Pick Koh Chang if…
- You have four nights or more
- You want jungle, waterfalls, a fishing-village pier and trips to Koh Mak and Koh Kood
- You're traveling November to May and want a bigger island to explore
Pick Koh Samet if…
- You have a weekend, or two nights at most
- You want the whitest sand within three hours of Bangkok
- Your dates are in the wet season, since Samet sits in a rain shadow and is swimmable most of the year
Why I'd choose that way
Both are the east-coast islands Bangkok escapes to, and both are reached by bus-plus-ferry from Ekkamai, but they're different sizes of trip. Koh Samet is small, about seven kilometers end to end, inside a national park (฿200 entry), with squeaky-white Hat Sai Kaew, fire-show beaches at Ao Hin Khok and Ao Phai, and quieter coves further south. It's packed on Thai weekends and quiet and cheap Monday to Thursday.
Koh Chang is Thailand's second-largest island, mostly protected jungle, with a string of west-coast beaches (White Sand, Klong Prao, Lonely Beach), Bang Bao's stilted pier, Klong Plu waterfall, and boats to Koh Wai, Koh Mak and Koh Kood. It takes longer to reach (five to six hours to Trat, or a flight) and it has a real low season, since from June to September the seas are rough and many businesses close.
Costs are close, with Samet slightly pricier per day (about ฿1,300 against ฿1,100 on a budget), a function of its size and its weekend demand.

Doing both Koh Chang and Koh Samet
Ban Phe (for Samet) and Trat (for Chang) are a few hours apart along the same coast, plus the ferries at each end, so combining them is a long day. Both piers are served from Ekkamai.

Which is closer to Bangkok?
Koh Samet is closer, about 3 to 4 hours to Ban Phe pier plus a 40-minute ferry. Koh Chang is 5 to 6 hours to Trat plus the car ferry, or a one-hour flight to Trat.
Which is better in the rainy season?
Koh Samet. It has the driest microclimate of any major Thai island. Koh Chang's June to September is rough seas and closures.
Is Koh Chang cheaper than Koh Samet?
Slightly, about ฿1,100 a day against ฿1,300 on a budget. Samet's national-park fee (฿200) and weekend demand push it up.
Which has better beaches?
Samet's sand is whiter and finer; Chang's beaches are longer, backed by jungle, and more varied. For a swim-and-sunbathe weekend, Samet; for a week of moving between beaches, Chang.
