Sairee Beach

4.4(864 reviews)

Stretching along the western coast of Koh Tao, Sairee Beach is the island's longest and most developed shoreline, drawing travellers who want easy access to both the water and a buzzing beachfront scene. The beach is well known as a hub for scuba diving and snorkelling, with numerous dive schools and operators based directly along the strip, making it a natural starting point for those looking to explore the Gulf of Thailand's coral reefs. The calm, clear waters are generally suitable for swimming, and the sandy stretch is wide enough to find a quieter spot even when busy. Beyond the water, Sairee Beach is lined with guesthouses, bars, restaurants, and dive shops that cater to a predominantly young, international crowd. The atmosphere shifts from relaxed and laid-back during the day to noticeably livelier in the evenings, with beachfront venues offering food, drinks, and occasional fire shows. It is one of the more social corners of Koh Tao, suiting travellers who want convenience and company rather than seclusion. Practically speaking, the best time to visit Koh Tao is between March and September, when seas are calmer and visibility for diving is at its clearest. Visitors should note that Sairee Beach can become quite crowded during peak season and around the Full Moon Party period on nearby Koh Pha-Ngan, so booking accommodation well in advance is advisable. Sunbeds are available for rent along much of the beach.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Check Monsoon Windows

Andaman coast beaches (Phuket, Krabi) have rough seas May–October. Gulf beaches (Samui, Hua Hin) are roughest October–December. Plan your beach trip around these windows for calm water and safe swimming.

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. Sunrise walks on Kata, Chaweng, or Railay are magical — and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
