Koh Phangan vs Koh Tao: which is better for your trip?
Koh Tao to learn to dive, Koh Phangan for everything else, including beaches with a choice of moods, the Full Moon Party and yoga at Sritanu. Both are cheap by island standards, and they're about an hour apart by boat.

- Getting a dive certification is the point, with some of the cheapest reputable courses anywhere
- A small, steep, social island where the day runs on dive boats
- Koh Nang Yuan's sandbar and easy snorkel bays off the sand
Why I'd choose that way
Koh Tao is one of the world's busiest places to learn to dive. Dive schools line Sairee and Mae Haad, courses cost roughly half what they do elsewhere, and the sites are good for a training island, with turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock for the odd whale shark. Above water it's small, steep and pretty, with Koh Nang Yuan just offshore and quiet east-coast bays.
Phangan is bigger and more varied, with Haad Rin's Full Moon Party at one end, Sritanu's yoga scene on the west coast, Thong Nai Pan's twin bays and Bottle Beach in the north, waterfalls in the interior. Sail Rock is a day trip from here too. Its crowds run higher than Tao's; daily costs are the same, about ฿1,200 on a budget.
Same weather. October to December is the wet season on both, with November the month to avoid on Tao. Neither has an airport; Samui's is the gateway for both.

Doing both Koh Phangan and Koh Tao
Nearly every Samui to Tao boat calls at Phangan, so the hop is about an hour by catamaran. Do Phangan first if the party or a retreat has fixed dates, Tao first if the course does.

Koh Phangan or Koh Tao? Questions people ask
Is Koh Tao cheaper than Koh Phangan?
Daily costs are the same, about ฿1,200 on a budget and ฿3,200 mid-range. The difference is what you spend on, a dive course on Tao versus party nights or a retreat on Phangan.
Can I learn to dive on Koh Phangan instead?
There are dive shops on Phangan and Sail Rock is closer to it, but Tao has dozens of schools, lower course prices and the training sites on its doorstep. Learn on Tao.
Which is better for non-divers?
Phangan, for beaches and range. Tao still works for snorkelers (Shark Bay, Tanote, Koh Nang Yuan) and viewpoint hikes, but the island's rhythm is the dive boats.
How do I get between them?
Catamarans and ferries run several times a day, about an hour. Most Samui to Tao boats stop at Phangan on the way.
