Koh Phangan in One Paragraph
Koh Phangan is an island of about 125 km² in the Gulf of Thailand, 15 km north of Koh Samui, and most people know it for one thing. The Full Moon Party fills Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach about thirteen times a year. The rest of the island runs at a different speed, with jungle hills in the middle, waterfalls and viewpoints, Thong Nai Pan's two quiet bays and Bottle Beach in the north, and a west coast of sunset beaches and yoga schools around Srithanu.
There's no airport, so you fly to Samui and take a boat for 20 to 50 minutes and ฿200–500. It's cheaper than Samui, at about ฿1,200 a day on a budget, and there's no Grab, so you ride songthaews or rent a scooter. Give it five nights, pick your coast before you book, and come between January and April, or in the Gulf's drier summer months.

Key Facts
Pick a coast, because they're different trips
Haad Rin in the southeast is the party. Thong Sala and Ban Tai on the south coast are the practical middle, the west coast is sunsets and yoga, and the north and northeast are the quiet bays.
Every route ends with a boat from Samui or the mainland
Boats from Samui take 20 to 50 minutes and cost ฿200–500, and most land at Thong Sala. Koh Tao is about an hour further on.
There's no Grab, and the hills are steep
Shared songthaews from Thong Sala cost ฿100–250 a person to most beaches and ฿400–600 a truck to Thong Nai Pan. Scooters rent for about ฿200–300 a day, but the roads to Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan are steep and rough.
Check the moon before you book a room
Around Full Moon dates, Haad Rin rooms sell out weeks ahead, most want three to five nights minimum, and prices can double or triple. The rest of the island barely notices.
Cheaper than Samui, and cash still matters
Plan on about ฿1,200 a day on a budget and ฿3,200 mid-range. There are ATMs at Thong Sala pier and in the main villages, but none at Bottle Beach.
January to April is best, and October to December is wet
The Gulf's rainy season peaks in November, with about 445 mm of rain at the Samui weather station. From June to August, when the Andaman coast is wet, Phangan is often the better beach.
Is Koh Phangan Worth Visiting?
Yes, and not only for the party. Phangan has better beaches than Samui for the price, a wild interior of waterfalls and viewpoints, and enough variety that a party crowd, yoga students and couples can share the island without seeing much of each other. It's also an easy add-on, half an hour by boat from Samui.
What puts people off is the reputation and the roads. Haad Rin on a Full Moon night is loud, crowded and messy, and if you book there by accident the island won't feel like the photos. The hills are steep, the scooter crash rate is real, and the best beaches in the north take a bumpy ride or a boat to reach.
Koh Samui or Koh Phangan? Samui for comfort, an airport, big resorts and easy days. Phangan for wilder beaches, lower prices and the party or a retreat. Many trips do both, staying on Samui first and taking the boat across for three or four nights.
Koh Phangan's Best Beaches
Ranked by how I'd pick a beach for a first visit. The north and northeast are the prettiest, the west has the sunsets, and Haad Rin has the party.
1. Thong Nai Pan, The northeast coast
The prettiest bays and the best resortsTwo horseshoe bays side by side, backed by jungle hills. Thong Nai Pan Noi, the northern one, has the island's smartest resorts, and Thong Nai Pan Yai is bigger and more like a village, with guesthouses and family resorts. The water is calm for most of the year. The catch is the drive, 45 to 60 minutes from Thong Sala over the hills.
2. Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat), The north coast
A beach with no roadA wide crescent of soft sand between jungle hills, with a few bungalows and beach restaurants. Most people come by longtail from Chaloklum, about 15 minutes and ฿100–150 a person, and a few walk the tough jungle trail from Haad Khom. There's no ATM or 7-Eleven, so bring cash. The climb to the viewpoint above the beach takes 30 to 45 minutes.
3. Haad Rin, The southeast tip
The Full Moon Party, and cheap rooms the rest of the monthHaad Rin Nok, or Sunrise Beach, is where the Full Moon Party happens. On other nights it's a pale-sand bay with clear water and some of the cheapest rooms on the island. Haad Rin Nai, on the other side of the peninsula, faces west and is much quieter.
4. Mae Haad and Koh Ma, The northwest tip
Snorkeling and the sandbarA quiet beach joined to the little island of Koh Ma by a sandbar you can wade across at low tide. The reef around Koh Ma is some of the best snorkeling you can reach from the beach on Phangan.
5. Haad Yao, The west coast
A long swim and the sunsetA long, west-facing beach with soft sand and shallow, clear water, lined with resorts and small restaurants. It has ATMs and enough food to stay a week without moving.
6. Zen Beach, Srithanu, the west coast
Sunset in the yoga villageA small, sheltered beach near Srithanu, the island's yoga and wellness village. It's calm enough for a proper swim, and most people turn up for the sunset.
7. Haad Khom, The north coast, next to Chaloklum
A quiet swim and snorkelA small, sheltered beach with calm, clear water, a short ride from the fishing village of Chaloklum. The tough trail to Bottle Beach starts here.
The Best Things to Do on Koh Phangan
Ordered by how much I'd prioritize them on a first visit of five nights.
1. A boat day in Ang Thong Marine Park, West of Koh Samui
The best day outA marine park of more than 40 limestone islands, with a viewpoint hike, the Emerald Lake, kayaking and snorkeling. Speedboat day trips from Phangan cost about ฿1,700–2,500, plus the ฿300 park fee (฿150 for children), which many operators collect in cash on the day.
2. Than Sadet waterfall and Haad Sadet, The east coast
History and a jungle riverA rocky river that runs down to a small beach, visited by several Thai kings, whose inscriptions are carved into the rocks. King Chulalongkorn came to the island 14 times. It's best after rain, because in the dry season the falls are a trickle.
3. Phaeng waterfall and the Domsila viewpoint, The center of the island
An easy jungle walkA shaded trail through the national park to a small waterfall and pool, with a steeper path on to the Domsila viewpoint over the west coast. Some park entrances charge about ฿100.
4. Phasawan Viewpoint, The north, above Bottle Beach
The view over the north coastA hilltop viewpoint about 20 minutes' walk through the jungle, looking out over the north coast and the Gulf. Go in the late afternoon.
5. Diving at Sail Rock, Between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao
The Gulf's best dive siteA pinnacle rising from the seabed in open water, with strong currents and big schools of fish. Dive schools in Chaloklum, Haad Yao and Thong Sala run trips there, and Koh Tao's schools go too.
6. The Saturday Walking Street in Thong Sala, Thong Sala
Street food and the island's weekly night outA street market of food stalls, crafts and clothes every Saturday from 17:00 to 22:00. On Sundays, Chaloklum's market opens from 16:00, and Pantip Market near the pier sells food until midnight every night.
7. A Thai cooking class, Thong Sala
A rainy morningSmall-group classes covering curries, pastes, soups and stir-fries, with dishes you can realistically cook at home.
8. Phangan Elephant Sanctuary, Inland from Thong Sala
Feeding and walking with elephantsA non-profit sanctuary caring for three elephants rescued from tourism work. Visits are about preparing their food, feeding them and walking alongside them.
Ang Thong and the Other Boat Trips
Ang Thong is the day trip to do if you only do one. The speedboats leave Phangan in the morning, stop for snorkeling and kayaking, climb to the viewpoint and the Emerald Lake, and get back in the late afternoon, for about ฿1,700–2,500 plus the ฿300 park fee.
The other good boat day is Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, an hour north, for snorkeling and the viewpoint over Nang Yuan's three islets and their sandbar, where the island charges ฿250 to land. Bottle Beach is a boat trip of its own, by longtail from Chaloklum.
Is Koh Phangan a Party Island?
Partly. The Full Moon Party happens about thirteen times a year on Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach, on the night of the full moon or the night after when that's a Buddhist holy day. Tens of thousands of people come, entry is about ฿100–200, and the Halfmoon and jungle parties near Ban Tai fill the weeks in between.
Away from Haad Rin and Ban Tai, the island is quiet, and most visitors never go to a party at all. If you're coming for the party, book a room in Haad Rin weeks ahead and expect a minimum stay. If you aren't, check the date and stay on the west or north coast. The dates, costs and safety rules are in our Full Moon Party guide.
How Many Days Do You Need on Koh Phangan?
Five nights suits most people. That gives you a day on the Ang Thong boat, a day in the north for Bottle Beach and the Phasawan viewpoint, a day for the waterfalls and Than Sadet, a beach day on your own coast, and a night for the party or the Saturday market.
Three nights is enough for a taste if you're combining it with Samui and Koh Tao. Plenty of people stay a month or more on the west coast for yoga or retreats.

