Nathon to Maenam is a good half hour by road, more in Chaweng's evening traffic.

This is a solved problem the moment you read your ticket, and a ruined morning if you don't. Do not rely on your hotel's assumption, a taxi driver's guess, or a schedule you screenshotted last month — operators have moved sailings between piers before and will again. The e-ticket names the pier. Leave with enough margin for the drive, and arrive thirty minutes before departure; these boats board properly and they leave on time.

One thing that surprises people mid-crossing and shouldn't: almost every Samui–Tao boat calls at Thong Sala on Koh Phangan. Passengers get off, others get on, and you stay in your seat. It's built into the quoted journey time and it is not a sign you've boarded the wrong service.

The Gulf coast runs on a different weather calendar to the Andaman side, and its monsoon lands in the last quarter of the year — October through December, peaking in November. That's the window when Samui–Tao crossings get cancelled, and Koh Tao's boats go first: it's the smallest and most exposed of the three islands, and the run north from Phangan is open water with nothing to shelter behind.

In practice this rarely ruins a trip, but it reliably ruins tight connections. The rule that matters: never schedule a Koh Tao departure for the day before an international flight between October and December. Leave a buffer night on Samui, where the airport is. Travellers who compress that get very familiar with the Mae Haad pier waiting room.

Outside those months the crossing is routine and walk-up tickets are usually fine. High season — roughly January through April, plus July and August — is busy enough that morning boats fill, so book a day or two ahead if you want a specific departure. Around the Full Moon Party dates on Koh Phangan, everything on this water is full in both directions.

Boats land at Mae Haad on Koh Tao's west coast, which is the island's main village as well as its pier — walkable, full of dive shops, and the place most people end up eating on their first night. Sairee Beach, the long strip where most of the accommodation and nightlife sits, is about ten minutes north: songthaews meet every boat at ฿100–200 per person depending on how full they are and how far along Sairee you're going. Chalok Baan Kao in the south costs a little more.

Now the part worth saying plainly: do not day-trip Koh Tao from Samui. Three to four hours on boats round trip, a last return sailing in mid-afternoon, and you'd get perhaps four hours ashore — on an island whose entire reason to exist is what's under the water. A discover-scuba session or a single fun dive eats most of a day by itself. Two nights is the realistic minimum, three if you're doing an Open Water course, which is what a large share of the island's visitors are there for.

If your time genuinely is that tight, the better version of the same day is Koh Phangan: the boat is 30–45 minutes from Samui rather than two hours, it runs far more often, and the last one back is late enough to have dinner ashore.
