Trang Islands Guide

Five islands off Thailand's quietest stretch of Andaman coast, and how to choose between them.

By Mac Kiley · 8 min read · Updated Oct 28, 2026

The Trang islands are a scatter of small islands off Trang province in southern Thailand, south of Koh Lanta and north of Koh Lipe, and they're the quietest stretch of the Andaman coast that's still easy to reach. Most visitors choose between three of them. Koh Kradan has the best beach, Koh Mook has a fishing village and the Emerald Cave, and Koh Ngai is one long beach of resorts, the closest to Lanta.

They're 15 to 30 minutes apart by longtail, so you can stay on one and see the others. Further south, Koh Libong and Koh Sukorn are bigger, flatter and barely touristed, with village life rather than resort beaches. Fly or take the overnight train to Trang, then a van and boat, or ride the island-hopping speedboat from Lanta, which runs from mid-October to about 20 May. I'd come between December and April and give the islands four nights or more.

Key Facts

December to April

The dry season, with the calmest sea. The island-hopping speedboats from Lanta and Lipe run from mid-October to about 20 May, and several resorts close in the monsoon.

Islands 15 to 30 minutes apart

Kradan, Mook and Ngai are a short longtail ride from each other, and the speedboats hop between them for about ฿300–400 a leg.

Trang is the gateway

Trang's airport is about 1 hour 30 from Bangkok's Don Mueang, and the piers are about an hour's drive from town.

Bring cash

Kradan and Ngai have no ATM, and Mook has one you shouldn't rely on. Boats, massages and village food are cash.

National park fees

Kradan and the Emerald Cave are in Hat Chao Mai National Park, whose fee is ฿200 for adults and ฿100 for children. Tours include it.

Kradan's reef is closed

The park closed the reef off Kradan's main beach to snorkelers after the 2024 coral bleaching. Snorkel off Ngai, or at Koh Chueak and Koh Ma on a boat trip.

The Trang Islands, One by One

The three most people choose between first, then the two quiet ones in the south and the best day trip. Each has a short case here, and the first three have their own guides.

The Trang Islands, One by One — numbered by rank. 1 Koh Kradan · 2 Koh Mook · 3 Koh Ngai · 4 Koh Libong · 5 Koh Sukorn · 6 Koh Rok
  1. 1. Koh Kradan, Hat Chao Mai National Park

    The best beach

One long beach of soft white sand on the east coast, which the World Beach Guide voted the best on Earth in 2023, a handful of resorts behind it and nothing else, no village and no roads. It's the one I'd pick for a beach and a book. Stay at least a night, because day trips fill it from midday. My Koh Kradan guide has the five resorts, the walk to Sunset Beach and what's open for snorkeling.

    Getting there
The Lanta to Lipe speedboat at about 11:40, about 1 hour 10 from Saladan, or a boat from Khuan Tung Ku pier, 40 minutes to 1 hour 10.
    When to go
December to April. The island-hopping boats run mid-October to about 20 May.
  2. 2. Koh Mook, Trang coast, partly in Hat Chao Mai National Park

The Emerald Cave and a village

The Trang island with a life of its own, a mostly Muslim fishing village of about 1,000 people on the east coast, cheap places to eat and the most rooms of the three. Its fame is the Emerald Cave, an 80 m swim through the dark into a hidden lagoon, which you can kayak to before the tour boats arrive at about 09:00. Charlie Beach is the sunset. The Koh Mook guide has the cave, the beaches and where to stay.

    Getting there
The Lanta speedboat at about 11:20, or a 30-minute boat from the Trang coast, about every two hours from 08:30 to 16:30.
    When to go
Late November to April. The Emerald Cave usually closes roughly June to September.
  3. 3. Koh Ngai, Krabi province, reached from Trang or Lanta

Comfortable resorts and reef off the sand

Officially in Krabi province, but counted with the Trang islands because the boats run through them. It's a car-free resort island, one long beach down the east coast with nine resorts, reef a short swim out, hornbills in the trees and a jungle walk to Paradise Beach. It's the most comfortable and the most expensive of the three, and the easiest add-on to a Lanta trip. The Koh Ngai guide compares the resorts.

    Getting there
The Lanta speedboat's first stop, about 11:00, or King Travel's 09:00 ferry from Pak Meng pier, about an hour.
    When to go
November to April. Several resorts close May to October.
    Koh Ngai
    Koh Ngai

    4.6(319)

  4. 4. Koh Libong, South of Koh Mook, off Hat Yao

Village life, away from the boats

The biggest of the Trang islands, about 34 square km of mangroves, low hills and Muslim fishing villages, with a few simple resorts and homestays and very few foreign visitors. Come for the village pace and the mangroves, not for a white-sand beach. It's also Thailand's main dugong habitat, and that population has crashed in the last few years, so I'd treat the dugongs as a reason to tread lightly rather than a reason to visit (more below).

