Koh Mak Travel Guide

A flat, quiet island of coconut palms and bungalows between Koh Chang and Koh Kood

By Mac Kiley · 10 min read · Updated Oct 28, 2026

Koh Mak is a small, flat island in Trat province, between Koh Chang and Koh Kood, and it's the easiest of the three to settle into. Most of it is coconut and rubber plantation, still owned by five families descended from the man who bought the island in 1904, and the resorts sit along two main beaches, Ao Kao in the southwest and Ao Soun Yai in the northwest, with no high-rises and hardly any cars.

You get around by scooter, bicycle or golf cart, swim in calm water from November to April, and take a boat across to the white sand of Koh Kham. Boonsiri's catamaran reaches it from Bang Bao on Koh Chang in an hour for ฿550, and speedboats run from the Trat coast in about 50 minutes. I'd give it three nights, and I'd stay rather than day-trip, because the quiet is the point.

Key Facts

No airport, no car ferry

Every trip ends on a boat to Ao Nid pier or a resort pier, from Laem Ngop or Laem Sok on the Trat coast, from Bang Bao on Koh Chang, or from Ao Salad on Koh Kood.

About six hours from Bangkok on one ticket

Boonsiri's bus and catamaran leaves Khao San at 05:00 and lands on Koh Mak at 11:15 for ฿1,150, with later departures at 07:00 and 09:00.

Bring a license or ride a bicycle

There's no public bus. Scooters cost about ฿250–350 a day, bicycles ฿100–200 and golf carts about ฿800–1,500, and songthaew taxis charge ฿50 a person with a ฿100 minimum.

Bring cash

There's one ATM and it isn't reliable, there's no 7-Eleven, and most restaurants and bars take cash only. Withdraw what you need in Trat or on Koh Chang.

November to April

The Trat station records 85 mm of rain in November and 28 mm in December. From June to September it's one of the wettest places in Thailand, and fewer boats run.

Quiet nights

A few beach bars on Ao Kao stay open late, and that's the nightlife. Come for the beach, the bike rides and the sunsets.

How to Get to Koh Mak

Koh Mak has no airport and no car ferry, so you arrive by boat, and where you start decides which one. From the mainland, the boats leave two piers on the Trat coast. Laem Ngop, the small port town southwest of Trat, has the speedboats from the Kromluang pier, which is a different pier from the Koh Chang car ferry at Ao Thammachat. Laem Sok, farther down the coast, is Boonsiri's catamaran pier for Koh Mak and Koh Kood.

From Bangkok, the easy way is a through ticket. Boonsiri's bus and catamaran leaves Khao San Road at 05:00, 07:00 and 09:00 and lands at Ao Nid pier at 11:15, 15:15 and 16:15 for ฿1,150, with pickups at Suvarnabhumi at 05:30 and 09:00 for the same fare. The 05:00 is the one I'd take, because it gives you the whole afternoon on the island. The cheaper way is the bus from Ekkamai to Trat, from 05:00 for about ฿315, then a songthaew to the pier, but you'll spend most of the day connecting.

To fly, Bangkok Airways goes from Suvarnabhumi to Trat, and its 08:10 and 12:45 flights meet Boonsiri's vans to the pier, which reach Koh Mak at 11:15 and 16:15 for ฿1,000 from the airport. From Pattaya, Boonsiri's 08:30 bus reaches Koh Mak at 16:15 for ฿1,150.

Children 100–130 cm pay ฿350 on the Laem Ngop boats. Confirm the day before, because the sea decides.

From Koh Chang and Koh Kood

Koh Mak sits in the middle of the Trat islands, so it's an easy stop between the other two. From Koh Chang, Boonsiri's catamaran leaves Bang Bao pier, at the island's southern tip, at 09:00 and 13:00 and reaches Ao Nid an hour later for ฿550, and it can collect you from your Koh Chang hotel. In high season a speedboat also leaves Kai Bae beach at 09:00 and drops you at the Makathanee pier on Ao Kao about an hour later. Going back, Boonsiri leaves Koh Mak at 11:30 and 15:15 and lands at Bang Bao an hour later.

From Koh Kood, Boonsiri leaves Ao Salad pier at 11:00 and 14:45 and reaches Koh Mak 30 minutes later for ฿400, and the boats the other way leave Ao Nid at 10:00 and 14:00. That timetable runs from 1 October to 31 May. From June to September Boonsiri cuts to one sailing a day between the islands, and some agencies say the Koh Chang boats stop altogether, so confirm it with Boonsiri before you plan around it.