Getting to Koh Phangan
Phangan has no airport, so every route ends with a boat. The quickest from Bangkok is a flight to Koh Samui, about an hour, then a ferry from one of Samui's piers to Thong Sala in 20 to 50 minutes for ฿200–500. The Haad Rin Queen sails straight to Haad Rin from Big Buddha pier. Which pier to use, and every sailing, is in our Koh Samui to Koh Phangan guide.
The cheaper way is overland. Fly or take the night train or bus to Surat Thani, then a bus-and-boat ticket to Phangan in 2.5 to 4.5 hours, or take Lomprayah's coach and catamaran from Bangkok through Chumphon and Koh Tao. From the Andaman coast, Lomprayah sells one-ticket boat-and-coach trips from Phangan to Krabi for ฿1,200 and Phuket for ฿1,400, and the same routes run the other way.

Getting Around Koh Phangan
There's no Grab, so the covered songthaew trucks that meet every boat at Thong Sala are the taxis. Shared rides cost about ฿100–200 a person to Haad Rin or Ban Tai (20 to 30 minutes) and ฿150–250 to Haad Yao or Chaloklum (30 to 40 minutes). Thong Nai Pan is 45 to 60 minutes and about ฿400–600 for the whole truck. Most resorts will meet your boat if you tell them the time.
Scooters rent for about ฿200–300 a day and are how most people get around, but I'd only ride one if you already ride at home. The hills are steep, many roads are unlit, the tracks to Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan are rough, and the island's hospital sees crashes every day. Serious cases go to Samui.
Money and Costs on Koh Phangan
Phangan is one of the cheaper Thai islands. On my numbers, a budget day runs about ฿1,200 and a mid-range day about ฿3,200, roughly ฿400 a day less than Samui on a budget. Full Moon dates are the exception, when Haad Rin rooms can double or triple and want a minimum stay.
There are ATMs at Thong Sala pier, in the main villages and at Haad Yao. Carry cash for songthaews, longtails, park fees and Bottle Beach, which has no ATM.
When to Go
January to April is the best time, with calm seas and little rain. February is the driest month, with about 64 mm at the Samui weather station, and April about 83 mm. December and January are the busiest and priciest, so book rooms early.
June to August is a good second choice, when the Andaman coast is in its monsoon and the Gulf gets showers rather than storms. October to December is the Gulf's rainy season, wettest in November with about 445 mm, when the sea can be rough. If those are your months, the Andaman islands, such as Koh Lanta, are the better bet from November.
Plan the rest of the trip.
