Why go, and how to do it well
Phi Phi Don is the big, inhabited island of the Phi Phi group and the one you sleep on. Its shape is the famous view, two bays almost meeting in the middle, Tonsai on the south side and Loh Dalum on the north, joined by the low, palm-covered sandbar where the village sits. Ferries from Phuket's Rassada Pier and Krabi's Klong Jilad Pier take about two hours to Tonsai Pier, and there are no roads or cars, so you walk or take a longtail.
Tonsai village has the pier, the cheapest rooms, the dive shops and most of the restaurants, and Loh Dalum is the nightlife, with fire shows and beach bars running until 1 or 2 in the morning. The viewpoint, a 20 to 30 minute climb from the village for ฿30–50, is where the postcard over the twin bays is taken, best around 6pm. Long Beach, a ฿100–150 longtail ride from the village, has quieter nights and the best sand, and Laem Tong at the far northern tip has a handful of upscale resorts 30 to 40 minutes away by longtail.
Most of the boat trips start here, including the circuit of Phi Phi Leh to the south for Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, with a ฿400 national park fee on top. Come between November and April for the calmest seas, and stay two nights if you can, because the island is at its best early in the morning and after the day boats leave.

I joined a tour to Phi Phi Don Island and it was absolutely amazing. We were lucky with perfect weather, which made the whole trip even more beautiful. The tour included visits to four different islands, and the views at each stop were breathtaking – crystal-clear water, white sandy beaches, and stunning limestone cliffs. Lunch was included and surprisingly good for the price, making this tour a great value. One tip: if you get seasick easily, be sure to take motion sickness medicine beforehand, as the boat ride can get bumpy. Overall, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Thailand. I’d definitely love to come back and experience it all over again!