Koh Mak's Beaches

The two main beaches face different ways, so pick by what you want at 18:00, a bar on the sand or the sunset over Koh Kham.

  1. 1. Ao Kao, Southwest coast

    Best base

The long beach on the southwest side, with calm, shallow water and most of the island's places to stay, eat and drink behind it. The western end, where it's also called Ao Baan Yai, has the hostels, the bars and the cafés, so it's the easiest place to stay without a scooter.

  2. 2. Ao Soun Yai, Northwest coast

    Sunsets and swimming

Almost 2 km of sand on the northwest coast, facing Koh Kham, with the sunset over the water and calm swimming in season. Koh Mak Resort's pier is here, and it's where the boats to Koh Kham leave from.

  3. 3. Koh Kham, Off the northwest coast

    The prettiest sand

A small island a few minutes off Ao Soun Yai, with white sand, black rocks, clear water and the ruins of an old resort. There's nowhere to stay on it. See the boat and the fee below.

Things to Do on Koh Mak

Koh Mak is a beach-and-bicycle island, and most days are a swim, a ride and a long lunch. Here's what I'd fit around that.

Take the boat to Koh Kham

The half day everyone does. Boats leave from Koh Mak Resort on Ao Soun Yai, take about 10 minutes and cost about ฿350 a person for the return trip, the island's entry and a soft drink, with the last boat back around 16:00 to 16:30. Only drinks are sold on Koh Kham, so bring lunch, and take your rubbish back with you. In calm water you can also rent a kayak and paddle across in about half an hour.

Ride round the island

Koh Mak is flat, and you can cross it by scooter in 15 to 20 minutes, which makes it one of the few Thai islands that's pleasant on a bicycle. A loop takes in Cape Tukata, a free viewpoint with a pebble beach, the Cinnamon Boardwalk at Ao Tan, Ao Nid's pier and village, and Somchai's Love Garden, a hand-made folk-art garden that's free to wander. Fuel is sold in bottles from the shops, so fill up before you head for the far side.

Snorkel around Koh Rang

The best reefs nearby are in Mu Ko Chang National Park around Koh Rang, about 20 minutes by boat from Ao Nid. Koh Mak Divers runs half-day snorkeling trips for about ฿1,200 a person with the park fee, gear and lunch included, and dive trips for more. Koh Mak itself is outside the park, but trips to Koh Rang pay its ฿200 fee, so check whether your price includes it.

A drink on the Blue Pearl pier at sunset

Blue Pearl Bar sits at the end of the pier at Koh Mak Cococape, at Ao Pra between Ao Kao and Ao Soun Yai. It costs about ฿200 to walk out on the pier, with a soft drink included. It's open 09:00 to 21:00, and I'd time it for the last hour of light.

The Koh Mak Museum and the temple at Ao Nid

The small community museum near Ao Nid tells the story of the plantation families and the island's fishing life, and it's free. Its posted hours are 10:30 to 20:00, but at least one visitor found them wrong, so ask your resort first. Koh Mak Temple, with its dragon staircase, is a few minutes away. Cover your shoulders and knees.

Seafood on the water at Ao Nid

Koh Mak Seafood is on Ao Nid bay by the pier, open 10:30 to 20:30, and it's the island's best-known restaurant, so book ahead in busy weeks. On Ao Kao, Food Art Hut, Dum Noodle and the cafés along the beach road cover the rest.

Getting Around Koh Mak

There's no car ferry and no public bus, so there are few cars on the roads and you'll get around on two wheels or four small ones. Scooters cost about ฿250–350 a day, bicycles about ฿100–200 and often less at your resort, and golf carts about ฿800–1,500 a day. The carts sell out first in high season, so book one with your room if you want one. If you ride a scooter, you need a motorcycle license for your insurance to cover you.

Songthaew taxis meet the boats and run on request. They charge about ฿50 a person a drop with a ฿100 minimum, and more after 22:00, and most resorts will collect you from the pier if you tell them which boat you're on.

Where to Stay on Koh Mak, Beach by Beach

There are no chain hotels. Ao Kao has the most choice and the bars, Ao Soun Yai the sunsets, and the east coast is quieter and closer to Ao Nid pier.

