Hong Island (Koh Hong), Krabi

A lagoon inside the cliffs and a 360-degree view, 6 km off Ao Nang

By Mac Kiley · 10 min read · Updated Oct 31, 2026

Hong Island, or Koh Hong, is the Krabi island I'd pick for a single boat day if the 4 Islands feel too obvious. It's the largest of a small group of limestone islands about 6 km off the coast north of Ao Nang, inside Than Bok Khorani National Park, and a boat gets you there in 20 to 45 minutes from Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara or Railay. Hong means room in Thai, and the room is a lagoon walled in by cliffs, which boats enter through a single gap when the tide allows.

Outside it there's a white-sand beach with snorkeling, and a steel staircase of 419 steps climbs 109 m to a 360-degree viewpoint. Shared tours cost ฿1,200–1,400, a whole longtail from the Ao Nang beach board about ฿3,000, and the ฿300 park fee is extra and paid in cash. There's nowhere to stay, so it's a day trip. This is Krabi's Koh Hong, not the Koh Hong in Phang Nga Bay that Phuket's canoe tours visit.

Key Facts

20 to 45 minutes by boat

Boats leave from Ao Nang beach, Nopparat Thara pier and Railay, and most tours collect you from hotels in Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Klong Muang and Tubkaek. Speedboats are the quick end of that range and longtails the slow end.

Tours from about ฿1,200

Shared longtails and speedboats cost ฿1,200–1,400 a person with lunch and snorkel gear. A whole longtail from the boat board on Ao Nang beach is about ฿3,000, give or take ฿500, for up to six people.

฿300 park fee, in cash

Foreign adults pay ฿300 and children ฿150 to Than Bok Khorani National Park, usually on top of the tour price. Keep the ticket with you for the whole day.

419 steps to the top

The viewpoint staircase climbs 109 m in 239 m of steps, with six rest areas on the way. Allow 15 to 45 minutes up, depending on the heat and your legs. It's open 08:30 to 16:30.

The lagoon follows the tide

Boats get in through one narrow opening when there's enough water over it. At very low tide it's too shallow, which is why kayak-included tours are the surest way inside.

December to April

The Phuket weather station, the nearest long record, has 24 mm of rain in February and 82 mm in December. September and October bring about 350 mm a month and canceled boats on the roughest days.

Which Hong Island? Krabi's, Not Phang Nga Bay's

Two islands go by Koh Hong, and tour listings mix them up. This page is the one off Krabi, in Than Bok Khorani National Park, with a beach you can land on, a lagoon boats and kayaks enter, and the 360-degree viewpoint. It's reached from Ao Nang, Railay and Nopparat Thara, or in about 20 minutes by longtail from Koh Yao Noi.

The other Koh Hong is in Phang Nga Bay, inside Ao Phang Nga National Park, on the James Bond Island tours that leave Phuket's east coast. There's no beach stop and no viewpoint. A guide paddles you in an inflatable canoe through low sea caves into the hongs, with Koh Panak as the other canoe island, and my Phang Nga Bay guide covers that day. If a Phuket tour says Hong Island and includes James Bond Island or Koh Panyee, it means Phang Nga's. If it lists Lao Lading, Pak Bia and the viewpoint, it means Krabi's.

How to Get to Hong Island

Almost everyone goes from Ao Nang. The shared speedboats leave from Nopparat Thara pier at the north end of Ao Nang Beach, and the longtails leave from the beach itself, where the booths sell seats on group boats and whole boats by the day. Tours that collect you from Krabi Town, Klong Muang or Tubkaek drive you to the same departure points first. From Railay, longtails and some speedboat tours pick up at the floating pier.

The crossing takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the boat and the sea. A shared speedboat day such as Sea Eagle's runs from 09:15 to 15:30, and with hotel pickup most Hong days take six to nine hours door to door. Half-day longtail trips of four to five hours are sold too.

From Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, the islands sit about 7 km away and a longtail from Koh Yao Noi takes about 20 minutes, which is why both of my Koh Yao guides suggest going early, before the Krabi boats arrive. From Phuket it's about 30 km from the nearest port, so it's a long speedboat day or a charter, and several Phuket tours sold as Hong Island are really the Phang Nga Bay trip.

Shared prices are what Ao Nang operators list on their own pages, and the beach-board price is what travelers report paying. Add the ฿300 park fee (฿150 for children) unless the tour says it's included, and bring it in cash. Tours run all year, and the sea decides the program on rough days.

Which Hong Island Tour I'd Book

For two people I'd book a shared tour with a kayak included, about ฿1,395 by speedboat. Some boats reach the lagoon entrance and then wait outside it when the water is low, and the kayak is the version that gets you in either way. It's also the quietest way to see it, because the engines stay outside.

For three to six people, I'd walk to the boat board on Ao Nang beach and hire a whole longtail for about ฿3,000. Split four ways it's cheaper than a shared tour, and you choose the time. I'd leave early enough to be climbing the viewpoint soon after it opens at 08:30, ahead of the group boats that arrive from about 08:30 to 09:00. Bring your own lunch and water, since a beach-board boat doesn't include them. If you'd rather not haggle, a private longtail booked ahead with transfers is about ฿5,290 for the boat.

The Stops on a Hong Islands Day

Most tours stop at four or five places in the group. Koh Hong itself holds three of them, and the order depends on the tide.

  1. 1. Hong Lagoon, Koh Hong

    The reason to go

The lagoon inside Koh Hong is a wide pool of green water enclosed by limestone cliffs, with one natural opening in the rock as the way in and out. Boats and kayaks queue at the gap, and most tours give you 20 to 30 minutes inside. Whether your boat gets in depends on the tide, the sea and the boatman.

    When to go
When the tide is high enough over the entrance. The kayak gets you in when the boat can't.
  2. 2. View Point Hong Island, Koh Hong

    The view

The 360-degree platform at the top of Koh Hong's cliff, 419 steps and 109 m above the beach. From the top you see the lagoon cut into the island below you and the other islands of the group, with Phi Phi on a clear day.

    When to go
From 08:30, before the group boats, or in the afternoon before the 16:30 close.
    View Point Hong Island
    View Point Hong Island

    4.9(828)Daily 08:30–16:30

  3. 3. Koh Hong beach, Koh Hong

    Swimming and snorkeling

The curved white-sand beach on the outside of the island, reached by a long floating pier. A big rock splits it in two, and the part between the rock and the cliffs is the better swim. Snorkeling is off the reef nearby. There's a park shop, a restaurant, a drinks stand and toilets, with prices above the mainland's, and a nature trail of about 400 m.

    When to go
At higher tide, when the swimming and snorkeling are best.
  4. 4. Koh Lao Lading, Hong group

    The lunch stop

A small island with a jetty and a short walk between limestone cliffs to a beach, where many tours stop for lunch. It has a snack bar and toilets.

    When to go
    Midday on most tours.
  5. 5. Koh Pak Bia, Hong group

    A quieter swim

A tiny island with no jetty or facilities. At low tide a sandbar can appear off it. The landing is rocky, so water shoes help, and a dry bag keeps your phone safe.

    When to go
When the tide uncovers the sandbar.

The Hong Island Viewpoint

The viewpoint is a steel and wooden staircase of 419 steps up Koh Hong's cliff, finished in 2020, which climbs 109 m over 239 m of steps to a platform with a full 360-degree view. There are six rest areas on the way up, and it also serves as the island's tsunami evacuation route. Fit visitors report 15 to 20 minutes up and others closer to 45, and the steep sections are in full sun, so I'd carry water and wear shoes with grip, since the steps get slippery after rain.