    Getting there
A longtail of about 15 to 30 minutes from Hat Yao pier, south of Trang town. The island-hopping speedboats don't stop.
    When to go
December to April, with the same monsoon as the other islands.
  5. 5. Koh Sukorn, The far south of the Trang coast

    Farms and almost no tourists

A flat, farmed island of about 12 square km, watermelon fields and rubber smallholdings, with mostly Muslim fishing villages and a few small resorts on its west-facing beaches. There are no limestone cliffs and little snorkeling. It's the one for walking past farms and watching the sunset with nobody else on the beach, and it's the hardest to reach.

    Getting there
A longtail of about 20 minutes from Tha Se pier on the mainland. Ask your resort to arrange the transfer from Trang.
    When to go
    December to April.
  6. 6. Koh Rok, About 15 km west of Koh Ngai

The clearest water, as a day trip

A pair of national park islands with no resorts and the clearest water within reach of the Trang islands. Beyond the park's campsite there's nowhere to stay, so most people come on a day trip, by speedboat tour from Lanta or by longtail from Ngai, about ฿4,000 for the boat for the day.

    When to go
November to April, when the park is open and the sea is calm.

Island Hopping Between Kradan, Mook and Ngai

The three islands sit in a short line, Ngai to the north, Mook in the middle and Kradan to the south, and that makes hopping easy. From mid-October to about 20 May the Lanta to Lipe speedboats call at all three each morning, and a hop between them costs about ฿300–400 a leg, around ฿350 from Mook to Ngai and ฿400 from Kradan. Book a day ahead at your resort or a village agency on Mook, or on 12Go.

Longtails fill the gaps. Kradan is about 15 minutes from Mook and Ngai about half an hour, and a longtail shared for the day from Mook costs about ฿800, enough to see the Emerald Cave and Kradan in your own order. On Ngai, longtail snorkeling trips start at about ฿600. If the cave is on your route, ask the boatman to go first or last to miss the tour boats.

Libong and Sukorn are off this circuit. Most people reach them from the mainland, Libong from Hat Yao and Sukorn from Tha Se, so I'd put them at the start or end of a trip rather than in the middle.

The 4 Islands Trip From Koh Lanta or Trang

The 4 Islands trip is how most people see the Trang islands, and it runs from both sides. From Koh Lanta, the boats snorkel at Koh Chueak or Koh Ma, swim through the Emerald Cave on Koh Mook, stop for lunch on Koh Ngai and, on one option, finish with about 40 minutes on Koh Kradan. From Trang, the same circuit leaves Pak Meng pier in the morning, and many tours collect you from Trang town for a fee.

It's a long day with a short time on each island, and you'll swim the cave in its busiest hours. I'd treat it as a scouting trip, then come back and stay on the island you liked. The national park fee, ฿200 for adults, is usually included, so check before you pay it twice.

The Lanta to Lipe Speedboat Through the Islands

From mid-October to 20 May, Bundhaya's island-hopping speedboat leaves Saladan pier on Koh Lanta at 10:30 and works south, calling at Koh Ngai at about 11:00, Koh Mook at 11:20 and Koh Kradan at 11:40 before reaching Koh Lipe at 13:30. A second boat leaves at 12:30 from 1 November to 4 May. From Lanta it's ฿650 to Ngai, ฿900 to Mook and ฿950 to Kradan, and ฿1,700 all the way to Lipe. Tigerline and Satun Pakbara run the same route at similar times.

That makes the Trang islands an easy stopover between Lanta and Lipe. Buy Lanta to one island, stay a night or two, then pick up the next day's boat south for about ฿1,400–1,600. Northbound, the boat leaves Lipe at 09:00 and calls at the islands on the way to Lanta. The big boats can't land on Kradan, and a longtail carries you to the sand for about ฿50 if it isn't in your ticket.

Van-and-boat fares from 12Go's listings, which include a booking fee. Speedboat fares are Bundhaya's own. Libong and Sukorn aren't on the speedboat route, so you reach them from the Trang coast.

Trang Airport, the Train and the Piers

Trang is the gateway town, with an airport about 1 hour 30 from Bangkok's Don Mueang and the overnight Express No. 83, which leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:50 and reaches Trang a little after 08:00. Van-and-boat tickets on 12Go collect you from the town, the station or the airport and take you through to the island, which is the simplest way to do it.

