Krabi for the greatest hits and the shortest logistics; Koh Lanta for a slower, cheaper, family-friendly island with calm water and easy driving. Lanta is two hours from Krabi's airport, so many people do both.

Pick Koh Lanta if…
- Families, long stays and calm shallow water
- A flat coastal road you can actually drive, and beaches that get wilder as you go south
- Diving at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, or day boats to Koh Rok and the Trang islands
Why I'd choose that way
Krabi province holds both, and Lanta is what you get when you drive two hours south and cross a car ferry, with 25 km of west-facing coast, Klong Dao and Long Beach in the north with the resorts, Klong Khong's beach bars, Kantiang Bay's jungle-backed sand, and the national-park lighthouse at the tip. Lanta Old Town's teak stilt houses are on the east coast. A month here costs what a week does on Phi Phi.
Krabi's mainland side is the dramatic one, with Railay's boat-only beaches under the cliffs, 700-plus climbing routes, the Four Islands, Tiger Cave Temple, and Ao Nang as a base with far more restaurants and tour desks. It's the better first stop and the better short stop.
Both run on the Andaman calendar. November to April is the season, and from May to October Lanta half closes. Costs are similar (about ฿1,200 a day on Lanta against ฿1,300 in Krabi on a budget), with Lanta cheaper for long stays.

Is Koh Lanta cheaper than Krabi?
A little on paper (about ฿1,200 a day against ฿1,300 on a budget) and a lot in practice for long stays, since monthly bungalow rates on Lanta are among the best value on the Andaman.
Is Koh Lanta good for families?
One of the best islands for it, with calm shallow water on the main beaches, a flat road, and a beanbag-bar rather than bucket-bar nightlife.
How long from Krabi airport to Koh Lanta?
Two to two and a half hours by minivan via the short car ferry to Lanta Noi and the Siri Lanta bridge, about ฿400 to 540.
Should I stay in Krabi or Koh Lanta?
Both, if you have a week. Spend three nights in Ao Nang or Railay for the day trips, then four on Lanta to slow down. With four nights or fewer, stay in Krabi.
