Koh Samui vs Koh Phangan: which is better for your trip?

Koh Samui for comfort and an airport; Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party at one end and yoga-retreat calm at the other. Phangan is cheaper and wilder, half an hour away, and the better island if you don't need a resort.

Why I'd choose that way

Samui is the developed one, with an airport (Bangkok Airways), Chaweng's beach clubs, Bophut's Fisherman's Village, destination spas, and Ang Thong Marine Park by boat. It costs more (about ฿1,600 a day on a budget) and its crowds peak in July, August and December.

Phangan carries two reputations that barely overlap on the map. Haad Rin, in the southeast, is the Full Moon Party. The west and north coasts are among the calmest places in Thailand, with Sritanu's yoga and wellness scene, Thong Nai Pan's twin bays, Bottle Beach reachable only by boat or a jungle hike, Than Sadet waterfall. Sail Rock, the Gulf's best dive site, is offshore. Choosing your coast is choosing your vacation.

They share the Gulf calendar, driest from February to April and wet October to December on both. There's no airport on Phangan; you fly to Samui and take the boat.

Is Koh Phangan cheaper than Koh Samui?

Yes, about ฿1,200 a day on a budget against ฿1,600, and ฿3,200 against ฿4,500 mid-range. Full Moon Party nights are the exception, when Haad Rin rooms sell out.

Is Koh Phangan only for partying?

No. Haad Rin is one corner. The west coast (Sritanu) is a wellness hub and the north (Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach) is as quiet as the Gulf gets. Stay away from Haad Rin and you may never see the party.

Can I do the Full Moon Party from Samui?

Yes, boats run late on party nights, but it's easier to stay on Phangan and book well ahead for those dates. The crossing back at dawn is the worst part.

Which is better for families?

Samui, for its airport, hospitals, resorts and calm north-coast beaches. Phangan's Thong Nai Pan works for families who don't mind a boat and a bumpy road.