Which pier you use depends on the island. Pak Meng, about an hour's drive from Trang town or the airport, is the pier for Koh Ngai and where most tours from Trang leave. Khuan Tung Ku, also about an hour from town, has most of the boats to Koh Kradan and Koh Mook. Hat Yao, further south, is the pier for Koh Libong, and Tha Se is the pier for Koh Sukorn. Hat Yao and Tha Se have little transport of their own, so book the transfer with your resort.

Coming from Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe in season, skip Trang and take the island-hopping speedboat. Leaving the islands can take longer than arriving, because the boats call at the other islands first, so don't book a tight flight on the same day.

How Many Nights, and How to Split Them

Give the Trang islands four nights at least. Two on Koh Mook and two on Koh Kradan is the split I'd make, the village and the cave first, then the beach, with the boats between them taking 15 minutes. With five or six nights, I'd put Koh Ngai first for its reef and resorts, then Mook, and take a longtail to Kradan for the day.

Libong and Sukorn suit a second trip or a slower one. Add two nights on Libong if you want to see a Trang island that lives on fishing rather than tourism, and come from the mainland rather than through the other islands.

When to Go

December to April is the dry season, with the calmest sea and the clearest water, and January and February are the busiest months, when the best rooms on Kradan and Ngai sell out early. November is the shoulder, when the rains are clearing and the boats have started. The island-hopping speedboats from Lanta and Lipe run from mid-October to about 20 May.

May to October is the southwest monsoon, wettest from August to October, with about 285 mm a month at the Trang weather station and about 2,250 mm a year. The speedboats stop, the sea gets rough, several resorts close, and the Emerald Cave usually shuts from about June to September. Every February, around Valentine's Day, Trang holds its underwater wedding on the seabed near the Emerald Cave, so book early for that week.

Koh Libong's Dugongs, and Visiting Responsibly

Koh Libong's seagrass meadows are Thailand's main dugong habitat, and the population is in trouble. About 194 dugongs lived around Libong in 2023. Between 2020 and 2024 the island's protected seagrass shrank by up to half, many dugongs starved, and in early 2025 experts estimated that as few as 10 might remain at Libong, with an aerial survey counting 33 in early 2026. Villagers from Libong's eight villages run the Dugong Guardians network to protect them.

So I wouldn't plan a trip around seeing one. If you stay on Libong, choose a local boatman who keeps to the zoned areas, goes slowly and cuts the engine near seagrass, and never chase an animal. Across the islands, snorkel only where the park allows it, don't stand on coral, wear a reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest, and take your plastic back to the mainland, because everything on these islands arrives and leaves by boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Trang Islands Guide.

A group of small islands off Trang province on Thailand's Andaman coast, south of Koh Lanta and north of Koh Lipe. The best known are Koh Kradan, Koh Mook and Koh Ngai, with Koh Libong and Koh Sukorn further south. Koh Ngai is officially in Krabi province but is reached through Trang.

Koh Kradan for the beach, Koh Mook for the Emerald Cave, a village and cheaper rooms, and Koh Ngai for comfortable resorts and reef off the sand. They're 15 to 30 minutes apart by longtail, so you can stay on one and visit the others.

Fly from Bangkok's Don Mueang to Trang, about 1 hour 30, or take the overnight train, then a van and boat from Pak Meng or Khuan Tung Ku pier. From mid-October to about 20 May, the speedboats between Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe also stop at Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and Koh Kradan.

Yes. The island-hopping speedboats call at Ngai, Mook and Kradan each morning in season, for about ฿300–400 a leg, and longtails cover the short hops, about 15 minutes from Mook to Kradan. A longtail for the day from Mook costs about ฿800.

Four nights at least, two on Koh Mook and two on Koh Kradan. With five or six, add Koh Ngai. You can see the main three on a 4 Islands day trip from Koh Lanta or Trang, but you'll spend less than an hour on each.

December to April, when the sea is calm and clear. The island-hopping speedboats run from mid-October to about 20 May. From May to October the monsoon brings rough seas, the boats stop and several resorts close.

Sometimes, but don't count on it. Libong's dugong population has collapsed since 2023 as its seagrass died back, and recent surveys counted a few dozen at most. If you go, use a local boatman who keeps to the zoned areas and keeps his distance.

No. Koh Lanta is in Krabi province, just north of the Trang islands, and it's the easiest base for them. The speedboats from Lanta's Saladan pier reach Koh Ngai in about 30 minutes.
