Bangkok to Koh Samet

A Bus to Ban Phe, Then the Boat

Koh Samet is the closest real beach island to Bangkok, and getting there is two steps. First you go by road to Ban Phe, the fishing town on the Rayong coast about 186 km from Ekkamai, then you take a boat across to the island, about 40 minutes on the wooden ferry or 15 by speedboat. All in, it takes 3.5 to 5 hours. The cheapest way is the Cherdchai bus from Ekkamai, which leaves at 07:00, 09:00 and 11:00 and drops you at Nuan Thip pier for about ฿190. The easiest is a combined ticket, bus or van and boat together for about ฿350 to ฿670. With bags or a family, a car with the boat included starts at about ฿3,000 and takes the planning out of it. Foreigners pay a ฿200 national park fee when they land, in cash.

The Bus From Ekkamai to Ban Phe

Cherdchai Tour runs the bus from the Eastern Bus Terminal at Ekkamai, next to BTS Ekkamai, straight to Ban Phe, with departures at 07:00, 09:00 and 11:00. The fare is about ฿190, the ride takes 3 to 4 hours, and it ends at Nuan Thip pier, where the ferry counters are, so you walk off the bus and onto a boat. Coming back, the buses leave Ban Phe at 12:00 and 14:00.

Outside those times, vans to Ban Phe leave from Bangkok's bus terminals (the old vans at Victory Monument were moved to the terminals in 2016), and the combined tickets sold on 12Go and in Khao San travel agencies put you on a bus or van in the morning with the boat to the island included, for about ฿350 to ฿670. They're the simplest choice if you'd rather not buy two tickets.

The Boat From Ban Phe to Na Dan

Ban Phe has several piers, and Nuan Thip is the main one. The wooden ferries run roughly hourly through the day to Na Dan, the island's main pier in the north, and take about 40 minutes for about ฿50 to ฿70 one way or ฿100 to ฿120 return. Speedboats cross in about 15 minutes, as a shared seat for about ฿200 to Sai Kaew and up to ฿500 to the beaches further south, or as a private charter for ฿1,800 to ฿3,000 depending on where you're going.

The ferry is fine for Sai Kaew, Ao Phai and anywhere near Na Dan. If your hotel is on Ao Wong Duean, Ao Prao or further south, a speedboat straight to that beach saves a bumpy songthaew ride across the island. Boats start in the morning and the last ferries leave in the late afternoon, so on a late bus, plan on a speedboat or a night in Ban Phe.

When you land, foreigners pay the ฿200 national park fee (฿100 for children) in cash at the checkpoint past Na Dan pier. Songthaews wait at the pier, about ฿20 to ฿60 a person shared to Sai Kaew and Ao Phai, and ฿200 to ฿600 to charter one to the southern beaches.

By Car, With the Boat Included

Ban Phe is about 186 km from Ekkamai and 177 km from Suvarnabhumi, roughly two and a quarter hours by car. On 12Go, cars from central Bangkok or either airport to Na Dan pier with the boat included start at about ฿3,000 with a speedboat and about ฿3,400 for a sedan with a seat on the shared ferry, which is the easy way to do it with children or bags. A family arriving at Suvarnabhumi can be on the island about three hours after leaving the airport.

Koh Samet to Bangkok

Going back, the ferries leave Na Dan through the day, and the Cherdchai buses leave Ban Phe for Ekkamai at 12:00 and 14:00, so the late-morning boat is the one to catch. Combined boat-and-bus tickets back to Bangkok and the airports sell on 12Go and at the travel desks on the island.

For a flight, a car from Na Dan pier with the boat included is the safe choice, about three hours to Suvarnabhumi. I'd leave the island at least six hours before an international flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about bangkok to koh samet.

Take a bus or van to Ban Phe pier on the Rayong coast, then a boat to the island. Cherdchai's buses leave Ekkamai at 07:00, 09:00 and 11:00 for about ฿190 and take 3 to 4 hours, the ferry to Na Dan takes about 40 minutes, and combined bus-and-boat tickets cost about ฿350–670. A car with the boat included starts at about ฿3,000.

The wooden ferry from Ban Phe to Na Dan costs about ฿50–70 one way or ฿100–120 return and takes about 40 minutes. Shared speedboats cost about ฿200–500 a seat depending on the beach, and private charters about ฿1,800–3,000.

About 3.5 to 5 hours door to door. The road to Ban Phe is about 186 km, two and a quarter hours by car or 3 to 4 by bus, then 40 minutes on the ferry or 15 by speedboat.

Yes. The island is in a national park, and foreigners pay ฿200 per adult and ฿100 per child, in cash, at the checkpoint after the boat lands at Na Dan.

Koh Samet is the closest beach island you'd stay a few nights on, about 3.5 to 5 hours away by bus and boat. Koh Larn, off Pattaya, is closer to a day trip, and Koh Chang is a longer trip of 5 to 6 hours plus the ferry.

Ban Phe pier is about 81 km from Central Pattaya, a bit over an hour by car. A taxi or Grab gets you to the pier, then it's the same ferry or speedboat to the island.

The ferries run from the morning to the late afternoon, and sources disagree on the last one by an hour or two, so plan to be at Ban Phe by mid-afternoon. After the last ferry, a speedboat charter or a night in Ban Phe are the options.