It's open from 08:30 to 16:30. The view is the shape of the island that you can't see from the boat, the lagoon cut into the rock below and the karst islands of Krabi and Phang Nga spread out around it. On a group tour the stop at Koh Hong is often about two hours, enough for the climb and a swim, but ask before you book, because the cheapest tours sometimes give it less.

Hong Lagoon and the Tide

The lagoon is the one stop the tide controls. The opening is narrow and shallow, so boats can only go through when there's enough water over it, and at very low tide the channel is too shallow to enter. Operators plan the order of the stops around the tide table, which is why the same tour runs in a different order on different days, and why some boats wait outside the gap and let you look in.

Tides here follow the moon, not the clock, so a morning on one day is a low tide on another. Check a Krabi tide table for your date, or ask the operator whether the boat will enter the lagoon. If it matters to you, book a version with a kayak, or swim in only where the guide says it's safe, since the water gets deep near the cliffs.

Park Fee, Hours and Rules

Koh Hong belongs to Than Bok Khorani National Park, and foreign visitors pay ฿300 for adults and ฿150 for children, with Thai visitors paying ฿60 and ฿30. Most shared tours collect it in cash on the day or have you pay at the island, and the boat, kayaks, lunch and snorkel gear aren't part of it. Keep the ticket on you for the whole day.

The park's service areas, including the viewpoint, are open from 08:30 to 16:30. As in most Thai national parks, alcohol and drones aren't allowed. There's no accommodation on Koh Hong, and the park asks anyone who wants to stay overnight in the park to contact it in advance, so I'd treat Hong as a day trip and sleep in Ao Nang, Railay or Klong Muang.

The Sea Around Hong Island, Month by Month

MonthsRain at PhuketWhat to expect
December to March24–82 mm, 2–8 rain daysCalm, clear water and the busiest boats. February is the driest month.
April135 mm, 10 rain daysStill good, hot, with the rain starting to build.
May to August237–309 mm, 16–17 rain daysFewer boats and lower prices. Rough days cancel tours.
September and October336–350 mm, 19 rain daysThe wettest months and the most cancellations.
November178 mm, 13 rain daysThe shoulder month, calmer as it goes on.

Rainfall is the Phuket weather station's monthly normal, about 50 km across the bay and within a few percent of Koh Lanta's. No source I read says the Hong Islands close for a season. Operators decide by the day.

Hong Island or the 4 Islands Tour?

The 4 Islands tour is the shorter, cheaper first boat day, 15 to 20 minutes out of Ao Nang, ฿750–1,200 plus a ฿200 park fee, with the Thale Waek sandbar walk at low tide and Phra Nang Cave Beach at the end. Hong Island is a little farther and costs ฿1,200–1,400 plus ฿300, and what you get for it is scenery, the enclosed lagoon and the climb to the viewpoint. If I had one day I'd do Hong. With two clear days I'd do both, or book a private speedboat that combines them.

Against Phi Phi, Hong wins on ease. A Phi Phi day is 45 minutes to an hour each way by speedboat, ฿1,300–1,600 plus a ฿400 park fee, and you share Maya Bay with a lot of boats, while Maya itself closes every year from 1 August to 30 September. Phi Phi has the bigger names. Hong is the closer, calmer day.

What I'd Skip

I'd skip any Hong tour that doesn't say how long it stops at Koh Hong, since the viewpoint and the swim need about two hours between them. I'd skip a boat day in September and October unless the forecast is clear, because those are the months most tours cancel. And I wouldn't book a Phuket tour sold as Hong Island if the lagoon and the viewpoint are what you want, unless it lists Lao Lading or Pak Bia, since most of those are the Phang Nga Bay canoe trip.

Is Hong Island Worth Visiting?

Yes, if you're in Krabi between December and April and you only have time for one island day. The lagoon and the viewpoint are things the 4 Islands tour doesn't have, the crossing is short, and for a small group a whole longtail from the beach costs little more than seats on a shared boat. Time the lagoon to the tide, go early or late for the viewpoint, and carry ฿300 in cash per adult.
