Phuket vs Phi Phi Islands: which is better for your trip?

Phuket to stay, Phi Phi to visit. The islands are the Andaman's postcard, but they're crowded, pricey and boat-only. Sleep on Phi Phi for a night or two if you want the bays after the day-trippers leave; base yourself on Phuket for everything else.

Why I'd choose that way

Phi Phi is two karst islands rising from glassy water, with Maya Bay on uninhabited Phi Phi Leh (no swimming, capped numbers, since its recovery), the twin-bay viewpoint above Tonsai, Pi Leh lagoon, Long Beach's dawn sharks, and the wall dives at the Bida islets. All the beds are on Phi Phi Don, most of them in Tonsai, which is dense, walkable, and split between dive shops and fire shows. It's crowded, especially December to February.

Phuket is the base the whole coast runs from, with more than 30 beaches, Old Town, an international airport, and the widest choice of hotels. It doesn't lose its ferries to the monsoon the way Phi Phi's crossings do from May to October.

Costs are similar on paper (about ฿1,500 a day on a budget in both), but Phi Phi has no cheap way to do anything, because everything arrives by boat.

Phuket or Phi Phi Islands? Questions people ask

Is it better to stay on Phi Phi or do a day trip from Phuket?

A day trip shows you the bays in a crowd; a night or two shows you them empty at dawn and dusk. If you can spare two nights and don't mind Tonsai's noise, stay. If not, the day trip is still worth it.

Is Phi Phi expensive?

For what you get, yes. Daily budgets are similar to Phuket (about ฿1,500), but rooms are smaller, food costs more and there's no budget transport, because there is no transport.

Can you swim at Maya Bay?

No. Since the reopening, boats moor at a pontoon on the back of the island, visitors walk through to the beach, and swimming in the bay is banned so the reef and blacktip sharks can keep recovering.

How do I get from Phuket to Phi Phi?

From Rassada pier, about two hours by ferry (฿500 to 700) or one by speedboat (฿750 to 850). Boats run all year, but the sea is rougher from May to October.