When to Go to Koh Mak

Koh Mak follows the Koh Chang calendar, which is closer to the Andaman coast's than to Samui's. November to April is the season. The Trat weather station records 85 mm of rain on seven days in November, 28 mm on two in December and 51 mm in January, with highs around 32°C, calm seas and every boat running. December and January are the busiest, and the Christmas and New Year weeks book out first. March and April are hotter, with the rain starting to build.

From May the monsoon arrives, and June to September is one of the wettest stretches in Thailand, with 777 mm in June and 1,024 mm on 25 days in July at Trat. The sea gets rough on the open crossings, the speedboats run fewer trips, the island boats cut back to one a day, and some resorts close. October is the shoulder, at 338 mm, with the boats coming back. If you can only come in the rains, take Boonsiri's bigger catamaran rather than a small speedboat.

Costs on Koh Mak

Getting there is the biggest cost after your room, about ฿550 each way from the Trat coast or Koh Chang and ฿1,150 on a through ticket from Bangkok. On the island, budget about ฿250–350 a day for a scooter, ฿350 for the Koh Kham trip and about ฿1,200 for a half-day snorkel to Koh Rang. Rooms run from hostel beds on Ao Kao to beachfront villas, and the hotel search on this page shows prices for your dates.

Bring enough cash for the whole stay. The one ATM isn't reliable, there's no 7-Eleven, and the smaller places take cash only.

Koh Mak, Koh Kood or Koh Chang?

Koh Chang is the big, developed one, with the most hotels, restaurants and nightlife, a car ferry and hills. Koh Kood is larger and hillier than Koh Mak, with waterfalls and the prettiest bays. Koh Mak is the small, flat, easy one, best if you want to cycle, swim and do very little. Boonsiri's boats link all three, so a week can split Koh Chang with three nights here, or come down the chain from Koh Chang to Koh Mak to Koh Kood.

Is Koh Mak Worth Visiting?

Yes, if you want a quiet beach island that's simple to get around. There are no big sights, the nightlife is a few beach bars, and the reefs worth the name are a boat ride away at Koh Rang. But the water is calm and clear in season, the island is flat enough to explore on a bicycle, and an afternoon on Koh Kham is as pretty as anything in the Gulf. I'd give it three nights, two if you're passing between Koh Chang and Koh Kood, and I'd skip it from June to September.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Koh Mak Travel Guide.

By boat. Speedboats leave Laem Ngop's Kromluang pier near Trat, about 50 minutes for ฿550, and Boonsiri's catamaran leaves Laem Sok pier and Bang Bao on Koh Chang for ฿550. From Bangkok, Boonsiri's bus and catamaran leaves Khao San at 05:00 and lands at 11:15 for ฿1,150.

Boonsiri's catamaran leaves Bang Bao pier at 09:00 and 13:00 and reaches Ao Nid an hour later for ฿550, and in high season a speedboat leaves Kai Bae at 09:00. From June to September there's one sailing a day at most, so confirm it.

Koh Kood for bigger, prettier bays, waterfalls and more places to stay. Koh Mak for a small, flat island you can explore by bicycle, with two easy beaches and Koh Kham offshore. The boat between them takes 30 minutes, so you can do both.

Yes. Boonsiri's 09:00 from Bang Bao arrives at 10:00 and the 15:15 back lands at 16:15, which gives you about five hours. I'd stay at least a night, because the island is at its best in the evening.

Three nights covers a Koh Kham day, a ride round the island, a snorkel trip to Koh Rang and some time doing nothing. Two works if you're passing between Koh Chang and Koh Kood.

There's one, and it isn't reliable. Most places take cash only and there's no 7-Eleven, so bring enough for your stay from Trat or Koh Chang.

By scooter (about ฿250–350 a day), bicycle (about ฿100–200) or golf cart (about ฿800–1,500). Songthaew taxis charge about ฿50 a person with a ฿100 minimum. There's no public bus.

About ฿350 a person from Koh Mak Resort on Ao Soun Yai, for the return boat, the island's entry and a soft drink. The crossing takes about 10 minutes and the last boat back leaves around 16:00 to 16:30.

November to April, when the Trat station records under 100 mm of rain a month from November to February and the boats all run. June to September is very wet, with 1,024 mm in July, and fewer boats.

A little. A few bars on Ao Kao stay open late, and Blue Pearl Bar on the Cococape pier is the sunset spot, but most of the island is asleep early. For nightlife, Koh Chang has much more.
