Gulf islands · the resort island and the diving island

Koh Samui vs Koh Tao: which is better for your trip?

Koh Samui for comfort, an airport and a week of easy beach days; Koh Tao to learn to dive and for the best snorkeling in the Gulf. The fast boat between them takes 1.5 to 2 hours, so most trips that want both simply do both.

Pick Koh Samui if…

  • You want to fly in and be on the beach the same afternoon
  • A family trip, or a resort with a pool and a spa
  • Long sandy beaches with restaurants behind them

Pick Koh Tao if…

  • Getting your Open Water certification, for about ฿11,000 to 12,500
  • Snorkeling with turtles and blacktip reef sharks off the beach
  • A small, social island where the day runs on the dive boats

Why I'd choose that way

Koh Samui is the Gulf's resort island, with an airport about an hour from Bangkok, Chaweng's beach clubs and the Green Mango bar zone, Lamai, Bophut's Fisherman's Village, calm north-coast beaches at Maenam and Choeng Mon, destination spas, and Ang Thong Marine Park for the boat day. It costs about ฿1,600 a day on a budget and ฿4,500 mid-range.

Koh Tao is small and steep, about 21 km² of granite boulders and pocket bays. It's one of the world's busiest places to learn to dive, with dozens of schools on the west coast and an Open Water course for about ฿11,000 to 12,500, often with a room included. Sairee's 1.85 km is the only long beach. The rest are coves down steep roads, and the snorkeling off them is the best in the Gulf. A budget day runs about ฿1,200.

They share the Gulf calendar, best from February to September and wet from October to December, wettest in November. That matters more on Tao, where the boats can be rough or canceled and dive visibility drops.

Koh Samui vs Koh Tao, category by category

Koh Samui takes getting there, beaches, nightlife, families and getting around. Koh Tao takes diving, snorkeling and cost.

Getting there

Koh Samui wins

Koh Samui, with its own airport about an hour's flight from Bangkok. Koh Tao is boat-only. From Samui it's 1.5 to 2 hours by fast boat, and from Bangkok, Lomprayah's night bus and catamaran through Chumphon arrives at 08:45 for ฿1,250.

Beaches

Koh Samui wins

Koh Samui, for long sand with everything behind it, at Chaweng, Lamai and the calm north coast. Koh Tao isn't a long-beach island. Sairee's 1.85 km is the one big stretch, and the rest are small coves you reach down steep roads or by boat.

Diving

Koh Tao wins

Koh Tao. Its more than 25 dive sites include shallow, sheltered training spots and the deep pinnacles, Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock, both down to about 45 m, where whale sharks turn up. An Open Water course takes three to four days for about ฿11,000 to 12,500.

Snorkeling

Koh Tao wins

Koh Tao, which has the best snorkeling off the beaches in the Gulf. People swim with turtles and small blacktip reef sharks at Shark Bay early in the morning, Aow Leuk has coral straight off a small beach, and Koh Nang Yuan's sandbar costs ฿250 to land.

Nightlife

Koh Samui wins

Koh Samui, with Chaweng's beach clubs by day and Soi Green Mango and Soi Reggae at night, plus fire shows at Fisherman's Village. Tao's nights center on Sairee, with beach bars, fire shows and pub crawls full of dive students.

Families

Koh Samui wins

Koh Samui, for the airport, the resorts with pools and the calm, shallow north-coast beaches at Maenam and Choeng Mon. Koh Tao's steep roads and small coves make it harder work with young children.

Getting around

Koh Samui wins

Koh Samui, where a ring road circles the island and Grab works on it. Koh Tao's roads are very steep concrete, with sand and gravel on the turns, so most people use the pickup-truck taxis and taxi boats, about ฿150 to 200 from Mae Haad to Tanote.

Cost

Koh Tao wins

Koh Tao, at about ฿1,200 a day on a budget against ฿1,600 on Samui, and ฿3,200 against ฿4,500 mid-range. Tao's small extras add up, with ฿50 to 100 at viewpoint and beach gates and ฿250 to 350 per ATM withdrawal on a foreign card.

Weather

Even

Even. February is the driest month on both, with about 64 mm of rain at the Koh Samui station, and November the wettest, with about 445 mm. From October to December Tao's boats can be rough or canceled and the dive visibility drops.
